Title: Sanders: 'We Have Got to Apologize for Slavery'
Post by: rio3232 on July 11, 2015, 07:04:00 AM
Presidential hopeful Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) has made the proclamation that “as a nation, we have got to apologize for slavery.”

During an interview with Joe Madison on Sirius XM’s “The Black Eagle,” Madison asked Sanders, “If elected President of the United States, would you apologize for slavery?”

Sanders replied, “You know, obviously, nobody in this generation is involved in slavery. But as a nation, slavery is one of the abominations that our country has experienced. There is no excuse. What can we say about it? It was horrific, it killed millions of people who never made it even across the ocean, and it destroyed just the lives of so many people.”

“So as a nation – and I don’t think as a president, but as a nation – we have got to apologize for slavery, of course,” he continued.

Madison then pressured Sanders to respond directly to whether he would apologize for slavery as president by asking, “So is that a yes or a no?”

Sanders said, “Well, it’s a… I mean… I’m not exactly sure what it means. As a nation, we have got to apologize for slavery, and of course, the president is the leader of the nation.”

Sanders’ statements on slavery come after a Fox News poll revealed the candidate is not popular among black Democrats. Only 5 percent of black Democrats stated they would like to see Sanders as the Democratic presidential nominee, compared to 68 percent for Hillary Clinton.

So now that everyone is riding the slavery bandwagon, who apologizes and who receives it? As wrong as slavery was, how many people would not be here today if it hadn't existed? If we apologize for slavery then those in this generation who benefited from it should publicly thank those who suffered in order for them to have the relatively cushy lives they curretly have. And if we apologize for having slaves, then shouldn't the people who sold them to us also apologize?

Benghazi? Old news.

IRS scandal? Old news.

Slavery? It's still alive and well and living in America, or at least one would think so.

How do you know that Blacks only belongs to Africa, do you know the history of America, if not then Google it to read it, those true facts will tear apart your ribs and bones. I would appreciate if you refrain from "F's and B's" while you are pointing out to any communities.

the blacks who demand apologies for being "stolen" from their native africa say it only they are too stupid to follow their own reasoning all the way to the end. every effort must be made to return stolen property to its rightful place.

what part of " if they dont like living in america" was too complicated for you? i did not say that every primitive must return to africa but that those who are unhappy about their conditions in america ought to. they may have been forced to be in there in the 1850s but there is nothing stopping them from going someplace they'd feel more comfortable now. but of course there are no food stamps in africa nor the productive white workers to pay for them.

Yeah too many human right activist logic here, they just think about human right, don't notice the other aspects and causes of that.

Who knows if Bernie Sanders said this, but if he did, he is either ignorant or else he is a complete hypocrite. Why? Because income taxes are said to be voluntary. But just try volunteering out.

Income taxes are slavery. All taxes are slavery. If they were voluntary, they would be donations. If Bernie Sanders said the above, and if it hasn't been taken out of context somehow, Bernie is either stupid and shouldn't hold office, or else he is one of the plantation owners and doesn't deserve to hold office.

The only acceptable apology for slavery is ending capitalism and all the violence-supported racist neo-feudal hierarchies which consist it. Won't be long now.

A socialist might be equipped to handle such a monumental transition, but if Sanders loses the election next year and Clinton. Once a political dynasty is back on the throne, unrest (youth-powered, an infinite resource) will build until it explodes like a powder keg.

America is going to become extremely violent, and probably fully ungovernable while capitalism slowly slides it back to third world colonial status over the course of the next decade or two.

This issue is quite complex. People belonging to almost all the races fell victims of the slave trade, at one point of time or the another. Tens of millions of native Americans were enslaved by the Conquistadors, in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Also, the Arabs enslaved some 200 million people, including 150 million from Africa, and 50 million from Europe. The Ottomans and the Crimean Tatars enslaved tens of millions of Slavs, and sold them to the Arabs. Slavery was widespread in countries such as India and Indonesia. So IMO, these politicians should stop associating slavery with the White perpetrator / black victim propaganda.

"If you don't like it you can get out" That is the worst, literally the worst rebuttle or opinion anyone can possibly have. It basically says that you have no idea what your talking about.

You're probably right. Take Lagos, Nigeria, Africa, for example. Their laws don't allow for formal slavery. But the largest part of their population is so dirt-poor, that the American slaves of the past could be considered wealthy royalty in comparison to the free, poor, millions in Lagos. Long live capitalism!

If you don't like blacks living in America, there's nothing stopping you from going someplace where you'd feel more comfortable.  I'd even help crowdfund your ticket.  I'm sure plenty of whites would support the endeavor.

Sanders should do more than apologize for slavery, he should run against modern slavery/economic totalitarianism. But that would be against his ideals.

The US did apologize for slavery, and in a much more official and appropriate way than rhetoric during an election cycle. The US Congress issued a formal statement (Resolution H.Res.194) apologizing for slavery.

Here's the text of the Resolution if anyone wants to read it: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/110/hres194/text

While I don't think Sanders is wrong, it seems a bit opportunistic given that he's ignoring the House of Representatives Resolution from 2008 and he's making his comments while openly seeking election.

By the way, the apology will never heal the wounds of slavery. Only time will do that, provided that equality is gained. The same would apply to the German government apologizing to Jews for the atrocities of the Nazi regime. What Germany has done really, really well is memorialize all the bad that happened during that era so that the future generations will never be able to forget (and therefore repeat) what happened. The monuments in Berlin to the fallen from those oppressed by the Nazi's is really appropriate.

Apologizing for something doesn't mean anything when you keep on doing it. The 14th Amendment simply freed slaves from their private slave holders, and made them slaves of the government. Worse than that, it allowed for government to make slaves of free men and women that would not have been in slavery otherwise. And the government hasn't been idle bringing as many people into this slavery as they can.

Repeal the 14th Amendment and set the slaves free.

:)

Does Bernie Sanders exlude blacks from "american nation" or are blacks also supposed to apologize to themselves for slavery? Textbook populism of fighting past battles.

Oh, I just noticed Bernie is from jewish family. Makes sense.
