Title: Looking for beta testers - Bitcoin penny auction site
Post by: mhughes on September 24, 2012, 06:10:07 PM
I spent the weekend hacking together my first foray into the bitcoin world.  It's a penny-auction site (like Quibids or any of the other similars) paid in bitcoin.

It will be auctioning off new items, and sometimes auctions for bitcoin itself.

I'm looking for a few beta testers to help work out the kinks.

What do you get:
Free BTC!  Or at least a chance at winning some bitcoin on an auction.  I'm planning on going through 5BTC total in a few auctions over a week or so.  I'll spread around some free bids before each batch of test-auctions,  in this round of testing you don't have to spend anything, not a single BTC.

How to help:
Sign up for an account at http://bidfast.co/
Then post here letting me know some date/times you'd be available to try it

What do I get:
A chance to test out the site.  Hopefully, you'll also be able to give me some feedback on what you think.

Details...
I'm shooting for 6 batches of auctions with rewards from 0.2 to 2 BTC

Are you going to tell people who you are and why they should trust your site ?

Thanks for everyone who has been signing up.  Would like just a couple more people before the first test.  I'm hoping I can start one tomorrow (Wed Sep 26) around Noon EST - I'll shoot out an email letting you know.

Are you going to tell people who you are and why they should trust your site ?

I wasn't worrying too much about that since I'm not asking for any money from anyone yet.  But this is me:

Code:
Marc Hughes
Rogue Software Development LLC
MA, USA

That should be enough info for anyone who's interested to find me.  I'll post a proper about-us style page on the site with more info before it goes live for real.

Thanks for the intrest from everyone!

We definitely have enough people for a test tomorrow.  Still taking signups for anyone else interested.

Some notes about the site...

This is a very minimal site that only functions enough to test out the viability of the idea.  If you've ever heard the terms Lean Startup or Minimal Viable Product, that's what we're doing here.  This is the best time to make suggestions to help us improve what will eventually be the final product, and I really appreciate any feedback I can get.

We definitely have enough people for a test tomorrow.

Maybe you could list a new item on home page with countdown timer on it. 24hours count down timer should be ok, so most of us catch up this free auction

I'll just give notes here and maybe other people will join in with me.

The first thing about your site is that is looks like a site you'd find on linkbucks or something. What I mean by that is, it just looks to good to be true.
The layout is too basic, not eye popping enough and most people (including myself) would just close without a second though.
Nothing of this site looks like it promises what its saying.

Of course it is beta but a little work can go a long way, I'll still critique it before it goes alpha.

Under Chrome, sometimes when I hover over the auction type link, the description fades in momentarily, but disappears too fast to read.
I think it happens when you hover on/off it before it fully fades in then hover back on.

Congrats to djohn for winning the first one.

Thanks everyone for the first test.  Please do leave any feedback.

Had a few timing/display issues that need sorting out.  I'll be looking into those before the next test.

The bids went smoothly, except maybe the last second before the end of the auction where it seemed like the counter went from 0:01 to 0:00 twice meaning that it did something like 0:01 -> 0:00 -> 0:01 -> 0:00.

Yeah, I noticed that too.  Want to get it fixed before the next one.

Did you ever see the "Going..." message?

There are a couple new auctions set up for tomorrow that are scheduled to end around 2:45 PM EST.  One for 0.25BTC and one for 0.5BTC

I've updated everyone's account to have 10 free bids.  You'll need to decide on how to split your bids between the auctions.

I saw that thrice. But other than a few minor hiccups I'm surprised how well the auction went. I participated from my iPhone, so it would be nice to see a mobile version included, maybe just done with some CSS wizardry using relative placements and sizings through percentages. Can't wait for the next auction!

Few minutes before original start time of the auctions, you added two identical auctions. From this time I didnt saw time renmaining on all auctions, so for me it was blind auction. But this was the only issue I saw

Sorry, I'm a bit late giving feedback. Anyway, I was playing around in the bidding action, and actually ended up winning one of the .5 BTC auctions. So far the UI looks good, and it seems to all work right.

It turns out my business liability insurance won't cover this site and it risks me losing my insurance across the board.  Because of that, I won't be developing bidfast any further.

Quick post-mortem: Never took a single BTC from anyone, and paid out all outstanding debts.  I will delete all personal information from the database.  For me, ~$100 and ~ a week's work was an acceptable cost to run an experiment to test the viability of a site like this.

If anyone would like to purchase the code and/or domain behind the site, please PM me.

On to find something else, I suppose.
