Title: What is the best client version so far? Post by: johnyj on October 05, 2012, 08:39:37 PM I've never tried those new clients, always used 0.3.24, is there a best version when it comes to download blockchain speed and with less transaction fee?
Title: Re: What is the best client version so far? Post by: Grix on October 05, 2012, 09:18:33 PM The newest? I haven't noticed anything but advantages with every new version, and older versions have severe problems such as DDoS vulnerabilities.
Title: Re: What is the best client version so far? Post by: MysteryMiner on October 05, 2012, 09:45:10 PM For me it is 0.3.21
Pros: + No forced transaction fees for tx over 0.01 + Nice looking GUI + CPU and room heating feature a.k.a CPU mining is still there Cons: - rare DoS vulnerability - rare bugs causing application to hang - longer initial blockchain download Using 0.4.1 right now but it sucks, it forces to add tx fee when sending new coins. Tx fee are bad when you are playing satoshi dice. Title: Re: What is the best client version so far? Post by: betatest512 on October 06, 2012, 07:41:04 AM 0.7
Title: Re: What is the best client version so far? Post by: SistaS0uljah on October 09, 2012, 08:47:29 PM For me it is 0.3.21 Does that version have the wallet encryption feature? If not, how do you encrypt your wallet? And why in the world would you need the CPU Mining option? How many decades do you expect to wait to mine 0.00000001 BTC with CPU hashing power? ???Pros: + No forced transaction fees for tx over 0.01 + Nice looking GUI + CPU and room heating feature a.k.a CPU mining is still there Cons: - rare DoS vulnerability - rare bugs causing application to hang - longer initial blockchain download Using 0.4.1 right now but it sucks, it forces to add tx fee when sending new coins. Just not accessible through the GUI.

I can't get it running trough bitcoin.conf since 0.5.0Title: Re: What is the best client version so far? So don't send new coins? Why use 0.4.1 instead of 0.4.7 or 0.4.8rc4?Tx fee are bad when you are playing satoshi dice. Well, that's your own fault for participating in a DDoS against Bitcoin.Title: Re: What is the best client version so far? Post by: nobbynobbynoob on October 20, 2012, 11:12:26 PM It does not have wallet encryption feature. And the feature of later versions are largely useless because the malware can easily intercept the passphrase protecting wallet. There are other benefits to wallet encryption. If perchance my USB-stick backup finds itself mislaid, I could be glad my wallet's encrypted. (TrueCrypt does the job though.) If one is truly paranoid about being keylogged one could input the passphrase using a virtual keyboard (Windows, Kaspersky...). Now the malware needs to be wallet-stealing, keylogging and screendumping. Oh, and not intercepted by AV or firewall. Still, I wouldn't keep >>BTC1.000 in a live wallet unless I had at least some intentions of actively using those funds imminently. Title: Re: What is the best client version so far? Post by: MysteryMiner on October 21, 2012, 11:06:30 PM Quote Don't forget the very easy netsplit exploit and who knows how many other unnoted vulnerabilities due to non-maintenance... None actually does this exploit right now because of no profit from it and the lulz will be minimal too. Non use actually makes a little bit safer, none is looking for new vulnerabilities if he is not specifically targeting one computer or one person. But I consider this a security-trough-obscurity and I think it is a bad practice!Quote Well, that's your own fault for participating in a DDoS against Bitcoin. The people who have written automatic scripts that play using Martingale system with very small starting bets like 0.001 are the ddosers! And they are losers also! I started to play Satoshi Dice with approx 4 bitcoins from spare wallet, I have won 3 digit number of bitcoins! With these coins I have purchased all necessary top-end components for my new desktop computer (except HD7970 crossfire and PSU that I already owned)! I will not tell how much it cost to me or how much bitcoins I won using Satoshi Dice because none will believe. How much for me this gamble for new computer cost in transaction fees? Probably slightly less than 1BTC. I will calculate this exact number in spare time for my own reference. Are someone willing to get almost 1BTC extra if all they need to do is install different Bitcoin version without forced tx fees? |
