Title: Best BitCoin client on Mac OS X
Post by: spectre on October 02, 2012, 05:38:26 PM
Since I'm so far restricted to the newbie zone I'll ask my question here:

What is currently considered to be the best BitCoin client for Mac OS X? I'm looking for something simple with a nice interface that would compliment the OS. Definitely no need for mining functionality (and possibility to disable mining is a must as frankly my machine is in no shape to do anything relevant at the current difficulty level).

Thanks for your assistance!

I don't know if it's the best, but I've been using https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin-Qt (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin-Qt) on my Mac for about a year.  It works just fine.

If you're just getting started, I'd recommend trying a wallet at Blockchain.info:
https://blockchain.info/wallet/

It's a web interface and not a Mac OS X specific app, but you're still in control of your private keys. You won't have to worry about downloading the blockchain and keeping it up to date. The interface makes it easy to create encrypted backups and download them, store them on Dropbox, or email them to yourself. It also works on iOS devices if you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

I second using blockchain.info. They really did a great job with that site.

I'd suggest you try bitcoin-qt from bitcoin.org

Welcome!

I've been using Bitcoin-QT and it works well.  However, downloading/updating the block chain does take awhile.

I've also opened a blockchain.info wallet and am really impressed with it.  I find myself wanting to use it more and more over the Bitcoin-QT client.  So two thumbs up for both of those options.

I could not get electrum to work on 10.6.   :(

Bitcoin-QT 0.8.1 is not working for my mac - says it needs upgrading. So I'm using Electrum.

I use bitcoin-qt on 10.6.8.  Takes a long time to download the blockchain.

I can recommend Multi-Bit.

Its fast, because it doesn't need the whole blockchain.

It looks decent and does its job as a wallet for small amounts.
Exporting encrypted privatekeys and such is easy.

There are some key features missing though (like wallet encryption).

Necroing this thread for completeness. Two new OS X wallets have appeared on the scene:

Hive looks like a great choice.

If you read the hive thread it is still not for "day to day use" but I agree it looks promising!  Grabhive all I can say is GO, GO, GO!!!

In the meantime I think the core QT client (though downloading the blockchain is a pain) and blockchain.info remain two of the best choices.

Armory and Bitcoin-qt the only clients I will use cause they are the safest. I have hive installed but that is just to watch what they are doing, and when it is more stable I will start to use it more and more.

This is the recommended course of action for the time being. But it should be said, unless Alan Reiner loses his interest in being a badass we'll probably never be as safe as Armory. :-)
