Title: $2000 on a new super rig or add more graphics cards to current
Post by: The Koolio on June 03, 2011, 12:22:00 AM
A explained in a previous post i have $2000. I currently run my o/c 5870 with super stable hash at 440. Given a new psu and case i could buy more cards to put in, or do you think i should just build a new super rig to put along side with 3 x 5870's or two 6990? any other suggestions are welcome!

I'd take that money and invest in BTC directly.

So many threads without any criteria to be met. What do you want? To maximize profit? To minimize noise and heat? To maximize your e-peen?

If you want to make the most money I suggest you check http://www.psychic-forum.com/forum/ instead. Minimizing noise and heat would behoove you to build another rig to keep cards spaced out and happy. Maximizing epeen definitely entails lots of 6990s.

power usage, heat, noise... these are all irrelevant to me. My aim is to mine enough coins so that 2-3 months down the line, if the price hits $20 or over i have a nice payout. I want to aim at least 1.5 Ghash maybe 2 if poss

In that case, seriously don't bother buying a rig. You will get more coins for your money buying them directly now and sitting on them.

- Power Usage absolutely is relevant to you (unless you are stealing electricity).
- Heat absolutely is relevant to you because you have to find some way to deal with it. Special exhaust considerations. Also, it will increase your air conditioning usage.

If you just want to have coins in case it goes to $20, then just buy the coins. It will be more profitable.

We are going to upgrade to an unlimited tariff (with fair usage of double what i need) and heat is not an issue because my rig would be in front of a well vented window... weather in UK sucks so isnt that hot yet

Personally, for me it's not all about the profit potential either. It's about being part of the community and network when it has just started taking off and going mainstream. It's about learning new things. Increasing your sysadmin skills, and so on. Politics plays hugely into it as well for me.

Do people not read anything outside of mining section? It's sad and funny at the same time how people are still dumping money into rigs. Ever since the rise above $1 this year or so, buying had been proven much more profitable many times over by many different people, yet people still just buy rigs.  ;D

I can't find the link now, but there was even a calc where they show you that you will never mine as many btc as you can buy with the same money today even running your miner until you are in the red.
