Unless someone translate it and point out where it says they are accepting Bitcoin, this post is pointless.

They "just" accept Bitcoin through Bitpay.
But hey, at least some large company in Germany is accepting Bitcoins.

It's on the homepage. This is great news. I wonder when have they started accepting Bitcoin, is there a news article? AFAIK there was a test period in April.

You can't really compare the two. Walmart:
Revenue $ 485.651 billion (2014)
Number of employees: 2.2 million

Through BitPay or not, at least they considered on accepting bitcoins. :D I wonder how many more large companies would consider accepting bitcoins in the near future? Our country (the Philippines) doesn't have much businesses that accepts bitcoin as payment. We have a large user base here in our country so if any bitcoin-accepting company would start a business here, I'm sure it will be heavily promoted.

If I was an owner of the big corporation or the company I would surely go step by step and accept Bitcoin through the Bitpay. Then after some time, I would switch when everybody else is switching. This is business, this is not a game, and being careful is a name of the game.

For Bitcoin, this is a great news. More we have on board, the merrier, simple as that. We need a majority to accept Bitcoin and then the minority will follow. Another great news, I think 4th or 5th this week.

Edeka is accepting Bitcoin via Bitpay since march or april this year. The company is not as big as Walmart but they are Germany's biggest grocery store. In 2014 the revenue was 51 Billion Euro.

Here is an older article from a german Bitcoin blog.

Nothing strange. There are to many other big businesses which accept bitcoin since some time. Can be named Microsoft, Dell, etc. It is good that these giants are followed by other giants in other countries. This is a big sign that the bitcoin has a secure future ahead of itself.

The website and company image kind of reminds me of Lidl, which isn't surprising since they are both German companies.
None the less, it is good news and a good addition to the Bitcoin accepting Businesses chain.

This is definitely good news and perhaps that encourage others in Germany to do the same.
Maybe Lidl and Kaufland make a move :)

Why is it "just". They still accept bitcoin and people can spend them there which is great. We need many more merchants willing to take the plunge. Doesn't matter whether they use bitpay or not at the end of they day.

Hey, German here.

Unfortunately I have to dampen your euphoria a bit. :-\

This is just a single market operating under the Edeka franchise. It is not the entire Edeka group. As you can read in the Wikipedia article, Edeka "consists today of several cooperatives of independent supermarkets all operating under the umbrella organisation".

So unfortunately it's not billions of revenue. But it's a start at least...

It's only a "just" because they immediately change Bitcoin to fiat money.
Accepting Bitcoin is a big step, no questions (particularly in the conservative Germany).
But I would like to see that they only accept Bitcoin, without a middleman.

It would be great if they pay salaries of their employees in Bitcoin.

Another step in the right direction for bitcoin.

This is where we need bitcoin, right down into the grass roots so to speak. Supermarkets is where people go almost everyday, its just a matter of time before some non-bitcoiners ask about this bitcoin thing so it will help with adoption over time.

What's your point? Bitpay does not dump it on the market for fiat, so there is no problem. AFAIK Bitpay is working with its investors and they buy those coins. There was a statement regarding this a few months back. They just "dump" it to investors. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8sNiawoG8o&feature=youtu.be) You can't honestly expect a established business to take a risk with something new that they probably do not even properly understand.

Out of all the supermarkets it is just a single 1? Are you sure about that? Where would it be located.

You get your salary at Bitcoin price of 230$,and tomorrow you wake up and Bitcoin worth 250$ or maybe 200$ :)

No. We can compare Edeka with Walmart. Walmart is the biggest supermarket chain in the United States. And Edeka is the biggest of its type in the Germany and probably the second largest one within the European Union (after Tesco of the United Kingdom). Right now, Edeka is holding a 26% market share in Germany, and it is increasing at a good pace.

I'm sure. It's a single market located in Hamburg. See here: https://www.edeka-lebensmittel.de/webshop/impressum/
Edit: Look at the Edeka-logo at the homepage. It says "Edeka Bleise", because Dennis Bleise is the operator of this single market.

The homepage of the Edeka Group (located in Hamburg as well) is: http://www.edeka.de

Baby steps will also get you to the Moon... it just takes a little longer.  ;D ...It's great news, but it's unfortunate that the timing is a bit bad... not a lot of people are spending

Bitcoin lately with these low prices. Merchants might be disappointing with the Bitcoin sales figures now...  :P

Today it's one supermarket... tomorrow it's the whole group.... and eventually all of them... Let's just hope, some of the German Bitcoin users will support it.   ;)

Thank you. Honestly, I did not check the website after asking the question. I guess it is still much better than nothing. Hopefully other stores will catch on.

I would disagree though. You have to compare the US to Germany then. The population that Walmart serves is just much larger than the one that Edeka serves in Germany. Besides, Walmart is literally (we could say that) everything compared to Edeka (which has some hypermarkets). I would say that Walmart is a "hyperhypermarket".   :D

It's something... Germany has a pretty good btc community, Berlin even has a Bitcoin street where all the vendors transact in btc. Still, unless one of these big retailers also offers to pay employees or even buy from btc accepting suppliers, thus keeping the chain of btc transactions unbroken, it doesn't make much difference. I think big guys like this German grocer are merely testing the waters to see how many of their customers actually want to pay with btc.

I will take any adoption of supermarkets as a step in the right direction. If I had 10 000 Satoshi's for every time
someone asked me, "Can I buy bread and milk with Bitcoin?" I would have had several Bitcoins by now.
People want to buy everything with Bitcoin that they are currently buying with fiat money.

Supermarkets open up a whole new market and demand for Bitcoin and enable mainstream adoption.

The owner of this Edeka market said that the experiment was successful. About 5% of customers have paid with Bitcoin.

Für Bleise ist das Experiment mit Bitcoin bislang klar erfolgreich. "Aktuell nutzen 5 Prozent unserer Kunden diese Zahlungsmöglichkeit".

The article is from the 4. September and the "experiment" started in April.

5 percent is a nice start for such a short period of time. I would like to see more Edeka stores implement Bitcoin as a payment option.
The next days I'm being again in Hamburg and will try to check out if payment via Bitcoin can also be done in store and not just online.

Does this involve over the counter payment or does it only applies to online grocery purchases. Firstly i can't imagine how that would work out for the over the counter scenario but for online, should be similar as any other bitcoin application. Looking at their business operation and revenue income i can imagine they are very big and if it is true, indeed it's a step forward for bitcoin

If only big supermarkets in the UK would accept BTC too (even if it was through BitPay).
Right now I have to buy gift cards with BTC.
