...
The digital payments space has been booming recently. Canadian-born companies like PayFirma and NetSecure are already active in the mobile payments industry, not to mention American counterparts such as Square, as well as some failed ideas such as the Bitcoin.

Wait.. so.. Bitcoin  is active in the mobile payments industry...  and is a failed idea?

Perhaps he only meant to say that Bitcoin failed to get any acknowledgment from the MintChip folk despite being a voters favorite in their competition.
Whatever he meant - that's some piss poor journalism right there.

Oh wow, so mintwallet, which is basically just a reskin of various bitcoin apps, wins, and bitcoin is a "failed idea"?
Get a grip, bitcoin is doing $15-35 million a week in trade all over the world, it is decentralised, deregulated, and can't be inflated to nothing by any government anywhere in the world.
I call that a pretty good idea, personally.

The Bitcoin failed? That's a shame. I had such high hopes for the Bitcoin.  :P

I think this sums it up:

Five out of the first six comments are specifically calling them out re: their Bitcoin FUD.  (But that's no reason not to pile on.)  Here's the comment I just left:

"failed ideas such as the [sic] Bitcoin"

Yeah, it's too bad about Bitcoin. I'm embarrassed to admit it now, but I was one of the people dumb enough enough to buy into this obvious scam. I converted some U.S. dollars to bitcoins a few months ago for around $5.00 a coin. Well, now those coins are trading for around $12.00 a piece. See the problem? That's not how currencies are supposed to work! They're supposed to continually LOSE purchasing power. And that lost purchasing power is supposed to be funneled to a powerful and politically-connected financial elite. This is basic stuff. Like I said, this Bitcoin thing is obviously a scam. Oh, and keep up the crackerjack reporting, Techvibes!

The Royal Canadian Mint awarded more than $50,000 in prizes to the winners, including [tungsten-filled] gold.
