Not necessarily for sale, but figured I'd see if there's any interest out there. Was planning to hold this long-term.

This paper is EXTREMELY hard to come by. Garages and attics all over the world are filled with newspapers depicting historic events (man walks on moon! elvis dead! etc), but this particular copy of The Times was completely unremarkable the day it was published, and most of the edition likely ended up in landfills.  Super hard to find, and therefore super hard to price. Charlie Shrem talked about selling one of these for 8-10btc at a conference, but I can't find any solid info beyond that.

The coin base parameter on the bitcoin genesis block (block 0) contain this string:

Which translate into:
"The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks"

When Satoshi forged the Genesis block he made this to link the date to a real world physical item, the New York UK Times headline for the 2009-01-03.


This is also the reason why the newspaper is rare, there was no big international event that day.
But for bitcoiners is this ofcause a very very very very important date, and that is why some collectors are willing to pay big bucks for this news paper.

One correction, that's The Times (UK newspaper) not The New York Times. :)

This is the full original. There's a minor tear on the back page (nothing missing), and it's the Scotland edition.

I couldn't read the certificate in this thread but found: https://i.imgur.com/5s3f3rz.jpg and was able to read it, very cool!  I'm going to contact paperspast to see if they have more but I suspect they are out.. :(

Yep, I contacted them looking for info on the certificate. They don't have any more copies, were slightly confused by all the requests they'd been getting, and wouldn't tell me too much about the certificate except that it came from them.

But that paper does have a great historic event on the cover.

Dang that is a cool piece of history.  Insanely jealous you were able to buy it for .26 btc.  I would scoop as many as I could up in a heart beat at that price and frame them.

i ***assume*** only the front page holds value. Or most of it. The full front page, mint shape, uncut. perfect corners are important. It's all about those shitty edges. That's why I would like some more photos.

Also I know u do a lot of printing and stuff, could you have it perfectly framed too? The right size, high quality frame. It's got to preserve it.

I have tried all outlets in the UK for additional copies. There are none available. Some say they have them, you go through to purchase, they accept your order, and they then are forced to cancel it when they realise they dont actually have one. These do not come up for sale very often. If anyone is wanting a copy, take this chance, no saying when the next one would come along. Rarer than a Karpeles apology.

This is another one of those "damn i wish i had a time machine" moment.

Maybe it is also a clue about Satoshi's mysteries? ;)

Well... You can look at it in two ways:
1. Satoshi must be from UK since he used the UK times.
2. Satoshi is not from UK, since he would never use a paper from his home country, since it would be easier to guess his identity.

So bottom line, the newspaper provides no useable clue.

Speaking off Satoshi, I think those analysis made, where someone found correlation in noun spectra for the first 0-50000 blocks is really interesting.
The statical information could be used to make a "good guess" on how many block rewards he actually claimed.
Another interesting thing, the first blocks mined (especially block 0), is much more worth than 50 BTC, these virgin coins could properly be sold on auction at a much higher price.

Naw i didnt mean it literally/simply like for a location of where Satoshi is from. Just a piece of the puzzle or words in the articles etc. After all, this is cryptography and developers often love adding "easter eggs" to their projects. So why not a Crypto easter egg? ;)

I did once have another copy and I traded it with Charlie ... Not for anywhere near the price he was talking about selling one for though. Regretted it for a while until that other one came along. Thought I wasn't gonna find another.

Copyright law prevents me from duplicating the cover without permission, but I've been toying with doing a print that involves this particular newspaper in a "derived work" sort of manner. Summer is busy time for paid work, though, so you might not see it for a while  8)
