Title: We need more companies with original names. No more Bit-, -coin, or -pay.
Post by: RGBKey on August 27, 2015, 01:55:55 AM
Yes, it's great that we can tell just by looking at your domain that you use bitcoin but we've gotten to the point where people will have some awful name and just add bit or coin to it somewhere and think it's the best thing ever. We're beyond that point now. Off the top of my head, I can think of Kraken. They chose a memorable name, that doesn't involve any part of the word bitcoin. No, they didn't go bankrupt because of it. Add some originality, people.

Yeah, like Mt. Gox! or Silk Road! Wait...they aren't around anymore are they?

Kidding, obviously a name doesn't correlate with business success (unless the name is personally offensive to many people).

Xapo is a cool name.

What others exist? Give it time and you'll see tones of creativity out there. Part of the draw to a bit- or a -coin name is that bitcoin is still so new, there needs to be some brand recognition for these new companies.

well we can't do anything can we? you should redirect this question to future owner of future exchange, but many are lazy and want an easy name, i doubt you will see a variety of original name out there

but there are actually a few other like cryptsy and poloniex, but what it matter more is a strong name, not the fact that contain bit, coin ecc.., i find for example bittrex as strong name

But at the same time it's good for branding. I also don't think names like Kraken are very good. They don't really tell you anything about the company. I agree that businesses shouldn't just be trying to put 'bit' in there because they feel like they have to but there's also nothing wrong with bitpay and bitbargain etc and it's good for adoption when people know what they probably do.

The name Bit or Coin or Bitcoin in the name makes me feel better that it's not some alt scam site.

Seriously it does not matter. As long as the name of the company or service is catchy I don't care if it is called Bitpay or Paybit. As long as it is good I will take it.
I agree, however, that these monothematic names can be tedious after some time - there is no fun when every bitcoin company has a 'bit' or 'coin' in its name.

Coin is a more general word, so that could include alt-coins.
Personally I do think that the name matters (you obviously wouldn't call your business a shitty name), but I think the service/product matters more.

I think it is very clear when a company incorporates the term bit- or -coin in their name, it might limit them, but for me it is a no brainer as whether or not they do business in crypto currencies. Why shouldn't they make it easy? I aggree it is like a jungle out there now, with too many companies doing the same shit with a lot of similar sounding names. It is hard to be original, but when you are and when you strike good a nonsense name like Xapo for example will have a solid base in the community, we all know it. It might have another meaning in another language, or be an acronym for something I do not know. When you can establish a name like that, you can broaden your horizon and venture on new grounds without the limitations of your name and use that name and it's history to gain trust and loyalty that has been built up.

The worst thing Satoshi could have done, was to call the token for the currency --> Bitcoin. It is most probably the most confusing explanation he could have used to name the token. I would have chosen something more

original like "DigiCash" - { Short for Digital Cash} or something like "MicroMoney" .....the coin in the name just creates confusion. Or simply "NotCash" .... Companies follow this coin naming convention and it just creates

more confusion.  ???

No matter what the name is used, it represents the behind company. If it offers great products and services, and always attract users, the brand is built up! Ppl will keep buying the products or using the services provided by the company! Ppl will remember the name!

Well, Coinbase is a success and it have Coin in it's name.
If the service/product is good enough, the name doesn't matter.
It's like BMW, Dell, Apple. Those names if not pathetic, have no mean, and those are ridicously big names around the world.

Name might help you a bit but it won't brake or make your business. Anybody who believes in this is a fool. In order to succeed, you better work hard, pull the right moves and treat your customers right. If you do so, you can pretty much choose any name and you will do good. But of course, if you do chose a right name on the top of all the above, you can improve your business.

I guess its a marketing scheme that works. If you use something under the Bit tag people will automatically understand that it's related to Bitcoin. You also got lots of companies using the Coin tag (Coinbase etc). I think aesthetically they are good names even tho at some point it becomes confusing trying to discern from one company to another.

That is what it means to create a Trade Mark™. Apple or Dell are just random word - yet they are recognized all around the world and 99% of people in civilized countries know about that companies.
In bitcoin we need something similar, crypto companies with not necessary Bitcoin related names.
