Military provocations prove Putin is playing with fire

(CNN)Russian President Vladimir Putin is playing a very dangerous game. On July 4, while Americans celebrated Independence Day, a cinematic, tension-filled drama unfolded along America's western skies. In two separate incidents, U.S. fighter jets were scrambled to intercept Russian bombers approaching the country's airspace; first near the California coast, then just outside U.S. airspace over Alaska.

The aircraft's presence was clearly both a warning for the United States, its allies and Russia's neighbors, and also a bit of bravado to please Putin's Russian fans. It is also part of a worrying trend.

Good article. Russia has long complained bitterly about NATO expansion, saying that the Cold War defense alliance was a major security threat as it drew closer to Russia’s borders. The anger grew especially passionate after the Baltic states joined in 2004, and Russian President Vladimir Putin cited fears that Ukraine would join NATO when he annexed the Crimean Peninsula in March last year.

I don't think that NATO will grant membership to Ukraine, even if Poroshenko applies to join the organization. If Ukraine attempts to join the NATO, then Putin will send real Russian troops with heavy weaponry to Kiev, and the battle will be over in a matter of days, if not a few hours. Also, a majority of the people in South and East Ukraine are opposed to NATO membership. They will try to secede from Kiev, if the latter applies for NATO membership.
