I think it's safe to say that Bitmain won't be able to deliver the S7 during this cycle, and the exchange rate remains low so I'd say a small change is likely. Which has been the case lately anyway, I mean the last 5% change was nearly 5 months ago.

Sure would be nice if we do get a negative this week. Last week was not horrible but i really like 2 percent or less.  But at least not a crazy big number.

Price seems to be hanging around 230 for a while now.  Hopefully we can get a little higher on it during this period.

With all the hype around Bitmain's new chip, the S7, and even the S5+ I don't think negative is in our near future.  I'm hoping to see another <%5 positive move at the worst.

Hopefully we can get a little higher on it during this period.

Only if the XT nonsense gets resolved somehow. Which it probably won't anytime soon.

XT I think will be there for a while sadly.  I don't think there is a chance it takes enough to become the main coin.   It is sad they even have it as it's just hurting btc in my mind.

I think biggest thing is still the flash crash.  That took a LOT of money of people buying up.   Normally that amount spent to buy would not happen in such a little time.

It would have taken some other major news to cause that flash crash and assuming it was FUD instilled by XT isint much of a stretch.

XT is definitively going at this the wrong way.

I wouldn't say it's the wrong way, it's how Bitcoin is supposed to work - consensus decides. The sad part is that we got to that point. There's been talk about block size for months if not years and if the problem doesn't get solved by the "official" devs then sooner or later someone would attempt a fork like that.

Also makes you wonder if Bitcoin 2.0 stuff (sidechains et al) has any chance of ever happening in a climate like this.

I don't have any problem with the block size code. Its all the other shifty code unrelated to it that they perhaps maliciously implemented. Like the IP blacklist code.

I don't think that's in there. Some click-bait "news" sites may have spread some rumors as far as I've seen.

Here is the commit i am referring to;
https://github.com/bitcoinxt/bitcoinxt/commit/73c9efe74c5cc8faea9c2b2c785a2f5b68aa4c23

Properly used, it could be of some use, albeit not necessary, but this add centralized authority to a decentralized body, as i understand it. At any rate there's better ways of doing this.

Very early in the week but here is bitwisdom:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    54,256,630,328
Estimated Next Difficulty:    54,370,133,238 (+0.21%)
Adjust time:    After 2004 Blocks, About 14.1 days
Hashrate(?):    408,339,410 GH/s

And price is still around 230 no huge moves.

The above is what I think is from a "frozen" bitcoinwisdom. I've been seeing that for almost a day now, so it's really a meaningless number. It's also way too early to matter, but just thought I'd mention it.

Not sure what causes it but I have seen it happen before a while back.   I think it was in the day's that it took for it to work again.

Not sure if it will take day's again.  Hopefully not but we will see.

this site is up

http://www.bitcoincharts.com/

Blocks   371161
Total BTC   14.529M

Difficulty   54256630328
Estimated   54285518943 in 1799 blks

Network total   359312.331 Thash/s
Blocks/hour   5.55 / 649 s

picks will open in 83 blocks.

in the year we have done this  (hard to believe these threads have been running for a year)  bitcoinwisdom  went down 1 diff adjustment period for 8 or 9 days.

For now  this site keeps track

the convert to percent       EST/diff    or 54285518942/54256630328 =   1.000532 - 1 =   0.000532  x 100 =   (+0.0532%)

Intuitively  (+0.0532%)    makes sense    since the estimate of 54285518943  is only a tiny bit more then 54256630328.

Ie last 24 blocks should be   4 hours to give a zero   if they were  3.3 hours  they give a higher jump.

I am not inclined to figure it out.

While it's not another "crash" BTC price is now slightly above $220. Looks like a slow gradual decline from the $230 it "recovered" to after the mini-crash early last week.

It's not good with difficulty increasing, even if slowly, and BTC price falling, also slowly.

This is fairly depressing.

Crashing and burning... down 1000 points at the open... major players (Goldman, Apple, Merck, etc) getting hammered (losses of more than 10% per share).

BTC price is still around the $220 mark.  I'm going to go with another positive difficulty increase.  I'd like +3.51 to +3.75 please.

+3.76% to +4.00% for me please.

I wonder if summer coming to an end is having an impact on the rising difficulty, also.  It's going to be interesting to watch these next few changes and see what happens to the price.  So many things in play, stock market, new hardware, XT... pretty soon the 2016 halving will start to really impact all of this as well.  Exciting times!

Exciting times indeed :).  I'd love for a few difficulty decreases or a nice boost in BTC price (just so I can keep my S3s plugged in), but I don't see the former happening any time soon, and the latter would likely only exacerbate the rising difficulty.

thank you for putting me with my usual choice!

i guess they already have the s7... so no negative atm, or maybe we have some badluck in finding blocks and lowering the diff

Price continues to drop, going to be time to start buying coins soon.  Was ~$220 when I posted my pick this morning, now closing in on ~$213.  Looks like we'll see below $200 today if this keeps up.  If it gets too low we're likely to see some miners shut off, don't know if that would be enough to move difficulty down, though.

Something's gotta give. Either the price will bounce back or the diff will retreat, maybe next cycle. I think there is a lot of old gear still on the network that will be very miserable very soon if this exchange rate continues.

While I would like to think that "something has to give", I am reminded of a saying related to the stock market:

'The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.'

I think the same is true of Bitcoin and it's price. There's nothing that says miners MUST make money. After all, if it's to be a currency, why must Bitcoin have a fiat value that makes sense?

Time to buy, which I just did (again).

I know that I'm paranoid, but it does seem interesting that BTC price tanks right around the the time that more efficient hardware (e.g. the S7) is tantalizingly around the corner.

Of course it's unlikely that Bitmain could manipulate the price like this. Could just be money moving out of BTC to the now cheaper equity market since stocks are down.

The best thing for miners to hope for is a major price recovery soon. If BTC recovers before the S7 is announced, it could be a double win for miners. Better purchasing power for higher efficiently hardware, and theoretically some additional competition in the form of older hardware whose profitability could be lifted by higher BTC prices might drive down the S7 price (we can but dream).

So now is the time for BTC to rise. Time to start sacrificing chickens, or whatever works for you ;-)

I think miners who don't make money would stop being miners thus reducing difficulty and/or reducing the supply of fresh coins. That's the "benefit" of having large mining farms, those certainly can't afford to run at a loss. Home miners can probably last a bit longer.

I don't care much either way. Most of my gear is paid off and some of it still has 3-4 months of prepaid hosting... if it doesn't get sorted out by then I'll just HODL ;D

There are a WHOLE bunch of A1 gear somewhere in the world.  We will see how cheap their electricity really is.

The low price of BTC and looking at big difficulty changes will kill mining.  Between that flash crash, and XT it's just a crappy time.  The flash crash I think scared many.  And now XT is pretty much everywhere which brings unknown to investors, investors don't like unknown.  So something will give just don't know what it will be.

The Black Monday in China led towards strong corrections marketwise globally
Oddly enough due to the China connection it looks like some recoil leverage affected Bitcoin as well as we tread near the low $200 ranges.
Still not near the mtgox collapse levels but things have changed since then.

(While I think it will be near negative this round its very early in the cycle and someone left a tempting spot to occupy)

Going to occupy the +1.76-2.00% range
Lets see how it goes

Price is over 220 again.  Nice to have a little was above 200.   Hopefully 250 by next few changes.

200 is just pretty hard to keep mining myself at.  If that became the norm I would have to find a new place for my older gear, I could still host new gear.

I'm looking foward to winter.  I will be able to turn off a few fan's and use the cold air.   Not a huge savings but still some savingss.

I chances are will leave 2 big fan's on and exhaust fan, that and winter I should be set.   I am honestly surprised I made it through summer mining.  But happy I did it.

It seems like the price rebound may stick this time, which doesn't bode well for a decreasing difficulty adjustment anywhere in the near future. Sigh  :(

I was really hoping to see some slowdown before the S7 comes to fruition, but the S5+ and Bitfury chips aren't letting that happen.

+4.26 to +4.50% for me please.

I think the low btc price saves us from a big jump this time... With the new hardware around, the diff increase just can't stay this low.

Well good for us miners.

http://nextdifficulty.com/ is showing a little less on change, antpool luck could have some to do with it though:
Conservative: 2.3% 3% Continous: 5.1 %

Price is around 222 so not horrible there.

We really don't know what they are doing with S5+ either if it was one batch to get rid of chips or not.  They have managed to get a good amount of hash out of S5+'s.

And whenever they do go to new chip they no doubt will be pumping them out fast.  I'm afraid our day's of 2 percent jumps might be over for a bit.

Lots can happen in the next 8 days, but I don't think it going negative is likely.

I'm afraid our day's of 2 percent jumps might be over for a bit.

Probably, but I'd be surprised if the jumps are significantly higher. If diff. increases by 3% the rest of the year, that would be an increase of roughly 90PH between now and 2016.

By comparison, the network hashrate is about 100 PH higher since the start of the year (average diff. jump of under 2%), which is when Bitmain began sales of the S5. And a good chunk of that came from Bitfury and other manufacturers.

The slow growth this year also means that a significant amount of the network hashrate is likely comprised of hardware that will be at least 2 generations behind (S3 and earlier). Assuming a stable exchange rate, a significant amount of S3-gen. hardware will be forced offline if difficulty increases too fast, just as hardware >1 w/gh went offline over the past 8-10 months or so. This too will be a limiting factor on growth, and S3-gen. hardware is likely still a large chunk of the hashrate out there.

What's more likely is instability in difficulty going forward - I wouldn't be surprised to see, for example, an increase of close to 10% followed by a decrease of 6-7%. (edit: actually, I'd be a little surprised - a 10% increase means 40 PH went online in a 2 week period, allocating 32 PH of that to Bitmain (leaving the 2% 'normal' growth), that would mean 16,000 hypothetical 2TH S7's shipped in a single difficulty period, variance aside).

The exchange rate is the most important variable with respect to difficulty right now, I think, and all this assumes a constant exchange rate.

I am happy to see it back.   I don't think this week will be one of our better one as far as difficulty.

Someone is doing something I think as far as making gear.  Could be anything from a S5 + batch, S7 batch, unknown miner.  Or even people pulling miners out as summer is close to over.  I expect winter miners to give us a bump at some point.

We have some time I would really like to see it go down to around 3 I could settle for that.  I just really don't want 4-5 changes.

I'm especially afraid no big announcement and still a bump of around 4 right now.  Makes me wonder what's going on.

I'll take 0.51-0.75.

Side note - I was looking at Litecoin diff. and price performance around the recent halving (and prior to it).

It looks like the price settled in around $1.40-50 in April-May after a long decline, with difficulty fairly stable, bouncing around 40k. Then things started going crazy as the halving was approaching, and price and diff. increased.

Now, price is (somewhat) stable around $2.80-90, and difficulty is dropping, right back to around 40k (a little below). If this equilibrium holds, that will mean a wash for long term miners as the price doubled and difficulty remained roughly the same. Obviously bitcoin is a different animal, but interesting nevertheless.

That is interesting to keep in mind when bitcoin halving rolls around.  Biggest difference is ASIC technologies are ever advancing for SHA256, and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight for hashrate growth.  At some point though the price will need to support that growth though, but when?

We are a while away from having though.   It is approaching but at least most gear does not factor it in on ROI at this point.

At a point we will be faced with it and I don't know what will happen there.  No one can give a for sure anwser till it happens really.  Will btc price rise where we can keep running?  Will hashrate go down for a point? No one knows.

Energy efficiency is getting better too. Theoretically the price doesn't have to go up as long as difficulty and efficiency remain in balance (and the purchase price to some extent too).

As for halving, LTC has not had any significant progress in ASIC development for quite a while, so either the price had to go up, or the difficulty had to drop or both. It looks like it's the price that's taking care of the halving currently.

It's a good thing in a way I guess. There won't be a massive upgrade that would drive the diff up and bitmain of course priced it to match their near-monopoly position.

I think I'll get a few to test them out but will wait for a price drop before buying more.

The S7 controller appears to be same as S5+.  So they very very easily could throw an S7+ together.

Would not surprise me if we find a S7+ a month or so after.  The body design is the same aswell.

Even for me I find 20 BTC to be high for the amount.  So we can hope they are releasing at a high price.  The could later release coupons or something else.

But I do think the price will have to drop a decent amount before they throw 3 of them together.   Even for Bitmain a 20 BTC machine is something they normally would not do.

Looking at the S7 specs next month when they start poping them out like candy it sure looks like we will see a raise in difficulty. Only thing is if a lot don't go up to it.

But either way we are likely to see a bitmain data center or two fill up with S7's where they sold off S5's as used.  This will likely be the first to come and might be happening now for all we know.

I don't think mining is THAT lucrative. Selling with a fat margin, getting the money upfront, and not having to worry about difficulty/exchange rate/etc - that's where the money is. So yeah, they might test or "test" them a bit but I think with XT and halving looming Bitmain will want to get rid of as many S7s as soon as they can.

Unless you mean Hashnest, which is customer-owned hardware... but I don't think Bitmain will sell S7 on Hashnest before batch 1 is available.

Bitmain sold S5's out of their own data centers, that's why they marked them as used on last batches.  So likely before customer S7's bitmain will fill their own data center's.  We don't have enough info to know how much that is.  So it is not customer sell's really but internal S7's to itself we I think will see first.

I dont see XT as a big deal.  It's a pain as so much talk but I don't see it getting needed market share.

And also when we were theorizing that they were dumping S5's to fit in S5+'s...

It might be possible they were making room for S7's. With their electricity cost i don't know if that would be a good move for them, but who knows. And the S5+'s they sold might of been left over of a batch that was sold privately or after they filled one of their mine with it. But whatever.

I'm hoping there won't be that many S7's too soon. I'm not sure a diff increase would bring forth a BTC price increase with its price being so wobbly.

I'm hoping there won't be that many S7's too soon. I'm not sure a diff increase would bring forth a BTC price increase with its price being so wobbly.

I think it will be a lot but less then we expected.  They released a bigger miner then most thought they would on S7.   Also with 10 PCIe might scare some home miners away that + amount of watts.

I really think they are geared up for a S7+.  It appears controller would work with 3, and they would link together just like S5+.   I think we will hear some home miners grouch about S7.  There is already a thread pushing for a quiet S7 from bitmain.   But I don't expect a quiet or smaller version from bitmain. (Although yes they likely will do another U series with much less power)

when I get the s7 I will lower the sound by 20 db.  I will run it at 3800gh and around 760watts.

I believe this unit will be like the sp20 in that underclock/undervolt will make it heat and sound manageable. plus more efficient.

Hmm. Mhm. Sound likely, i am considering underclocking the S4 that i should receive shortly to see if it help managing the noise. On the S7, undervolting should get even amazingly lower J/GH. 0.2 seem possible if you run it at that speed.

I think the S7+ would be kind of hellish of a monster. In a way it is convenient space wise. But damn a S7+ on a S5+ form factor would mean 3x9+1 = 28 PCI-e connector in one machine ^_^"".

Just crazy.

Speaking from the S5+ it was honestly a good design.  It was an improvement on the S5 by far.  I am interested to see how sales do widespead of machine like this.

I predicted a 2 hashing unit as they normally do, they threw a curve ball and did 3.  Just thinking out loud but it makes not only a S7+ easy.  But a S7 upgrade EXTREMELY easy.  They can send 2 units without controllers as an "upgrade" and all can plug into main controller.  So for those with 240 this could be expanding quickly.

Hmm indeed thats true. It would be easy to upgrade and the controller board clearly has enough slots to support it. The only thing is you would have 3 S7 blades and 3 or 6 S7+ blades.

By that i mean, the S5+ isint exactly 3*S5, since it has different board and performance, more notably, the J/GH was slightly improved. Not an issue but it might annoy OCD people if they mix boards. xD

That would not be fun.  I honestly think we have some machines being made and powered on.

I just hope it does not turn into 5 percent as general difficulty change now.

Looking forward to your review on this.  Nice $100 coupon you got there, and with some psu's laying around that seems like a good fit for you.

I will be interested in how much you can reduce the db levels with underclocking.

Bitcoin Difficulty shows it going down a little:

Bitcoin Difficulty:    54,256,630,328
Estimated Next Difficulty:    56,836,275,848 (+4.75%)
Adjust time:    After 680 Blocks, About 4.5 days
Hashrate(?):    415,963,691 GH/s

Still a pretty big jump though compared to our normal 2.

It does look like it will be over 5% at this pace even three blocks changes the prediction a fair bit still.
Was thinking it would be lower myself but maybe it's a bit seasonal as the hot summer starts to switch into a cooler fall and the electricity costs go down a bit as those air conditioners turn off. (It is mining speculation ^^)
(Also got prediction sniped at 1.76%-2% with valkir but It looks like it won't trigger so no worries)

Its not quite winter though for most.  I know this week I have a few day's still hot, but last week and a half have been mild.

I think this is likely do to new products not winter miners yet.  So we have a few bumps I think and will see a little more normal of 2 percent we were having.  I hope to be wrong on this though.

If we hit a 6 that will be biggest in quite a while.   We can hope price comes later following it.  But I was hoping for another 2 percent week.

Me too, but I think that fall is approaching and miners are coming back online.  And the S7 announcement gets everyone excited.  Time to get as much ROI out of those miners as they can before they get replaced with the next gen stuff.

And it wouldnt be surprised if Bitmain kept a portion of those S7 for their own purpose and is onlining them, replacing older stuff. I just think its a bit early for so many summer miner to be coming back.

Then again there's other private companies who might have finished production of a private batch. Meh.

+6% is pretty nasty.

I am quite confident that Bitmain has already replaced a bunch of S5 hardware with S7 hardware. They sold a bunch on used S5's over the summer, and I'll bet they replaced them with S5+ and S7 hardware. I think the S7 design is well checked out at this time.

The S5+ went to public after we asked for it.  I have no doubt the S5 used batches are (if not already) replaced with S5+ or S7's.   You will see S7 controller looks like it can control 3 modules just like S5+.   So very easy for a data center.

But we knew this it's smart business on their part so can't really fault them for that.  It appears bigger more powerful miners is the new thing.

That will be first in a long time that no one guessed max.  I cant decide if we were all to hopefull, or if machines are starting to kick on.

I fear that if new machines are kicking on this week will not be alone with a new little higher difficulty change.  We could be looking at 5's instead of 2's which will suck if btc remains same price.

We may have 2 big jumps this one and the next or the one after that. Then we level off.

All the big guys will had filled their mines.  And lots of old gear will turn off.

the diff is going to be close to 57  next jump

I see 60 getting past and then like 50 was really tough to pass I think 70 will be hard to pass.

As always past history means nothing when picking the future.

I still wonder if we will get close to 6 by the end of this.  If a few extra gear is made I think it is possible.

With my mining setup I have been able to get rid of my S4's, C1.  Now I just need to sell a Dragon 1.5T and I am pretty much up to current gen and uderclocked which I hope to run through winter and if extremly lucky some of next summer.  Next summer is going to be a stretch on some of them but I can hope.

It's going to be very close to 6 I think at this point.   So double or so around my original guess.

If we get another 6 or so next week I will feel almost safe gear is being put out, as I think it will be done internally first with bitmain.  Or I am all wrong and winter miners are plugging in some more.

Maybe we trickle down under for the last day, or so to get under 5%.  I guess another 5+% move should be expected once the S7's go live, but then it should flatten out for a few adjustments.

Cheers to guessing, lol.

That is so nice of you :).   You should write some of the major companies and tell them about this offer!

I just am ready to skip a week and see the next one.  I want to know if we go back down to 2ish or if 5ish is here to stay.

So were approaching the end of period looking like for sure high 5's.  Not sure if 6 but will be close.

Price is currently 228.  So still hanging around the same amount pretty close.

I can recall those day's very well, but does not mean I want go back to it.   I think at this point 20-30 are not going to happen as total hashrate has raised so much.

I hope we don't get to 7.   But I am really starting to think we have someone turning on some gear 6+ is a lot of hash.

I don't think anyone did.  I am afraid of another one next week to.   I don't know what will happen.

But from picks this week I believe highest was: +4.26% to +4.50% .  So we all guessed lower, didnt see this.  Was eye opening though.

asic builders have huge power in what the total ph is to be.

If I put bit fury , bitmaintech , KNC, avalon,  sfards,  and the other chinese company made the dragons all in one room and forced them to build gear they could 2x the network by jan 1.  easy no questions asked.

since they have all decide to mine they are limiting hash power to others and thus slowing btc growth in general.

SO after doing this since last NOV.  maybe they will flip the switch and put gear out for a while.

As do I, those increases were scary buggers for mining as your gear was out dated in a few months at times at least it was off-set by prices though if they were going up so you could estimate ROI on a mining calculator.
That said it looks like some new hash is coming on and miners will be upgrading their units to S7's in a month or so perhaps their is also some unit testing before shipping as this blip needs to be accounted for somewhere.

But seriously, will we hit 100G before the halving next year?  It's going to be fun to watch what happens as that draws nearer.

I think it's safe to say that Bitmain won't be able to deliver the S7 during this cycle, and the exchange rate remains low so I'd say a small change is likely. Which has been the case lately anyway, I mean the last 5% change was nearly 5 months ago.

I get close to +5.12%

https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty (+5.20%)  very close to my current number

looks like 5+ is in the cards.  Looks really hard to drop to 4.50%  so I think we are getting the carry over

44 blocks to go! So  here is to a 1 hour block or 2 or 3 or so.

I am beginning to think you are the rainman of difficulty :).  Thank you for all the time you spend in these threads.  I truly enjoy watching it through the week.

Hopefully next period is less.  Guess we will see.

It does look like their will be a carry over it's been a while since that happened and predictions will need to move higher the next time around.
Not too many blocks left now just six hours to go this round.

Bitcoin Difficulty:   54,256,630,328
Estimated Next Difficulty:   57,031,826,668 (+5.11%)
Adjust time:   After 39 Blocks, About 6.0 hours

So about 5% huh? I really hope we don't keep that pace, or do wish that the BTC price keep up.

Then again i should knock on wood, its not like its double digit stuff...

*Knock on wood*

100 billion diff, here we come!

But seriously, will we hit 100G before the halving next year?  It's going to be fun to watch what happens as that draws nearer.
next to impossible  long sustained prices needed for it to go above 100

For sure we will hit that diff, then the halving and this will be fun just wait and see  :D

Bitcoinwisdom is famous for overshoot estimates at the start of each period. This will settle down with more incoming blocks.
