Title: Bullish Percent Index for cryptos
Post by: klee on August 12, 2015, 10:17:33 AM
Hi all.

I will make a new P&F chart for BPI for cryptos. I decided to use 20 coins, including of course BTC.

Help me choose the next 19. You have 3 votes. Use them wisely.

I think that the 50 coins listed here are more than enough.

If you want a not listed coin, post here and we will see what can be done - I won't take into consideration newbies accounts.

DO NOT START comparisons and fights on coins. You will make me lock the topic.

Mods I think this is best suited here (Speculation) because BPI will help to determine if the general trend in cryptos is about to change (so we can start fishing the bottom or selling the top of coins that still have not catch up with the new trend, including BTC - eg if we have many alts giving buy signals while BTC is still in bear mode this is a signal to start buying cheap BTCs).

But if you like move it in the alt section.

EDIT: The coins are listed in no particular order!!!

EDIT 2: More on BPI -> http://stockcharts.com/school/doku.php?id=chart_school:technical_indicators:bullish_percent_inde

Imagine that the BPI is something like an RSI of a sector, in this particular case the cryptocurrencies sector.
It gives an 'overbought/oversold' indication of the market.

I think that 1 October is a good date to end the poll.

Any objections?

Just pick them by Trading Volume.
This can be tricky - in any case 20 coins are more than enough to include all popular coins that have a decent volume too!

This can't be avoided unfortunately (if true) - but I think it is not critical for the purpose of the project.

After all, Ethereum have to be added anyway (for various reasons).

Problem is with draws at the bottom of the 20 coins - maybe I will have to make a new poll with them. We will see...

Title: Re: Bullish Percent Index for cryptos
Post by: klee on August 12, 2015, 11:52:33 AM

The 20 coins list will be dynamic in time - if a coin gets enough popularity and/or volume it will be added.

The poll will just help to kickstart this effort, the coins will be added/removed dynamically based on the above factors...

Yes i am new here, but that is my only account! and i believe in eth and few more coins. Btc was the first one, but not the only one which will be in use in future.

nxt and xrp cc (cryptocurrency) could also be good in future imo

Just pick them by Trading Volume.

I completely agree. That's actually what I do here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=927144

Right now, there are actually only 10 coins with decent volume. BTC, LTC, DASH, DOGE, POT, NMC, BTS, ANC, XMR, XRP. You should forget the voting, and just go with these coins.

(My post is actually unnecessarily complicated. I look at 2 factors -- coins that are not too new, and coins with decent volume. However, I could have just looked at coins with decent volume. All of them are not too new.)

Title: Re: Bullish Percent Index for cryptos

I am voting for the last 3 coins on my list. Other people will vote for the more popular coins anyway. ANC, XMR, XRP. But again, forget the poll, and just go by the volume. See my post.

I use coinmarketcap and coincap to sort by volume too - the 'old' and decent in volume one are already known and will probably take the first 10-15 places in the list.

Problem is there are 'forgotten' coins who suddenly awake and I want to be a bit flexible to include some more coins in the list so I can catch them too.

For example you mention ANC which is an old one but it's volume (on the two sites I mentioned above) sucks - should I include it or not? This poll will help a bit.

I already have my 10-15 top picks, I just wanna give people & the market a chance to be heard some more so maybe I can be more objective on my picks...

I see you did a great job on you thread - what are the top 20 in your list?

I think it is very probable to use your analysis but maybe run the poll anyway so we have some second thought on newcomers (like ETH).

The ultimate poll is trading volume.

I get what you are saying about not missing forgotten coins. A poll will not help with that because a new coin can become important after the poll closes. You basically have to update your list of coins every now and then. Running polls all the time is cumbersome and not accurate. Looking at the volume is a lot easier.

Having an index with a list of coins that's changing might seem tricky but it's really not. All the stock indices are made from lists that are changing over time too. Basically, you can calculate the daily percent change for each coin on the list, then average that across coins. That should keep your index continuous even as you swap coins in and out of the list.

An important issue in developing my list was how I calculated the volume. All the websites I could find, and the ones you mention, just give one day volume. That's worthless. Lots of shit coins can have a huge volume day. Lots of better coins can have a low volume day, because, after all, the alt coin market is not that liquid. One day volume is meaningless.

What I do is look at volume over the past month. The exact period does not matter. What matters is that you have to take more than one day into account.

My list does not have a preset number of coins. I did not set out to make a list of 10 coins. I set out to make a list of coins with a daily volume of $10k or more. Right now, that happens to be 10 coins. Tomorrow, it could be more or less. If a low volume coin starts gaining volume, you can add it to your list. So I don't have a "top 20".

When I last updated my list, which was a couple of weeks ago, ANC had a volume of $23,700 per day. Yes, it's pretty low, but my cutoff of $10k per day was low too.

Crypti (XCR) added.

I will talk with Joe200 on how to make this as efficient as possible.

BPI is a slow indicator so we need as much as possible the list to be relatively stable.
I would like not to have to change it for at least 6 months, preferably 1 year.

Maybe if Joe200 can tweak a bit his formula and with feedback from here we can finally (as a community) pick with success 15 out of 20 coins that are here to stay, and only need to edit about 5 of them every year.

Of course if the sector gets 'real', nothing wrong on having 100 powerful coins in our list and get better signals too (I hope Bitcoin maximalists don't start throwing stones at me)!

Yes, a few stakeholders are cashing out a part (can't blame them), it had to happen at some time. After that being done; better distribution.

I think BPI for the crypto sector is a great idea. I think having 20 constituent coins is a good idea, too.

I'm less enthusiastic about voting in the constituents. Like other posters, I think trading volume is the most useful way to select most/all of the constituents. Could I suggest making the top 15 the largest (by trading volume) coins, and the next 5 maybe select them by "biggest movers" - e.g. if a coin moves from 100th to 50th on the list, it's moved 50 - if that was the largest move it'd be placed 16th on the list.

Regardless of the above, I believe the methodology for choosing the constituent coins should be fixed and known in advance - otherwise it'll just lead to arguments about why coin X was selected and coin Y wasn't. I'd like BPI to be as representative of the crypto sector as possible - I don't believe that's as likely to happen if the constituents are chosen by polling a small subset of all coin users.

I agree trading volume is important but, so is stability and raising value. Coins with stable upward curves in adoption and value will help stabilize the index. I also agree coins with low volume AND wild swings in value are a destabilizing factor. I would be careful with "special" features or "off the wall" functions or algorithms, their ever changing volumes and wild swings in value could destabilize your index.

I want a seperate index for company backed coins, anonymous coins, PoS only, PoW only, hybrid etc.

Cryptos sector has sub-sectors...

That is good to see NAV and SSD already added there, this would be more interesting you are going to make separate index with different categories with different labels. this is really great piece of work so keep it up this spirit, good luck buddy :)

As with every other alt thread in history, this is going to be nothing but a long list of people bigging up their pet coins.

In which case Rapecoin has a bright future because rape will always be with us and people want to spend money in a way related to it. Perhaps.

Surprised this thread still hasn't been moved to one of the Alt sections. I have moderately high expectations for ETH.... so I think that should definitely be included. Most others I'm not so sure about, although I don't see XMR or XRP going the way of the dodo for some time, so....

LAST coins to add were NEOS, GRF & MINT.

I won't add any new coins for this poll. So DO NOT ask for new additions please.

Guys don't freak out, the poll will be used as a complementary measure to the formula and if a coin is not included now but is successfull in the future it will be added too.

Most important is volume and age. Then is backing (community and/or a company invested).

And probably there will be more than 1 indexes so no need to worry.

Shouldn't this thread be in the ALTCOIN sub-forum?
No problem in this personally. But keep in mind that I bought cheap BTCs when I saw Chinese pumping STR, XRP & LTC. BTC was asleep back then...
EDIT: IT WAS THE FIRST BULLISH SIGNS IN THE MARKET FOR A LONG TIME!

This won't affect the cause of the project.

As for Rapecoin you should ask (your friends maybe?) ISIS...

There are people selling bitcointalk accounts on this forum, so I am not sure how accurate/representative this voting really is. I think each coin should be evaluated on how usefulness/uniqueness it really is, rather than voting, which is very easily rigged.

Something to keep in mind.

I voted for for Gridcoin (GRC), as I think replacing mining with doing research for scientific projects, for example to cure Ebola (http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/research/oet1/overview.do), fold proetins (https://boinc.bakerlab.org/) or find aliens (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/) is very good. Then the money is worth the useful computations that were given to the public to create the money.

Making this possible in a dencetralized way is very hard, but I think the current approach of Gridcoin solves this problem very well. You can read about it here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PE4Rb6JylkVxj031pHW6aNPU-PLh_VenLHTkgqcZ2NM/edit#heading=h.1nx0jl77hp5r

From a user's point of view he simply has to run the simulations from the different projects on BOINC and the Gridcoin client. Then Gridcoin comes to a consensus, who has contributed how much computing power to BOINC, which can for example be seen here: http://gridresearchcorp.com/gridcoin/?result&t=CPID_Leaderboard . In some blocks this consenus is saved in the blockchain and the reward one gets when staking a block is proportional to the amount of research recently contributed by this user as it is stored in the blockchain.

All in one I think this is very useful and different to standard altcoins and that's why I invested in Gridcoin.

Great entry point by the way for anybody that wished to enter into NXT.

EDIT 2: More on BPI -> http://stockcharts.com/school/doku.php?id=chart_school:technical_indicators:bullish_percent_inde

EDIT 3: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1151078.msg12120908#msg12120908

EDIT 4: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1151078.msg12121417#msg12121417

So have u chosen these 19 coins? If yes, which ones?
