It is not anywhere "near" Joliet Mall.  Joliet Mall is over 5 miles away to the Northwest. The ATM is closer to both Hollywood Casino (4.2 miles away) and Harrah's Casino (2.7 miles away).

Furthermore, I-55 is over 3.5 miles west of the ATM, while I-80 is less than a mile to the south.

There is no Jefferson Rd. in Joliet.  Perhaps you mean Jefferson St.?

8% fees seem to be too high in order to get any traction. I understand that you are trying to get back the money you invested into the machine, but 8% might be to high. You should lower the fees to 1-2% so more people will actually use it, the point of low trading fees is to get a bigger trading volume. If for example 100 people use the machine with a 2% fee then with 8% it might be 10 and it will take longer to get ROI back.

I'm not the operator of this machine, but I think at 1-2% you hardly cover even running costs.
Market says the fair rate is at 6% now.

With 6% you can't compete with services like coinbase and kraken who charge around 1-2% fees to convert your bitcoin into cash.

Coinbase and kraken never convert to cash. I think those services are not competitors for BTMs.
Bitcoin ATMs are working with cash, which gives more anonymity, requires less effort (go and get bitcoins in 15 sec, compared to sending your docs online and waiting couple of days), in the end you don't need bank account to use bitcoin ATM, however you need one for online exchanges.

I assume BTMs can never operate at the same fees as online services, because they require much more effort to run, not taking into account the initial set up and investment into the machines.

I find this very interesting, & I will follow this closely. I don't live anywhere near Illinois but perhaps other Bitcoin users can share their experience.
