How much do you want to spend on miners? Where will you put them? Is it a small room that will overheat in 20 minutes or a large ventilated facility? If power and heat aren't an issue then buy a shit load of S1's (or any other outdated inefficient hardware) and used server psu's :). Only "building" would be if you got like usb stick miners and put it together. But still you are not building the miner. Most will be a all in one. I suggest looking at S3 or newer miners and really go with a budget in your head. I don't mean to hijack the thread, but out of curiosity: considering free power, and a couple of S3's, how long would you realistically have to wait before you could expect ROI? Also, are there any reliable sites that show such calculations, and do they take into account rising difficulty? Thanks. Apart from mining bitcoins - can be calculated as soon as you know your budget - there are other things you can do with free electricity. (For example build a server and sell out VPS, VPN accounts, cloud storage and backup systems for friends and family, possibly a bit larger user group. Thanks hedgy73. :) Well again it all depends on what your plan is but before you go buying s3's they may not be the most gh/s per dollar and you'll need a power supply. Is heat and noise an issue for you? Hmm, not really. If I were to go ahead with this (and I'm not even sure I would be able to get free power at this point in time), they wouldn't be set up anywhere those would be a problem - well, noise wouldn't at least; not sure about the heat, particularly during summer, but I guess that's what the AC is for. Rent out space for other people's small servers etc etc.) Well, as far as budget goes, at the moment, I wouldn't be willing to spend more than about 2 BTC; but, as I said above, I'm still not even sure I would be able to get free power (possibly through some sort of arrangement with a couple of friends; if that doesn't work out, then I guess this would never be profitable with my budget and usual power costs around here) - so, I'm basically just looking at the options for now (in that regard, thanks for the other suggestions you posted, though I'm not sure your post was directed at me or at mrbigA ;)). There is NO such thing as "free power" unless you're stealing it. You are either in a dorm, rented office/apartment, stealing it from mom or in a military barracks. And you have access to a VERY limited amount of power until it's noticed by authorities/parents before it's questioned and ended. So why build a whole hypothesis on what to do with your "free power"? Your biggest problems other than "free power" (that will be quickly taken away) will be cooling and noise. A small dorm room/office/basement/barracks will become a very noisy sauna that will be unbearable to endure. So please, stop with this stupid scenario! Don't make a mistake some do and get some horribly cheap PSU. Server PSU's have become pretty popular lately. And seem to be cheaper then ATX. And I live in an area that doesn't really have winter. When I ran my miners last winter, I still had to open windows and use fans. And I used the A/C more than a few times, lol. |
