Title: About importing password protected private keys- Need help
Post by: xeno2016 on August 24, 2015, 11:09:50 AM
This is what happened and i need some help

I have a new pc in which i had multibit wallet with some bitcoins in it and some issue in the system stopped the working of multibit wallet. I am not even able to reinstall it again.

I had already kept backups of private keys, but the private keys are encrypted with password from multibit.

Where can i import these multibit encrypted private keys  other than multibit wallet.

I need some help at this really fast.

Thank you.

You can use Andreas Shildbach's Bitcoin wallet (Android).[1] After importing, install Electrum[2] in your PC and move those coins to it.

It will be great if you can tell more details about the incident. Multibit developers will be able to resolve this.

I checked android wallet, it has only sweep paper wallets, but i have .key file which is encrypted with password, and i know the password, just want to import this encrypted private key which is  AES256 encrypted.

https://github.com/bitcoin-solutions/multibit/wiki/Export%20and%20limited%20import%20of%20private%20keys

and the issue for not installing multibit got to be with my systems overall installing environment setting had to be changed. That may be the reason, but unsure.

There is a command line for decrypting the password, but don't know how to use it.

Code:
openssl enc -d -p -aes-256-cbc -a -in \<ciphertext file\> -out \<plaintext file\> -pass pass:\<password\>

Are you planning to use this addresses? If not, use Blockchain.info and sweep all Bitcoins to your Electrum wallet.

P.S. Please move this back to Multibit. It is the right section.

I am getting an error decrypting as the file is encrypted and Blockchain.info requires decrypted private key.

Do you have another computer? If yes, copy the files in Mutlibit directory[1] to your new computer(paste folder in same directory) and open Multibit.

Alternatively, you can decrypt it with above command you posted. You will have to install OpenSSL[2].

I don't have another pc at the moment, i will install and use Openssl now, and update you
if all else fails, i will get another system.

Solved it.

Got another system.

Imported the encrypted private key in multibit installed in the system.

Decrypted the private key and exported it without password.

Imported the decrypted private key in blockchain.info

Good to go :)

Glad to know! But I highly depreciate using Blockchain.info as your main wallet. For storing small amounts is okay but it is not all a good wallet, in fact, its a buggy wallet. I recommend you to use an local wallets such as Electrum for PC and Bither or Mycelium or Andreas Schildbach's Bitcoin Wallet or BreadWallet for smartphone.
