Australia has already ruled Bitcoin as a currency. Honduras is using blockchain technology as a land claim registry. China (I think) was/still is using Bitcoin as an investment. In Liberland, Bitcoin might even be the official currency. Bitcoin is seeing usage from governments already.

Now it is only Liberland i think, first step has been done for btc to be a money in EU,but European Comission is very slow in legislation. Finally it will come.I dont know it will be positive or negative,if will be accepted like a money exchanges will have to get very costly financial licences, but btc will be recognised like a legal currency

Utah and New Hampshire are starting to explore the idea of accepting BTC for state taxes. Ultimately though it'll be converted to USD so it won't be much different than paying by a debit card. All the same it's a pretty berserk thought for those who've been around since the earliest days.

My prediction: the concept of a "country" will be obsolete by the time bitcoin gains majority acceptance in any of the regions that were once considered as such.

My prediction is the concept of a country will never be obsolete, it is something that has withstood the test of time and isn't just going to vanish anytime soon.
i hope so ...

As you can see in this scheme (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nxbKuDItuKWVeQ8zqWgCBBqOxpyZ7CsfOz4gpwGgjCk/edit#gid=305451342) (sheet 2), the highest density of venues accepting Bitcoin are in Tampa and Kansas City, both USA.
In general, USA also has the highest number of users and venues on all territory.
Despite intuition, poor countries are not the first users that will gain access.
Poor countries have problems in buying a smartphone or a pc.
Other factors are more important, like tech savvy percent of population in example (that's why US is on top, together with Europe and other country with good income and instruction).
But I think that there will not be a real "first nation" adopting Bitcoin.
It will be a slow and steady adoption together in USA and Europe first probably, and following other countries like Argentina, Brasil, Mexico, countries that are not too poor but not rich either, and that have problems with their currency. The ones that are at high inflation but where population CAN actually buy a pc or a smartphone without collapsing.
A good case to examine is Greece: it's in Europe, it's not too poor, but despite this Bitcoin adoption in there is very very low. I think this is due exactly to poor pc penetration in the country: people are afraid of this "computer money" they can't understand, so they need more bashing before go and learn what Bitcoin really is.

It's funny to see hopes and dreams here, of people dreaming about large countries with strong economy accepting bitcoin. The truth couldn't be more different,
because the first countries that will embrace bitcoin (if there even is to be ones) will be the most troublesome ones, the ones that failed with fiat.

I believe that we shouldn't even focus on countries, but rather at individuals, because countries drag along a trail of rules and obstacles with them, individuals do not,
and that is the true power of decentralization, and bitcoin with it at it's core.

Well the truth is that no country needs to accept Bitcoin for Bitcoin to succeed. All that they need to do is not ban it. Bitcoin doesn't need to become national currency, Bitcoin only needs to be a currency on the Internet.

As Andreas Antonopoulos has said, Internet finally has its currency, some 20 years later and together, Internet and Bitcoin are unstoppable. Internet is the only country that Bitcoin needs in my opinion.

I hope no country accepts Bitcoin as an official currency. Countries and government better stay put and avoid talking about, having opinions about or even trying to regulate something that can't be regulated... They shouldn't say yes or no to Bitcoin. They should say nothing at all...

My prediction: the concept of a "country" will be obsolete by the time bitcoin gains majority acceptance in any of the regions that were once considered as such.

That is a nice theory/concept :)

I completely agree, they can't ban us, just like they can't ban the Internet, especially in the long run. But it would still cause us many unpleasant things in the short run. Confidence, price, everything would plummet. So the best is that they leave us alone. They don't need to accept us as currency but please don't ban us either! :)

Who woulda thought  that designing a decentralized, permissionless blockchain would have ended up creating something with no centralized point of attack and no points to coerce?
Amazing.

The Greeks are not that known for technological innovation (at least the modern day Greeks). So I don't think that Greece will be among the early adopters. In my opinion, some of the smaller nations in the Europe and Pacific (such as Guernsey, Alderney, Lichtentstein, Vatican, Nauru, Tuvalu.etc) might be the first ones.

Not a chance, Greece is too worried about keeping themselves in good favor with Germany and will do nothing to harm that.

Parliamentary elections are scheduled for Greece in two months time. A lot will depend on who will win these elections. If the establishment parties win, then they will stick with Euro. On the other hand, if the radicals win, then they will bring back the Drachma (or replace the Euro with Ruble). In any case, there is zero chance of Bitcoin becoming the national currency.

If I was actually going to answer this question within it's bounds ( ;D), I would choose Iceland.

  • Large IT industry (skills and infrastructure to support)
  • Small population (~ 300, 000)
  • Vulnerable national currency
  • Capital controls
  • Liberal mindset
  • Economic malaise

There are many economy experts in government structure, which I guess they wont let their country accept bitcoin since the government wont get any profit from that. But if they do, then I guess they have plans behind that. Anyway Australia has bigger chance to become the first country that accept bitcoin imo.

Calm down. The only thing that's happened in Australia so far is that the tax department overreacted (double GST) then the senate recommended a change which is rather more in the opposite direction. It remains to be seen how the govt will ratify this, and still manage to screw up bitcoin companies.

Yeah I guess you have a point there... Bitcoins volatile market price really is killing Bitcoin in general. If it stays around this $230-$240 price range for more than 6 - 8 months or so we might see an increase in adoption due to a new found secured price in it... But I doubt that will happen anytime soon since there are so many issues Bitcoin has to solve.

there are more issues regarding Greece that need to be solved, being part of the EU makes it somewhat dependand of the euro, they can opt out, but having strong allies in trade makes life so much easier than trying to get out of the hole themselves. They might starting to adapt bitcoin as a side coin, to grow stronger and when the EU has helped them out of their personal crisis have a basis to step out of the whole thing.

Greece will not be the first country to take on bitcoin as their currency, it is still a country and has it's  own identity, with their own pride, a global currency will take away part of that identity, a countries own currency is something that builds patriotism and defines a country for most people.

My vote is for USA.
Technical things will be awarded first in USA. BitLicense is the first example for regulating bitcoin related things get involved with government. We should not expect a government will announce bitcoin as another national currency. We may expect government will not interfere even we get our salary in bitcoin.

Possibly China seeing as though they have the largest % of miners in the world. Maybe their government would be too strict to allow it though.

Instead of thinking which country will accept bitcoin, the more likely scenario is that a country will likely create their own crypto-currency.

I don't think a government is simply going to let people create their own legal tender. But then again, Osbourne has expressed interest in observing the impact of such an event happening.

Still, I think governance and regulation is still needed, and at the moment its still very much unclear how that will fit in around the Sterling which is actually very strong.

USA would be the country will encourage bitcoin very soon. Compared to India, in america the leaders will think from the view of common man. So, they will let bitcoin grow like it deserve by it's nature. Financial regulations are worst in India, so definitely we can not expect India any positive progress with regarding to bitcoin.

I dont understated why only 4 countries that are far from adopting Bitcoin are set to vote on.  Result is clear and almost everyone votes elsewhere.

You may be right. But I too think that USA will be first one to come out to adopt bitcoin.

witch country do you thing will be the first who will accept bitcoin official money as payment?

I think China because AFAIK China's bitcoin market really affect bitcoin's value worldwide.
So there's no doubt that bitcoin will be accept by China. Once China really make it happen, I'm sure bitcoin will raise once again

I think US will be the first country to accept bitcoin. However, there will be lot of regulations for the exchange/taxation etc. The bitlicense in NY is just a beginning.

No I do not think so. I will be surprise even if China were to be the one of the many countries eventually accepting bitcoin.

they do it for the profit only, so i doubt they even care about bitcoin itself, mostly converting every earning in cny, i can bet my ass that from the 2k+ coins they are producing, at least 2k are dumped, they are the big dumper out there

I dont think too many will adopt it officially until people stop cashing out bitcoin and treating it like an investment, another major issue is just people who are plain ignorant to bitcoin and those who believe whatever they are told. Whenever I run into anyone who has heard of bitcoin I always get told that I should sell all my bitcoin because bitcoin is "going away" I ask them how that is going to happen and they never have an answer but apparently on the local news that is all they are told about it.

I then go out of my way to correct the ignorant. It makes my eye twitch....

Doubt any of the countries will openly use Bitcoin as legal tender, if it ever happens at all. The truth is that the random tiny ass countries that are spawned over contested land might try something like this simply for publicity - but I can't see why a country would bother shifting to Bitcoin when its entire economy and markets are designed around its currency. It would need new regulation alongside new awareness (majority of people don't know anything about it) which is too much work for a government.

Finally it will come.I dont know it will be positive or negative,if will be accepted like a money exchanges will have to get very costly financial licences, but btc will be recognised like a legal currency

after seeing this quote i think european countrys are accepting bitcoins but asian countrys are still far nowhere, in india still they are confusion in bitcoin

Internet is the only country that Bitcoin needs in my opinion.

nice thought, to see the internet as the country of bitcoin. makes sense that bitcoin does not need any other instance than that.
