The first thing I would do is ask a clear question..

What is most important for what? Choosing a coin? Max profit?

We need more info.

As NorrisK already wrote. Be more specific. I guess you mean what it needs to be successful of choosing good altcoins. My answer is: research. Do your own research about a coin, it's community, it's devs, plans, innovation etc. That is the secret.

Don't just dive in and start buying altcoins. Spend a month studying the whole scene first. Pretend you invested some money in an altcoin you like the look of, wait a month, and see if your investment would have been worth it. Immerse yourself in the altcoin scene before spending any money and you will stand a better chance of making good investments.

Start with no more than 2 or three but don't put any money yet.

Go on to a high volume exchange and watch those coins trade for a few months.  Learn the regular trading patterns, the volume, the usual amounts that are bought and sold, common prices, etc.  By the end of a few months you should have a clear understanding of what is the normal price and volume for the given coin is.

You should be able to predict with some certainly the future fluctuations of the coin's price.  You'll be able to tell what is normal and abnormal volume and price swings.  There is a common pattern in trades, what the usual spread is, and what intervals people usually place the buy and sell orders at.  It is at this moment when you can begin to put in your hard earned money.

On the contrary, if by after a few months you do not see any patterns , then you have to select a different coin and start over.

Longterm: SDC, BUCKS, START, BLACKCOIN, BITBAY (less risky)

shorterm: any shitcoin would do. (more risk)

How is risk calculated?

If I can sell my coins for same price or just little less value within a week it's considered less risky. 10-30% than my buying price would be considered less risky.

what is most important you think ?
what do you want to get out of the altcoin market?
do you want new, fancy altcoin with innovations and don't care about the profit?
or do you want to earn some profit out of altcoin trading and don't care about other stuff?

Here is my opinion and it's just an opinion not a fact.

Focus on coins that have been in market for a while and has good community/dev etc...there are only handful of coins.

If you try to ride the wave there are 90% chance that you'll end up losing all your investment.

I learned my lesson hard way and lost lot of money in shitcoins that went from 5k to 4 sat within a day. Now, I just stick to alts that have stable community and gaining slowly but contantly...less money and most good coins only gain 5-10% per month but that would be considered extremely good in any kind of investment. Don't be too greedy and think that you'll be able to ride the wave and will get out just in time because it ain't gonna happen all the time.

The biggest unknown is which names and brands consumers will be drawn towards. I think the best qualities when looking for an altcoin investment are name, developer, and community.

Find an altcoin with a great name, talented and dedicated developer, and a community that doesn't look like a revolving door, and you've found your winner.
