Title: ICANN Can Be Fixed

ICANN Can Be Fixed

The Internet governance organization's next CEO must change the way it does business.

Who stands to benefit the most from President Barack Obama's master plan to surrender the U.S.-created Internet to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers? ICANN itself, so it's a little surprising that its board has already accepted (graciously and with gratitude for services rendered, or so we're told) the resignation of its CEO, Fadi Chehade, before the transition is complete.

Chehade is something of an international man of mystery. A serial prevaricator and a slick huckster who can make a persuasive pitch in several languages, he has been a relentless advocate of the Obama plan to let the Internet run itself. So it's a little bit strange that he has announced he's leaving before the mission is complete.

But regardless of who is comfortably parked in its well-paying top slot, the way ICANN operates needs to change. The real problems with ICANN are structural.
