This isn't related to the ransom.  The ransom was for earlier tax records (not sure what years) in which Romney supposedly has something to hide.  As the article says, the Romneys are just now filing their 2011 tax returns (probably filed for an extension earlier in the year), and they'll be released later today.

If the Bitcoin extortion did not have anything to do with this decision, why then do this so late in the campaign?

Because they just filed the 2011 returns.  They weren't done until today, so obviously, they couldn't release them earlier.

I can't wait! 6.9 days and counting!

Does anyone have a link to the ransom counter site? Please don't tell me it's still sitting on 3BTC  :D
It is... 3.07 in one, 0.72 in the other.

Ironically, there's more BTC in bets regarding the ransom than there are donated to the tax thieves addresses.

As already mentioned, these are not the infamous blackmail tax returns. These are part of the two years that the campaign has always planned on releasing.

I suspect the end date will come and go and we'll find out the "hackers" are full of shit. I really hope I'm wrong and they release the info, but i doubt it.

At least BTC got some press out of it.

I'm surprised nobody suggested that the extortion is all a PR stunt by Butterfly Labs to promote their soon to be released mid-level 7GH/s "The Romney" ASIC miner :P

Who cares?  A presidential candidate releasing their tax return?  Who gives a shit.  Much more important is why companies like GE don't pay any taxes.

Probably a similar reason why 47M people get paid taxes.
