Title: 50BTC overtakes deepbit?
Post by: Shadow383 on October 05, 2012, 12:41:36 PM
As of right now:

50BTC: 3826Gh/s
Deepbit: 3316Gh/s

I know deepbit's hashrate has been down a bit due to attacks and the like, but have they finally been overtaken?

Current hashrate is not representative. Let's have a look at 2016-blocks statistics: http://blockorigin.pfoe.be/top.php

the most accurate method to know who is the strongest miner or pool is to have an overview of all generated block rewards and their assigned addresses. if a pool has several block reward addresses it should be known which address is assigned to which pool. in case of unassigned addresses this addresses have to be counted as one solo miner because this could be the case also if it is not the case in reality.

I like the fact that 12.15% is unknown - i.e. blocks found not from the BIG pools but individuals etc...

um in reality
botnets, private pools and solo miners - most likely in that order

Yea I'm about to dump Deepbit, they have been failing terribly the last few weeks.

They've still not caught up over the 2016 block window, but I've checked a few more times over the past few days and 50BTC has been consistently reporting 2-400Gh/s more than Deepbit.

Even averaged over the last week, 50BTC.com could be behind DeepBit. It's hard to be certain since they publish no stats at all, and a hashrate can't be definitively calculated from blocks per week. There's no way to check that their published pool hashrate is correct.

+1.
If you look at the hashrate distribution graph on bitcoinwatch.com, you will see it's measured by the amount of blocks found by those pools, not the actual hashrate.

No, the most accurate method is to compare the number of hashes submitted over a the same period of time.

You were suggesting a method to determine the "strongest pool". The OP was about hashrates. Luck was not mentioned in the OP or your post.

If you want to measure luck, there are a number of options measuring slightly different things (depending on your definition of "luck"):

1. Average shares per round. > 1 is bad luck, < 1 is good luck.
2. Take the log of [ (pool rounds solved / network rounds solved) * (pool hashrate / network hashrate) ] for a given period of time. < 0 is bad luck, > 0 is good luck.
3. Negative binomial CDF applied to total shares for a certain number of rounds. < 0.05 is significantly bad luck, > 0.95 is significantly good luck.
4. Poisson CDF applied to number of rounds solved in a given period of time. < 0.05 is significantly bad luck, > 0.95 is significantly good luck.

There are other measurements (I can think of one other) but those are my favourites.

So yes, deepbit is officially no longer the largest pool now it would seem  :D
Whether it'll recover or not I guess is open to speculation - If you check out the speed history on BTCGuild they're closing in fast.
