Title: Is mining with a regular computer profitable?
Post by: 1800ninjafrog on July 31, 2015, 05:38:54 PM
I've never mined before but i am looking into it. Is it possible to make a profit mining cryptocurrencies with an average computer? I have read a decent amount about mining, and I know its not a get rich quick scheme, but are there any currencies where mining is actually profitable without ASIC or a powerful computer. If so, what currencies would you recommend to start mining?

Depends what alt-coin you want to mine. At the moment, Litecoin and Dogecoin, right now, not profitable without a newer AMD GPU. So, in short, nope.

hu ? probably not profitable unless you have an asic...

For the bitcoin forget it. I don't know it it will be profitable for the other coins but even if it will be possible the earnings will be very low because their price it will be very low. So, to resume, no. You must have a good ASIC to earn something good.

No mate is not possible. Or to be fairy maybe is possible but is not profitable. You will not earn nothing with your computer if you will want to mine bitcoin. Mining with computer is obsolete because the cpu and the gpu are not capable to mine nothing.

Even though for some alt coinslike DOGE, LTC,etc., CPU mining is already dead. But still having some CPU minable cons like XMR, BCN, QCN, etc., For more info refer ► https://minergate.com

It depends on what is required for you to get started, and what you mean by "profitable".  If you already have a computer that is running 24/7, and a reasonably powerful gpu, then absolutely it is profitable.  you won't get rich doing it, but you will make money.  The trick is to find the sweet spot of efficiency.  In other words, running your gpu at maximum possible hash may not be the most profitable.  Figure out your power usage vs the amount of money you make, per day.  Look for the sweet spot between minimum power usage and maximum hash rate.

If you are considering setting up a gpu farm....then you have to factor in how long it will take to recover the equipment cost.  if you are rich, then you can just eat the equipment cost and set it up as an extra income source.  If you are not, and need to recover those costs.....then you need to seriously do some major planning.  Everyone wants to get in on coin mining.  Which means, if you don't go huge right off the bat, you can't ever recover your equipment costs.  Why?  Because as time passes, mining always becomes less and less profitable.  I have already seen a few people with gpu farms talk about shutting down until it becomes profitable again...if ever.

Mine a coin with CPU isnīt profitable, But you need take a test to checking what is said here, A option is minergate to mine ByteCoin or anothers cryptonight algos with same interface.

I am not sure because the income you can depend on the coin you are mine: D

there are 5 idle cpu's here in our office that I can use to mine, but based on the feedback here, looks like its not a good idea.

all depends on the model of cpu :)

In answer to your question, no.
If you have a computer on already, and if your electricity consumption increase is not your problem, then it won't hurt to try things out.
If you go about it as 'finding stuff out and trying things' rather than a 'get rich quick' then you won't be disappointed.

Have a look at the parameter 'difficulty' for bitcoin, and how that went up after the ASICS arrived in late 2013.  The bitcoin price in mid 2015 is about right for a commercial enterprise running ASIC miners on "cheap" electricity and cashing in their bitcoin as early as possible.  That chases away some of the other mining rigs to seek the best paying altcoin, so some of those get ASIC attention too.  You can compare sha256d altcoins by their present reward divided by difficulty.

Perhaps profit is the wrong goal to seek.  Disestablishment of the bank-led catastrophicly bad double-or bust economy whilst protecting transaction banking for all honest productives worldwide is closer to my reason for wanting bitcoin to go well.  My collecting a few from ASIC mining is a by-product.

Depends what alt-coin you want to mine. At the moment, Litecoin and Dogecoin, right now, not profitable without a newer AMD GPU. So, in short, nope.

NO Scrypt coin has been GPU mineable for a profit for ballpark a year and a half even WITH cheap electric. Gridseed didn't quite manage to kill that idea, but they made it very difficult then the competition arrived and killed the idea.

Forget anything SHA-256 based like Bitcoin, those haven't been GPU mineable for years at a profit.

X11 and other later algorythm based coins can be, if you optimise the setup for them - right now the NVidea Maxwell boards like the GTX750, GTX960/970/980 seem to be optimum for those type coins but do your research first, things CHANGE.

You also need fairly low cost of electric even on those altcoins that CAN be mined profitably.

I don't know offhand of any coin that can be profitably mined with CPUs, but some of the really new stuff might be.

It is interesting you happened to mention that.  I just read an article this morning on the Greek banking situation, and how people were desperately trying to get their lives back in order, but the banking restrictions are so draconian as to keep people from even paying there every day bills.  The thought that occurred to me whilst reading through the article was along the lines of how a sudden "mass-adoption of crypto-currencies" throughout Greece could almost instantly render the banking restrictions null and void.  Plus, it has the potential to permanently end the bank's control over the Greek citizens.

it could be advantageous sir, when you get a new coin that is still fresh and still a little block that you will get a lot of reward there  ;D

Any examples of few coins that are fresh, have a little block that you can get a decent reward fr with a cpu mining? I am currently mining bytecent. But have another computer available and looking into diversifying a bit.

mining has long been a loss. have a profit only those who sell mining equipment

if you want to use mining CPU to get profit :
1. First, you should pay attention to CPU processor, see in task manager if using windows OS, when mining performance "CPU USAGE" will be 90% -100%. For a long-term time, you should regularly change paste processor. Keep in mind the pasta cost.
2. Secondly, the electricity for your mining should be free.
3. thirdly, the internet for mining you should be free.

therefore most people are already using GPU or ASIC.

Just mine coins before they go to the moon and it's always profitable.

I managed to make a small profit from mining on 2-3 "average" computers. This was mostly because I kept a watchful eye for new coins that I thought could catch on and hopped in on mining them immediately. I guess I just got lucky; I easily could have just wasted a bunch of time and power mining one of the many coins that goes nowhere.

Mining the most profitable coin and buying the coin your speculating in makes even more sense.

True, but new coins not on any exchanges are risky to buy with peer-to-peer transactions and generally have more upside than coins with established open-market value.

How about the current value of that coon and electricity amount you spare for mining that coin on your computer. Please do research mining calculator and check whether it is profitable on crytocompare or anytinhg else.
You will not get the profit even a 1 percent at all. Perfect lose only you are getting now. May be that coin you mine may take 5 years or more to reach one USD wait until that.

CPU mining is only really profitable for some relatively new CPU-only coins.
Otherwise the profit will be really low.

Where do you get free electricity/internet? lol
And I don't know any server provider changing thermal compound regularly and servers are also running 24/7.
In general I'd say CPU mining is only really profitable if your PC is running 24/7 anyway or if you're combining it with GPU mining.

Your opinion is correct, electricity and internet are not free. I just think if electricity and free internet are possible with mining CPU will get a profit hehe.

but there's a friend of mine; he's doing CPU mining in government offices, internet and electricity to be free, during mining in that place.

government offices - well, let's see if it was worth it when he will get caught  ;D

At least for my i7 6700k I can tell you that I'm earning ~ 15.28 $ per Week by mining this coin:
https://crds.co/

In combination with GPU-mining it's a nice 'bonus'.

Regards,
Nestade

I am very grateful to you for the information. I will inform my friend about it, but I do not know what processor he uses for his mining.

If electricity and internet are free, 15.28 $ is a fantastic number, hehe. thanks Nestade

The idea of mining coins attracts everyone. But agree that the price of coins will be very low if everyone will be able to easily extract them. Forget this idea or buy expensive equipment designed for cryptocurrency mining. You can choose between mining with ASIC or GPU. But to get the coins on the old computer is not possible.
