Title: Good miner for experimentation?
Post by: K210 on August 14, 2015, 09:48:48 AM
What would be a good miner if i just want to get the feel of mining without expecting to make my money back?. I already have a 4GHs stick miner and want to upgrade.

I found a second hand Antminer S1 great to learn on and do some real mining. Won't make money but stands alone not needing a PC connected. The look & feel is the same as all the other Antminer products if you decide to progress. They are very cheap on ebay and will probably hold their current very low value.

If you look through the market place under goods and computer hardware there is a guy selling s1's with a power supply. I think he has a deal two s1 and power supply for 50 bucks plus shipping not a bad deal.

Better yet here is the link. And it was 30 for the pair not a bad deal. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1145232.0

What is your electricity rate?  This will tell us a lot.

I personally judge miner to recommend a lot on this one varible.   Tells me if you have a chance at ROI or should just do a fun miner.

Imho, the best choice would be ANY old gear you can pick up really cheap. Electric cost per KW hour will be the single largest factor in determining whether you will ever ROI. Newer gear far less likely to do so.

Better to spend a little upfront to see if mining will be profitable for you rather than blowing a big wad on newer gear only to discover it's not.

I don't know if always true on old gear.  There is some that it costs more then you will make.

So old or new ROI is not guaranteed.  It really is based on a lot of individual variables.

I guess it could always be true only if you had free electricity heh.

I did not think about those with "Free" electricity.  It seems a lot of those are mom/day or someone else footing the bill.  It is never truly free.

Only thing close I have had was student housing.  Each apartment max they could would charge was 25 extra per month to each roommate (4 in most cases).  I did not mine there though.  Really did not want to have one in my room, or be the jerk who makes roommates pay more.

Now I am set up with more electricity then I will ever use for miners.

Here we have Hydro. Its so dirty cheap its often cheaper to just include it with rent than run individual counters in apartments. So it is truly free. Of course you only have a few breakers to put miners on but. :)

If you want to get technical the Hydro is run by the Government. So its up to the gov to produce enough electricity for all the demand. In one way the bill could be shouldered by the government. Or The apartment owner. Who pays the 0.038$+/kWh.

Mind if I ask where you are getting that electricity rate?   Before or after taxes/fees?

That would be hard to beat that price.

Look like base price went up from 0.051C$ to 0.056C$ and 30kWh+ to 8.6 up from 6.X not sure if its a summer thing. But whatever at worse this become between 0.04$/kWh and 6.X~ cents per kWh for residential rate. Its before taxes, so add some %. I don't know if both TPS and TVQ taxes apply, if yes it would be 15%.

Not exactly China cheap but still very cheap.

Thank you for sharing! That is hard to beat for sure.  Reading it if you go over "beyond 50 kilowatts (kW)" does it jump up a ton?

Still a heck of a deal for first bit of electricity.  Thanks again for sharing.

I don't know. Its 50kW not 50kWh so 50kW would be like 90 Antminer S5? I'm not sure you should be running that much into a single house or apartment anyways. And i'm guessing if you were running something industrial level you would be able to get some kind of industrial deal at home, maybe.

Also 3$ or 6$ per kW over 50kW can't be per day.

For industrial electricity service i'm surprised by how insanely cheap it is.
http://www.hydroquebec.com/affaires/tarifs-et-facture/tarification/tarifs-affaires-electricite/tarif-m/

210 000 premiers kilowattheures (kWh) : 4,87 ¢/kWh
Reste de l'énergie consommée : 3,63 ¢/kWh

Which means first 210k kWh are 0.0375$/kWh
Then it drop to 0.028$/kWh

Definitively china level or better. Now it make more sense as to why big building's electricity is so dirt cheap. I guess mining wise i lucked out by being born in Québec ^_^"
