Title: Biggest personal bitcoin loss
Post by: PenguinFire on July 11, 2015, 06:07:04 PM
I am not sure if I am putting this in the right section.

Anyway, what are some of your guys biggest bitcoin losses?  Did many people here loss everything with Mtcox?  For me it is online casinos.  I do have a moderate gambling habit so it was bound to happen.  :'(

I lost quite a bit on securities, every company I invested turned to be scam, bankrupt, incompetents or something I don't even know.

You can check this topic, it has some real horror stories: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=576337.0

I lost 0.2 BTC back then investing in "MazaCoin". It was supposed to go to the moon, but it went underground. I held all the way down scare to try to reduce losses right when it would start going up.. I managed to even buy at the top.. what a waste of money that was.

I would think if your dealing with an alternative currency other than what the majority of people are using, because the masses use what is stable, then you are going to see a loss eventually.
Everytime the price goes up and goes down. When it goes down wouldn't you consider this a loss?

My biggest loss is 1.5 BTC on roulette , it's few months ago , and the latest one I lost 0.2 on Primedice. I don't invest in cloud mining or ponzi, so I was saved from other losses.

My biggest loss was not getting into Bitcoin in December 2012 when I first became aware of it.

I've also always wanted to get into a ponzi scheme early, you know before the late adopters get scammed, but could never bring myself to do it.

I guess my loss was time more than monetary, but that time indirectly impacts the monetary side.

My biggest loss was when I was still gambling. I think I've lost 2-3BTC from roulette, sports bet and other gambling stuff. So from then on, I told myself to stay away from gambling.

Two biggest losses come from altcoins and dice gambling. Both inherited great risk, and lost out on 3 BTC total. Not my best moment but I've made it all back through video slots and such. As far as altcoins go, I refuse to give the shit another chance. Practically all altcoins are built to fail, but gain quick bucks through investors along the way.

I am not a type of person who left their money on casino , I will withdraw all my money when I want to stop playing, and deposit again if I want to play. I lost them all in few hours.
I am not a high roller, I bet on black or red only and used martingale , I forgot how many losses in a row till lost them all. I got a lesson, you can't win with martingale unless with huge bankroll.

I have always known what I wanted in the crypto biz, and that has always been bitcoin. So whenever I invested in any altcoins and made profit, I immediately got them into btc :P It did help me in the long way, honestly. But I had really bad gambling issues and I lost 2-3 btc in gambling. Ofcourse, I have made up a lot of money in gambling too, more than 10btc so it all equals out.

i lost couple thousand dollars when I forced to buy coins from mtgox at $1100 a piece cause it was the only way to my cash out of there.  I had previously sold at $800 but they weren't processing any wires.  thankfully I got out at all before they went belly up.

Wow. Mostly people have only lost because of lots of gambling.  I have never invested in bitcoin since I am only a teenager and still learning about  bitcoin but I think you can still re gain that amount by more investing and you had fun, which was the point dude!

From the majority of posts here, the only big personal losses here are either because of gambling or because of scams. I know a fellow member who's mining hardware caused a fire in the home. I think that could be one of the most weirdest personal losses because of bitcoin lol xD

My biggest loss would have to be the ~994 BTC I gave to BF Labs that I subsequently only ever recovered back half in $ terms, forget about BTC.  That one still smarts.  :)  treat them like gold people.

over 40BTC on gox and another ~30-50BTC because of amazing preorders in the past, like blackarrow, hashfast, bfl or avalon. after all this mess, I had only paper wallets (and some small portion on electrum) now and I swear to avoid any preorder until end of my life.

guys coming to bitcoin these day don't have idea, how many guys here lost shit of lot BTC, just because it was full of bloody scam. imho now, situation is little bit better, at least there are no HW preorders anymore and community is much smarter and don't believe everything with BTC logo on website..meeh

Gambling is purely based on luck, you have already given the answer that those loss in gambling bound to happen, but you didn't mention how much value you lost, based on that it can be ascertain that your loss is small or big, however couple of weeks before my friend has lost his 0.5 bitcoin while trading with untrusted partner.

I do not gamble , so I was safe from such losses however I'am investing on few projects on Securities , one of them turned up to be a scam (not the manager of the project) but the seller who was supposed to sell us his service . however we are trying to get up on our feets and that's just 60$ ;D so nothing big .

I lost 0.2 on Auroracoin. Do you remember the hipe? I didn't bought on the top but expected it to go up once more. So I still have 210 of them.
Also lost 1500$ on Mtgox. I was stupid and sent them to the site in the last days to buy 12 cheap bitcoins. And then one day the page turned into beautiful white color...

My biggest bitcoin loss was 30 btc when I bought an altcoin for 1 btc then it went up to 42 btc but I sold at 12, so although I had won 11 I had technically lost 30, that was my most stupidest mistake, hence I don't trade now, I only collect coins instead lol.  >:(

Our coin qibuck also lost 15 btc to a scammy Dev, that hurt us a lot as a group..took me ages to recover emotionally and monetarily still trying to cope..

I lost 0.4 btc (2 x 0.2) in a site which promised to double those. They told that they invested the money in trading and i wanted to try (even i didn't believed them). But the tentation was big and I send the money. The site was gone after two days and with the site were gone even my bitcoin. All I can tell is: fortunately wasn't more.

I've had minor losses, but nothing compared to this guy who I remember hearing about last year:

http://www.coindesk.com/watch-man-confront-ceo-mt-gox-missing-bitcoins/

I think he said he had around $300k worth of btc on Mt Gox.  Not sure if his story was ever followed up on, but I'm doubting he got anything back.

Hmm the biggest loss I can remember is only a third of a whole bitcoin, not much compared to those who were left nothing by the Mt. Gox fiasco. Also the biggest losses I could think of would obviously come from gamblers who are addicted to that thing.

Bitcoin losses are part of the game. Of course the idea is to reduce it as much as you can while trading.

One approach could be moving into the alt coin world. They're plenty of those and they easily convert to bitcoin using exchanges.

Alt coin strategies need to be diversified and carefully monitored. They change very rapidly and if you hold a short term position you need to be ready to sell as soon as you feel there is a downward slide (not to be confused with a downward movement).

The best would be to check the daily min-max values and the volume of trading. That gives you a hint on how the sentiment is for the coin.

Of course there's more to it, feel free to PM me if yuo like more information!

The only time I've had any bitcoin losses were because of my own stupidity, most of them which I earned back very quickly, so it didn't affect me much when my btc recovered. My biggest personal loss was 5 btc, I invested in the wrong altcoins. Thankfully, market was going good at that time and I knew exactly how things would be so I traded smart and made 5 btc in 2 weeks by trading only. Shush, secret.

My biggest lost was 0.2 btc which I lost on a ponzi site. Back then, I have no idea that site(cryptodouble.com) is a ponzi. I was paid once when I tried the site but when I reinvested much bigger amount, they didn't paid me anymore until they closed their site

what did you spend them on? Anything significantly costlier/bigger? I have often overspent my btc, on the most unrequired things in the life of a common man. But then again, bitcoin isn't as widely acceptable anyway. The only reason I spend bitcoins are the things I don't want anybody to know it belongs to mine, so my identity too remains anonymous with btc.

oops. Yes, gambling is pretty attractive if you don't treat it with a little strictness. Do not feel too disheartened, always feel that one day you will get that money back the next time you gamble, and gamble the money you can afford to lose. Gambling isn't as bad as it seems, its just not that good either. As much as anything involve money ;)

Everytime we discuss losing bitcoins and scamming is in the conversation, I always hear cloudmining way too often. The cloud mining industry fucked things up for bitcoin so bad, even affecting the minds and believe of bitcoin users when they invest their btc into a cloud mining product and end up getting scammed so badly, most of them losing half of their total savings. That's why I keep my personal money different.

0.12 btc is not such a huge price anyway. Once, a person transferred 2 btc and I thought those were my payments for my services regarding some company I was working for, but long story short, they weren't. I invested all of it on further investments and didn't stop counting money ever since, now the interests seem to drift from money, its all about being yourself and what you do.

I sold a bunch of gold at the top in late 2013 (when btc was over 1k), and it got stuck in escrow while the price crashed.  That equaled probably a $2,000 loss

I lost somewhere around BTC30 with LTC-GLOBAL (BTCT.co) in 2013, which constituted some 60% of all my BTC holdings at that point of time. I am still cursing my decision to invest my coins in LTCGLOBAL.... Perhaps I got too greedy back then. Anyway... the lesson learnt the hard way. I am not going to invest again in any other investment scheme.

Probably only $15 spread out across a bunch of scamcoins, of which I 'invested' into and subsequently pulled out of too soon - or held too long & left with nothing >:(

my biggest loss comes for the accumulation of 2 years of gambling off and on primedice.

2.8 btc loss which could of been sitting in my wallet the entire time.

all the loss was from doing 90% bets thinking you can scalp .1 btc a week or something viable.

I agree, and to add, I think it's even harder to get rid of when you are gambling with Bitcoin. I mean it's so easy to gamble by using bitcoins nowadays. No registration, limits, nothing. There are some gambling sites where you don't even have to open an account (I am not gonna mention the names) you just send an amount to the certain address and if you win, your winnings are automatically transfered to the address of your choice.

I was amazed when I learnt all of that and this ease of use won't help gambling addictions at all!

The I better don't tell here how much I paid to a couple of programmers who accepted Bitcoin... and I shouldn't mention all the wallets from the past of which I forgot the password. And I shouldn't talk about the harddrives which crashed and which I couldn't reconstruct....

I mean we can shrug it off still since the value is moderately low.

But if bitcoin was like 1,000 per coin, then Id say wow. But still a loss and its painful. I can only imagine if the value stayed at 1,000 that 6 btc would be a 6,000 loss..

the most I lost was like 2.4 btc on 1 roll on primedice and that felt gutted out losing it like less then 1 second.

thats really sucks.

And its a shame you werent able to use it for anything, and something that most people overlook is the passphrase to their wallets as well or knowing to back up the btc wallet file.

I personally lost some bitcoin based on some bad deals by buying hardware from BFL when everything was overhyped.

I sold a bunch of gold at the top in late 2013 (when btc was over 1k), and it got stuck in escrow while the price crashed.  That equaled probably a $2,000 loss

by any chance did you use the btc to buy the gold 1st? or was it gold that you already had?

that 2k loss is huge.. thats a ton of money like 2 months of rent money.. i feell for you.

neobee - 10 BTC (owner runaway)
bitfinex - 10 BTC (burnt on margin trading recently)

thats a ton of bitcoin.. 20 btc in total..

more then I have, the most loss was when I bought into pre-orders with the other cointerra miners.

i think you got the metrics wrong.. if its 0.001200? that isnt much.  and it doesnt form a $2 mark value.

Unless you mean 1.200 btc then yeah its reasonable loss.

I did not use btc to buy it originally.  I was trying to move from gold -> btc by just selling on cryptothrift.  I (like a lot of people) got caught up in the dramatic rise occurring.  Someone ended up buying everything I had for sale when the price was up over 1k.  By the time it was delivered AND escrow was released price had already dropped significantly.  Thats when I decided to keep holding (and thus furthered my losses to around 2k).

If youre talking about faucet money then its free money to lose already, so technically you had no loss in the end lol.

But, these stories above me like mine are personal funds. Although you point out not being scammed, theres multiple scenarios that someone can lose bitcoins even if its not scams. Like not having a strong passphrase, to importing a old address, etc.

Its the feeling of the loss and despite the amount may not be as big, it could of been a .1 btc or something that could of been grown further.

That is surprising. Every now and then, Primedice used to give away free coins, so that their users could play games without risking their own money. That used to be the case when I was participating in the Primedice sig campaign. Not sure whether they have stopped this promotion or not. I haven't logged in to my Primedice account for more than 6 months now.

So many bitcoin companies close down due to bankruptcy that the number of people who invested and lost is probably the same as those who gained on it. I'd say that since 2014 your chances of making money with Bitcoin are less than 50%

Elsewhere mostly refers to a bad investment I made in a couple "bitcoin businesses" in 2013, when the "securities" scene was hot. The founder of one turned out to be a ex-con scammer, basically. The rest was to BTCQuick, owners Jerrod Bunce and Michael McNierney on Bitfunder (run by scammer Jon Montroll), the scammers still owe investors over $50k and 1,000 BTC. Luckily, I had mostly cashed out by then.

Lesson is: Only invest in LEGITIMATE companies (yes, with lawyers and financial statements), and buy a Trezor.

As for gambling, I have gambled millions$ of turnover on sports but am roughly up 1%+ ROI. I put in real effort though to earn that, would advise most shouldn't gamble.

It was a bad day.

The losses might not look bad, but their impact would be the same to the person going through the losses because he will only reap losses at the price he bought. So in a situation where I had a loss of 2 btc, I suffered a loss of 2400$ because I bought it at 1200$/1BTC. Meanwhile, a guy who bought 2 btc today only went through a loss of 400$, so yeah. Losses are losses, I don't cry over spilled milk.

If dip is what freaks out someone then I think he should first learn about bitcoin A to Z. this is a very basic fact about not only just bitcoin but the whole digital market that it bears a volatile nature which means there will be fluctuation including positive and negative ones, from time to time. This is the essence of bitcoin that its price changes the most allowing to gain tremendous profits.

i've lost money with bitcoin.  Part of dealing with any sort of new technology is to manage risk, so none of my losses were crippling or particularly unexpected. So among the ways that I've lost money:
.. MtGox owes me about USD 200.
..i've probably lost on the order of a few hundreds dollars over the last month trading bitcoin.

Maybe some people must have experienced the same mistakes, lost some btc. I think it's not bad because with mistakes we can learn from it. Is losing 0.75BTC a big loss when bet on europe cup yesterday?

I never experience to lose a huge amount of profit but only just a few, let say we cannot handle the pressure in the market because of the volatility so it was normal sometimes to sell your coins at its lowest price because of your doubt if it will increase again or not.

Yeah and since we cannot predict the market of crypto currency that's why sometines we dump our coin because we think It Is the maximum level of Its market or we mean to target that value In order to dump. So far, I don't have yet experience those biggest loose In bitcoin, but I hope It won't be happen on to me In the near future.

My biggest bitcoin loss was around 0.6 BTC only. Let me share my experience. I was so broke by the time I received my coin and I'm unable to transfer it to Yobit because I don't have enough. I waited for my next pay day. Finally, I bought some ETH and transferred my coin to yobit. It only took 3 days for the value to go down by almost 75%. I should have gotten more if I have ETH the moment I receive my coin. I already learned my lesson and this will not happen again. BTW, holding that coin will be a bad decision because of the poor product.

I still remember my biggest losses and it was something that was extreme. I have lost my entire capital in my initial days of trading just because I wanted to earn a maximum profit and I blindly followed the tips given by "someone from the exchange chatbox". It was the worst trade technique and it deserved 100% loss but that period taught me a very good lesson and today, I never invest in anything without doing research and understanding it.

My biggest Bitcoin loss was 0.12 BTC some month ago by sending them to a wrong address  ;D

That's terrible, in my own experience I have been in the state that I panic sell the 20k of my tokens and eventually few days after the price in the market increase up to ten times, and I really regret that part that patience is really a virtue that when you wait you can actually have the best thing to recieve, my parents keep saying that it's fine the money that I've got is enough for an ordinary person like me to achieve they keep my spirit alive even though it was really a regretful scenario for me since I know I deserve a better amount since i have work for that.

not a big deal anyway

one BTC is not a big deal for you? Just amazing!!!

This how things start in the beginning, since ICO project starts with this price also, it is only that the person who receives this BTC did use this for fun to sell when the price increase a little bit, now all of them regretted to sell it on the early basis, everyone does a regrettable moment on Bitcoin.

Keep being positive, an attitude that we should have while working inside this business, if we will deal with our loss properly then we will be able to cope up and begin to plan for much better strategy, I once lost the opportunity of gaining a lot when I sold my 1btc for only 1k$ the beginning of last year if I just hold it and wait till today then I might have decent earnings.

For the time being there may be a lot of people who suffered huge losses because they held their assets. you know I've been holding my asset since January and that means if I do cashout now at least I lose 60% of my money. since many coins have fallen in price by more than 50% since last January. You're right I prefer to hold and keep buying

Hmm the biggest loss I can remember is only a third of a whole bitcoin, not much compared to those who were left nothing by the Mt. Gox fiasco. Also the biggest losses I could think of would obviously come from gamblers who are addicted to that thing.

Oh, well, I never lost my btc, except the fact that I bought it when the price was higher than now. Besides, I hope that it will increase again and since I didn't sold my btc nothing’s lost.

And this is the wisest position, bro. Until you sell Bitcoins, you do not lose anything at all. We all know that the cryptocurrencies prices will go to the Moon again, and we will see this great event this year already.

I've been in this business since a few years ago. I can not calculate my total loss because it comes from many things like gambling, trade, ponzi investment, and so forth. I also often lose money because it is wrong in choosing the time to sell or get a loss because the investment site to be a scam and the worst when I lost a lot of money about some btc in gambling

There was that one time when I felt really down by what was happening in the market when the prices increased but I simply did not have any crypto currencies to sell because I lost most of my coins before when trading and trying to get a good catch, but now I feel lucky just because I am a participant of this kind of business from the very begining and that I still got some BTC when it's value was not that high.
I am not faced with any loss and this is due to the rules and principles I am following and this obedience of the market rules always lead me towards success and huge profit. It is not necessary and not considering it to loss must in the beginning but is all up to the mind and knowledge of the source you are investing in. leave all those mistakes if you ever performed and start again in the light of market basic rules and for long term so you will never face any loss again.

It is true that bitcoin investment and bitcoin joining campaign is much better than gambling because in gambling you will have to face risk and your entire profit will be about luck if you are lucky you can earn good but most of new users inter gambling which is not child play, so at first best option is joining campaigns as with it you will earn and learn at the same time so after being old at crypto you can try gambling as well so risk will almost equal to zero.

Many people in crypto are always make a bet for gambling or casinos but they not know that it will bring a big losses to them. I personally suffered such loss last year when I decided to sell my bitcoins and that too at time of dump which then make me learn a lesson that do not get panic in any kind of situation.

Mistakes are one of the best teacher beside experience because mistakes will teach you tough lesson and if you are not like other people or the majority of the people who take mistakes as mistake literally but if you are a person which have a mature mind then you will take mistake as lesson and basis for the future actions or decision making.

Actually this is all about your homework before getting in this world of trading or investing. Everyone must prepare himself for the profits and losses as well. Nobody should only consider profits. There are people who are scared of losses so that just become disappointed or disturbed once they get loss. I think this must be done prior coming to the new world and keep your mind strong.

My biggest personal loss in bitcoin is when i don't trade with a plan and i just get into the market look at the coin and put all of my capital to that coin without even searching about what is the possible setup that i can make in order to be profitable to that trade but i didn't do that and i loss a lot of money nearly 80% of my total capital.

I once sold some bitcoins when it was crashing down from $19000. I thought that it is going to collapse completely but I was wrong.
You have no doubt suffered a huge amount of money but I am very much sure that after that loss, you would have never made any such decision of panic selling and that you had hold your coins at time when the market was falling again. This is something which I have learnt too after suffering a huge loss but after that, I never made any such decision which then result in loss of money because of panic selling and loss of control over the emotions.

Anyway, what are some of your guys biggest bitcoin losses?  Did many people here loss everything with Mtcox?  For me it is online casinos.  I do have a moderate gambling habit so it was bound to happen.  :'(

I think you lose your bitcoin because of your gambling habit. I think I have no big personal loss of my bitcoin. I do not gamble, I do not trade, I do not invest. I just cash out the money I earned. Maybe the biggest loss of mine is that , my bitcoin reached an amount of 50K PH Peso when 1BTC = 960K PH Peso but I did not convert it into peso until bitcoin price dump into 500K PH Peso. That time I realized bitcoin will dump more so I converted it. Half of the amount is wasted. My 50K turns into 25K

My biggest loss is participating in a fraudulent scheme where I lost 1.2 bitcoins. It was my start in cryptocurrencies and a very strong lesson. After this incident my faith in earnings on cryptocurrencies didn't break down and I recouped long ago.

Losses is part of the game here so we must learn how to deal with the possible changes that we might encounter here. As for me , my biggest lost was selling in the dip. I was badly in need of money a day ago and I was forced to sell some of my hodlings though it's against my will because I have no choice.

Should i say its a loss or value reduction? Well i will consider it big loss since i invested in bitcoin. I bought the coin at 5K USD when the coin was at a price of 16k and sold it at out since the market was becoming too annoying. I totally run at loss since i sold my bitcoin when the price dropped to 10k.

My biggest personal bitcoin loss was about .195BTC when my etherwallet was hacked. It was stolen from me because of my negligence. I didn’t able to keep my pinkey in a secure place.
Losing your coins in that way is a terrible experience while that has never happened to me it must be very frustrating that you have done a lot of effort to get your tokens only to be stolen just because you made a mistake at some point and a person without morals took everything away from you, I swear that if the market of cryptocurrencies does not succeed it will be because of scammers and hackers.

If seriously speaking buddy then I never had any such great bitcoin loss and I wish I never have such loss but here I disagree with you at one point, that bitcoin is a kind of online gambling and I strongly oppose you at this point. Bitcoin is always be a very wise and great investment and there is nothing to do with gambling because gambling is a game which totally depends on lunch but for investing into bitcoin you need to be very wise to have very good profit but yes luck also plays a role in bitcoin investment.

I only lost few Bitcoin I generated, and ever since then, I have never been involved in any form of Ponzi scheme or cloud mining business in other to vividly avoid strong and future occurrence of such or bigger loss. Probably still considering myself been very timid or fragile in this regard to be loosing what I have over time been generating and accumulating as my store of value, as much as I know there can hardly be high progress without its prior loss/risks in most cases.

Title: Re: Biggest personal bitcoin loss

Losses in bitcoin are usually due to trade or investment that is wrong because of a mentality, for example the price drops then panic and take a sell position. The position of bitcoin is always up and down, in a graph like a swing. Now the price drops means we can be sure the price will rise. If you don't want to lose, don't play currency (conventional or digital) because in that game if you don't win, you will lose.

You are right about this that panic selling is the most common mistake that new bees are performing because they do not know how things work in Bitcoin  or crypto investment with other coins like Ethereum and Litecoin which are highly recommended. They realize their mistake after facing with loses and that time they learn to have patience here in the crypto business but they should think about it in the beginning.
Anyone who is following many topics here in this forum will not lose much as most veteran people here are always suggesting how to protect our hard earned money from losses and what are measurements we must take to protect our assets. We need to follow them then we may avoid or skip losses easily.

True, cause there is not always the same that lose is connected to money that we put more than we could take out, sometimes it is based on example like yours and loss cannot be define that we just "lose" our money in cash.
