Have you guys ever attended any bitcoin meetup? What do you usually discuss about?

Yes. I recently helped organize our first meetup in my city in southern Spain. Since it was only our first meetup we mostly introduced ourselves and got to know everyone's journey into Bitcoin (and crypto in general). The group was small, but very diverse - just like the Bitcoin community.

Never been to an actual meetup but I've been in a skype conference call about bitcoin for many times now. As of this moment, we're planning to hold one on the 15th of September, but I'm not sure whether it will take place or not because some of the prominent members of our group do have some affairs at that time.

I wasn't in a bitcoin meetup yet. But I was once in room 77 in Berlin, chill place and few bitcoin folks there. I wished there were bigger bitcoin meetups/conferences in Germany.

It is not so easy, BTC users are from all the world, how can they meet ? Mostly from USA, by the way  ;D

I've been to a couple of meet ups here in Melbourne. Didn't really talk about anything though because both were for bitcoin documentary launches. I had a good time.

If you don't live in bigger cities like London, Paris, New York, these meet-ups are waste of time in my opinion. You can't have big and quality speakers, so this means nobody will come from the audience.

I have never been in one such event. There are none close to where I live. And I would only wanna go to the major ones anyways.

You can organize a  meetup on meetup.com. But the difficult part is to find a location to host the actually meetup, you may need some money to buy food and drinks and other important stuff for a meetup.

I don't disagree, but they aren't a complete waste of time. Linking up with other Bitcoiners in your area is good for local trading among other things.

Not only have I been to a couple meetup in my area I volunteered to be a speaker at an upcoming Denver meetup and I just joined the new Boulder area meetup.

But I doubt that in my country, the meet ups happen or not. BTW I'm from India.
Don't think that meet ups happen here because in my friend circle, only one person knows about Bitcoin, so it's a long way to go.

Yes, I went to one meetup. It wasn't very interesting, though. There were some people very supportive of BTC in the assistance, but the speaker was much more of a critic. I still think of meetups as a good idea, they're certainly useful, but don't go there as I did only because it's a BTC meetup. Check what will be the subject(s), and who will speak.

No and I don't think I would. Every time adults gather around a common interest things tend to get a bit weird.

I did not, its too much hastle. Bitcoin "live" in internet, we can discuss it and collaborate in internet only :).

I haven't yet because the nearest ones are 6 hrs away by bus and ferry. I believe there was one in my town year or two ago but had dissapointing turn out.
My town has pretentions as a tech hub but it's also got a hippy tradition, so while there are a good number of tech savvy people here they still manage to be anti-technocracy. Microsoft came and opened a hub here a few years ago and wound up shuttering the operation inside 6 months. You can't force tech hub on a place, you just have to find where the hub already is and then go there.
That place is 6 hours away.
That said, I occasionally visit that city. I'm on their mailing list. They have regular monthly meet ups and they always look pretty cool. There is a lot of btc activity and interest there.
I intend to try and attend next time I visit. The bitcoiners I have met in my town are so apathetic, it would be nice to meet some enthusiastic bitcoiners for a change

No, I haven't attended never a meetup. Or to be sincere I have attended one or two but only the few first minutes then I leave those. The reason is very simple. I am able to communicate in written English but not in spoken. So I don't understand almost nothing from someone who spike English. This is the reason of my absence in meetups of any kind in English.

I'm surprised at how many people are against going to meetups. Not every meetup is the same so you can't really generalize and they are usually really flavoured by the region you are in. You make what you want out of it.

Yes I was invited to one a year ago, and it took me 3 hours to get there. I walk in there and 26 pairs of eyes turn to me, looking me up and down. I looked like a typical agent with my short hair, so people checked me out from a distance. That is until Alberto, the guy who invited me walked over and asked me if I was Harry <false name>

When I was identified as a friendly, they pushed a beer into my hand, and we talked until the early morning hours. <Reminder: I had to drive back again>

I ended up, staying over at Alberto's flat and drove back the following day. It was a awesome experience and I just wish I lived closer to all of them. I now have more Bitcoin friends than normal friends. Normal, because most of us Bitcoiners are being seen as abnormal beings. ^heh^

No need to be scared.  ;) You find the most incredible people at these meetups. I have met some of the most creative people I know at some of these meetups and also great contacts to buy and sell Bitcoins. {Not

a lot of them want to sell for some or other reason tho, so I might be onto something}  ;D

I enjoy it most if they invite a speaker and we have a interactive open discussion with the guys and gals within the industry. {Some connect over Skype, but it's still good}

Nothing like sitting back with a couple of Bitcoin mates, sharing the same interests and having a beer or two... ummm or three.... Who is counting?  ::)

Not yet, but will next week. Did plan for my own little meetup in town, posted a date, time and place in the city center, but it seemed there where plans for a more organised meetup by others on the same date, so will go there and meet anyway. It is a great oppurtunity to meet likeminded people, I have attended other non bitcoin related meetings and have always been surprised by the variety of people showing up, always someone you can connect with and always good for business, might sound like a yup now, but I am an artist :)

Not yet but I have planned into attending some of the NYC ones but never ended up going. Is the meeting about scaling Bitcoin open to public or its only for developers? it seems like its going to be one of the most crucial and interesting meetings of Bitcoin of all time. I would like to see Gavin and Greg discuss the different points of view live.

Lots, I've been a very active member in my community, especially with helping other local businesses set up bitcoin as a payment option for their customers. Its been great to watch bitcoin blossom into a much more commonly accepted form of payment.

I've never attended a Bitcoin meetup unfortunately. I wish we have a community here, but there's no crowd in my area that know about Bitcoin.

Yes, I've been to quite a few meet ups and at least a dozen conferences. I've met some of the Bitcoin scammer elite as well as a number of legitimate businessmen. The most interesting person I've met is Bruno (Gleb Gamow, Phineas Gage). He was wearing a pink tutu and barking like a dog when I met him. Andrew Bitcoiner was the most articulate/intelligent scammer I met. The meetups seem to be mostly a forum to pitch business ideas and brainstorm over best ways to increase Bitcoin awareness.

Normally meetups are created and made for specific things that cannot be or cannot are discussed widely in any other place. And rarely those info are spread in internet in the writing form.

There is not intended that you can assist physically in the meetup. There are to many online where you can participate without problems. You can register and with a microphone and headphones you can participate there in which way you want. Talking and discussing in any possible way.

Attended a meetup past tuesday evening, it was a cassual meeting after a short seminar with some presentations, I only had time for the beer afterwards. It was nice to meet new people, but the ones attending were not local, i really hoped to get to know some people from my town to see if we can get bitcoin of the ground locally. It needs more time I think, but I will be patient. The topic was hardly bitcoin related, that was a bit awkward as well, though I did enjoy myself, but not what I hoped for.

Sometimes you will need it, which you could discuss all thing about bitcoin directly with other people. And it would be bit safer for us to do bitcoin transaction in real life, where you could know the real identity of your buyers because you and them always attending bitcoin meetup together.

In the meetup I attended (and helped organize) people talked A LOT about altcoins. It's what's profitable for traders I guess.

I attended a few meetups so far, in Brussels and Ghent. Wish I could do more of them but real life obligations are preventing me from doing so atm.

That situation will change soon though :)

What were the typical turnouts in the meetups you went to? Did a lot of people show up or only a handful? Also, what did the meetups typically consist of? Would a newbie be welcome to participate or would it be over their head? Learn any valuable information or was it more of a social gathering than anything?

Well atleast you could discuss bitcoin even though with only 3 peoples :) I guess those people are your friends.

Usually a meetup begins with a simple conversation with our friends with same hobby or anything else, and time by time it would grow to become a meetup with larger participants.

I have never been but in near future i think to watch livestream if it is any streaming available.

no I never had got a perfect time to visit a bitcoin meetup because when a bitcoin meetup help near my city either its too fa from my place or I don't have time to visit it or someone is with me for them I couldn't go

I haven't as of yet. However, that's due to the fact many that interest me are in different parts of the world to me. Any near me are still a 3/4 hour trip. Living in the countryside I'm very unlikely to find one within less than 2 hours away, and even if it was that close there won't be many there. The only ones which would be worth attending over here, would probably be London. However, that's over 4 hours away from me.

I do aim to attend one though, despite the travel distance. The travelling isn't too big of a deal, I'm sure many other people travel much further than this. However, I'm normally very busy. Either, working my job 5 days a week with very unpredictable and odd hours, with occasional work on the weekends. Also, private work which keeps me working until 2am some nights and waking up at 4am. It's not fun at all. At some point I'll be in the position to lower my workload and use others to do it for me. But, at the present moment in time, that's not a viable option.

There's been a few in Cardiff, but not many numbers due to the population difference. Although, I haven't been to a Bitcoin 'meet up event' I have met others interested in Bitcoin and discussed in length at times.

I'm from India. Here in some social sites I have seen some bitcoin workshop as well as meet ups. But I could not find them before schedule to attend. But planing to do so.

I've attended many in the netherlands, belgium and in london.

How do you get in touch with people for something like that? 

If you post on bitcointalk, there aren't enough people from your local area who will see it. 

If you post on Facebook, there aren't enough people who use Bitcoin who will see it. 

There's a new social media site that I thought was a good idea, uCrypto.co, but hardly anyone has signed up.  And, again, there's no way to promote it because nobody on bitcointalk cares, and nobody who's not on bitcointalk knows what Bitcoin is. 

So what do you do?  Post flyers around town?

I think I will also try to start a group just for communicating online, in case it's not something that requires people to physically gather in one place. 

I don't know anyone in real life that would be interested in coming with me basically because I have never talked about Bitcoin to anyone in real life in a meaningful way, barely mentioned it because let's face it, most people are ready to deal with it, too advanced. So im just not willing to go alone knowing no one.

They actually had a bitcoin convention meeting type of thing here in omaha, Nebraska a few months ago. It was pretty enjoyable if i say so myself.  The area was full mostly of younger folks under 30 i would say. Now this is good news as the Midwest tends to be more conservative than the east or west coast. Now if we can spread this acceptance towards the older folks over 40 it would create more acceptance.
