Title: I found a case full of graphic cards, check this out!
Post by: yrtrnc on October 05, 2012, 08:41:43 PM
 ;D

I came across a case of graphic cards today, I think there are about 50 pcs.

http://s5.postimage.org/lv2ckhovr/IMG_20121005_123057.jpg

http://s5.postimage.org/zft4jm4on/IMG_20121005_123209.jpg

First thing that came to mind was MINNING !

So is it possible to connect these all together and mine with them?

How many Mh would I get?  :P

Does anyone know what I would need, is it even possible?

It's not even on the radar: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison#Nvidia
which means they're no good for mining.

AGP?

well, you can ebay the whole thing for a few bucks.

Short answer: No

Long answer: Those look like Nvidia 5700s, which are too old to mine on. Also, its an AGP card, and I don't know of any motherboard with more than 1 AGP port.

You're best bet would be to sell them on ebay, maybe 200 for the whole box?

A bit hyperbolic but yeah. What you've got there is a case of Nvidia Geforce fx5700LE AGP 8x 256MB graphics cards - or in layman's terms "a crappier video card than what comes stock with a Dell laptop."

If it mines at all (which it probably won't) it won't push out enough hashrate to be worth the power or the time spent setting it up. Oh and they ebay for $15-$30 each, though I'd imagine there's not a huge target market for old AGP 8x cards so it would probably take ages to sell them all off.

Sorry!

I'm afraid they are correct. Modern motherboards are rarely found with an AGP port, so your market will be people with an older PC looking for a crappy video card.

You might get $30 apiece on ebay, if you are very patient.

Ah man, there's me thinking I was gonna push up the difficulty a bit  ;D

Ebay it is!!

256 MB is selling for 30 bucks, these are 512 MB, not bad..

Mining on Nvidia requires 8xxx card or newer. a 5xxx card won't cut it by a long shot.

Its not because its being offered for 30 that its worth 30. Its only worth 30 bucks if anyone pays that for it.
Did you go to school with usagi? :)

I dont think you will sell (m)any at that price, but good luck trying.

10 years from now a guy will post something like:

I found a case full of cards. It's written [you choose : bAsic, Avalon or BitForce] on it. Can I mine bitcoins with them?

Dumpster diving out back of a pc shop that had a cleanout?

seriously they are old tech, the only use for them will be people with old pcs whose gfx card fails and they wont upgrade to a new system.
If you want to get an idea of the real value, start an auction on ebay at $2 and see where it sells ;)
The value is in what someone will pay for it, not what someone wants to get for it :)

Yeah, I guess! Anyone offering any BTC :)

I found them in an old warehouse we rented. Ask the owner, he had no idea, said they were junk.

So I thought I'd put them to good use.

Someone must have spent alot of money on these at the time they were good for mining. ;D

If it mines at all (which it probably won't)...

If they're all identical to the card in the closeup, they won't. 5-series nVidia cards don't do CUDA; that wasn't available until the 8-series.

Sick find. If it were me, I'd try to find an office or school or something with old machines, stick the cards in those machines, and sell the machines. I once had a library give me a dozen old pentium II 400mhz boxes, all I had to do was haul them off and they were free. Nice find.

They are very old cards and they are AGP. Since they are so old, and since probably buying them today is not easy, probably you can sell them for a nice profit, maybe someone has a old computer and need it  :)

Now now, boards like that go for about $4.10/lb if you recycle them. The landfill processing center wouldn't let those fall into the actual fill.  ;D

Remember when looking to value via ebay to always look at 'completed listings'. Look at what people paid for them, not what people are asking.

I have an old GeForce 8800 GTX card if anyone wants to give me any bitcoin for it. It's a monster, would cost a lot to ship. It's really heavy, like a large brick, with a large fan and heavy-duty cooling.

I've got an old computer that needs a new AGP card (the old one fried) so maybe I could do a straight trade.

I think this GeForce 8800 was barely used. I got it with another card, the guy just threw it in for nothing.

As shipping would cost you alot, you might just want to sell your card locally.

As for the AGP card, I can do you a good price for 2.5 BTC shipped, what do you think?

Their 40 bucks on eBay, and thats the ceapest Ive found.

NASA, up until recently, has been buying up old 386 hardware on the sly in order to maintian their legacy control computers, mostly in the shuttles.  The reason that they were necessary was because the old & slow cpu's were much more tolerant to ionizing radiation making into the computer case, and thus did not require nearly as much shielding as a more recent cpu arch.  For similar reasons, the USMC had 486 machines in hardened cases up until around 1995.  These thing s are worth something to someone, if only a enterprise business in Africa.

Here's an opinion on these cards from eight years ago:

the fx series of cards from nvidia had some issues with pixel shaders. the le is also the slow version of the 5700, 5700ultra. the fastest version, the 5700ultra is showing its age and i would say thr minimum card to upgrade to right now is the 6600gt(agp) on newegg.com

There was a guy able to sell two similar cards buy it now for $25 with free shipping, but it may take forever to dispose of them if you ask that much. I can get better freecycled AGP cards all day long, this is the kind of video card you will find in "free computer tower on curb" ads.

True, but bit-rot can and does occur on earth but around once per year. For clustered memory perhaps more.

Hey I have really insanely good luck selling agp cards on craigslist.  Just poke around until you find a want ad for agp card or somebody looking to upgrade their old system, then make them a really good offer like $5-10 per card.  Seems like I sell 2/3 agp cards every couple weeks (and I never buy them) which isn't shabby.
