If you deleted the wallet.dat file, and don't have a backup, i'm afraid you're lost... Unless you remember your private key, but getting this key from the bitcoin core requires some technical knowledge (since you have to go to the debug window, and type in a command)....

Hope your wallet didn't contain to much BTC  :(

Well.... IF you backed up your wallet.dat BEFORE you reinstalled your PC, you're OK :)
Just copy the backupped wallet.dat over the existing wallet.dat in your Bitcoin-folder (usually C:\Users\%YOURUSERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin in windows) and restart bitcoin core...

If you are asking if it works AFTER you reinstalled your PC, i'm afraid the answer is no, it is still a good idear to make a new backup this time, in case you reformat or crash your pc in the future....

you can try data recovering tools if you had some significative amount of coins, or even professional data recovery if you had a big amount of coins and no backup

but nothing is warranted

It all depends on how many coins OP had.  I'm guessing with this mistake not a ton, but I could be surprised.

If you had a lot (were talking enough for a data recovery expert) then shut down computer and don't use it.  You will pay a LOT and have a chance of getting it, again it is far from guaranteed.  And in 99 percent of these the cost of the expert would be worth more the the loss of the amount of BTC.

Make sure you look for a no-cure-no-pay expert with a fixed rate when you're going for data recovery... I've seen them around in my country... Like notlist3d said: it's far from sure they'll be able to recover the file (it's mostly dependant on the fact wether or not the sectors where your wallet.dat resided were overwritten or not... and if they were overwritten: how many times)... And it would be a real bummer if they gave you a big bill without recovering your wallet.dat (that would be a double loss)  :-\

there are some advanced tools that, can let you retrieve file that are eliminated, if he hold a tons of bitcoin in that wallet.dat i would  try it as a last resort

but if he made a secure erase i think his coins are done

I hope we have not lost you as a Bitcoin user.

For beginners I do not recommend to use the Bitcoin Core client.
Instead use an SPV wallet. For example Electrum (https://electrum.org)
When you create a wallet you will be given 25 words. As long as you have them you can recovery every address in your wallet.

that is why it is always recommended to use online wallet which r genuine like ( coinbase and xapo / igot) because if forget u can get back the datas from them. after becoming PRO u can use the desktop wallets :)

DATA RECOVERY is the only second option you have to receover your datas , if your lucky ???

i should not ask you about if you save the private key or not since im sure you didnt :(

just do what @amph sayd, if you are not able to recover your wallet.dat in that way then your bitcoins are lost forever, if this is the case, im so sorry about it man, next time try to be more carrefully with it.

I would never recommend that people use online wallets.

The first rule of Bitcoin is that if you don't own the private key you don't own the coins.

I think this is becoming a real problem as this project of ours moves forward.

People PLEASE, take care of your own coins and don't rely on third party services.

I reccommend a proper cold wallet.  If done right it can be very secure and safe.  In this case could have saved OP.

If he had used a paper wallet, does not matter if PC is reformatted as he has the paper version in a safe spot.  It is sad to see stories like this but they are preventable.

if not, they are gone
