Title: Bitcoin enthusiasts in Greece call for “Plan B”, spread leaflets about bitcoin
Post by: milaliss on July 15, 2015, 08:50:58 AM
Prime minister of Greece, Alexis Tzipras has signed a compromise with Eurozone leaders. Bitcoin enthusiasts use the demonstrations in Athens to spread the leaflets on bitcoins. The first Bitcoin Meetup will start in the Greek capital today.

A group of enthusiasts printed 400 leaflets on bitcoin one day before the meetup. One of them acting under the alias “bitcoin-traveler” published the photos on Reddit.

The leaflet depict an anarchist who throws bitcoin against the globe.

“Greece! Now is the right time for plan B,” says the message in Greek.

Bitcoiners distributed the leaflets at and around Syntagma square in Athens. They put posters on several ATM machines (from which Greeks can withdraw no more than 60 euros a day).

“I was surprised by the interest. I've never dealt flyers before but I know that in my country 8/10 people don't bother reading handouts ever. Here people even came towards me to get a copy. Lots of questions were asked and answered,” says bitcoin-traveler.

Reddit users supported the idea and began a long and lengthy debate on the proper form of the leaflet, making the discussion one of the most popular on Reddit.

This June, Bitcoin experts predicted the popularity boom for Bitcoin in Greece. In June, enthusiasts installed a first bitcoin ATM in the bookshop some 30 minutes away from the Athens’ city centre. On 11 July, Catalonian Company installed another bitcoin ATM at the Center of Innovations in the Greek capital.

This is the interesting part.
Some will buy and hold Bitcoin, it will become the bank they can rely on.

Finally. I remember that when this started I've been asking why no Bitcoin supporters were down there (beginning of June). I'm pretty sure that still most of the people don't know what it is or just don't understand Bitcoin.
There needs to be a combined effort from enthusiasts and from citizens that just started using Bitcoin to spread awareness. Someone should also make a informational video that simplifies Bitcoin, in Greek. The situation there is absolutely terrible, and it can only get worse if they sell 1 fifth of their nation.

Yeah. In some countries they don't even bother to take it, and in others they just throw it away a few meters later.

Fantastic, it's about time someone did this and spread the word because the Greek government is going to sell out the people that's for sure, the revolution shall begin!

The problem with Plan B is that unless you want to accept worthless Drachmas in exchange for your BTC, most Greeks don't have access to their Euro wealth right now so they don't have much to offer for bitcoin.

The only way to stop this absurd vicious circle is start accepting payments directly in BTC to have an actual economy, instead of having to rely on some stupid fiat currency to then convert to BTC with probably annoying fees etc.

Unfortunately for Greek citizens, the Greek government has absolutely no incentive to do any such thing. Today, 99.995% of the population of this planet blindly tolerates their government stealing from them via inflation [printing money] on a daily basis.

Just like socialism, you'll never see any government authority coming to bitcoin on their own. It will only happen if/when the people of a nation force it upon their government by breaking the law and rejecting the value of [refusing to honor!] national fiat scrip.
