Title: [2015-08-12] Bitcoin Being Increasingly Used by Tourists
Post by: tyz on August 12, 2015, 04:42:14 PM
Biometric authentication company NXT-ID has observed that Bitcoin is now being increasingly used as a standard currency more often, especially by tourists. Many instead of converting Euros choose to bring Bitcoin.

Some countries have silly limits on the amount of currency you are allowed to take out of the country. Bitcoin can function as cash in some instances and it adds to your spending budget, if you have a extra

method of payment. It's so convenient and fast, and hassle-free. You also have a lower risk of theft / loss when you travel abroad and you have no safe way to store your currency.

I would rather walk around with a mobile phone and draw little attention to myself, than carrying a wad of cash and painting a target on my back to all pick pockets out there.  ;)

And don't forget the ridiculous fees that go with the conversion of said money...

Good and I hope it continues to rise. I really think bitcoin could become a multi-national worldwide currency. It's expensive to exchnage money abroad and even more so to withdraw from ATMs so bitcoin could really thrive here.

In cities like Arnhem you can go shopping and enjoy the day only with Bitcoin.
So many stores, cafes etc accepting it. If you ever should be in the Netherlands I recommend to go there and check it out. Pretty cool city and people.

It would have been better if they had given some numbers in this article.
While Bitcoin does solve a lot of problems, you still need fiat to get around. The article mentions that BTC is accepted in some restaurants, amusement parks and gift shops. We still have a long way to go.  :)

I really hope your mobile phone never get stolen (or lost) otherwise you lost also your valued BTC wallet. Here, a lot of mobiles are reported as stolen by tourists. Probably if use draw out an iPhone, the last Samsung Galaxy or any other valued smartphone, you're still painting a target on your back to all thiefs & scumbags in the neighborough.

I think this is a potential key advantage.  If the costs of transacting in bitcoin can be brought down below 1% then it beats most ATM foreign exchange fees.  Potentially lower international payment fees along with no chargebacks are two of bitcoins obvious advantages over currenty payment systems.

I agree aso and Grand, more numbers in the article would be better and having the cell phone (for 2FA if not your wallet) be the center of your financail life is probably not too wise.

Read this blog article. The Bitcoin usage by tourists visiting Greece has been increased very much over the last months. Good development.

You do not have to keep your whole stash on your mobile wallet.  ;) You could re-charge it from any online wallet provider not connected to your wallet.

I never keep more than 25% of my whole stash online anyways... it's safely tucked away on paper wallets and cold storage.

It's just a extra option, if you become a victim of theft {You could easily replace a phone or use your partners phone and continue as normal} It also buy you some time to

sweep the address connected to your phone, before they figured it out.  ;D
