Title: Bticoin core recover wallet from bitcoin address
Post by: erotavlas on September 07, 2015, 10:49:02 AM
Hi,
I have used bitcoin core for two years. I just upgraded it to latest version 0.11 (64 bit windows 8.1) and now it does not start any more and I get an unrecoverable error. I tried to reinstall it many times and finally I cancelled both program and data folders. So now I have a fresh working bitcoin core, but without my wallet. I tried to trivially copy my wallet (which is updated on May) inside the data folder, but it does not work. I know my bitcoin addresses, but I do not have access to import keys. How can I do to recover my wallet?
Thank you

To spend Bitcoins in a Bitcoin address, you need a private key. If you don't have the private key, you won't be able to spend it even if you have the address. Try to find a backup of the wallet. You can also try to recover the files, assuming if its not overwritten by using recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva). Do not bear too much hope as your files might have been overwritten when a new wallet is created.

You should know that it's impossible to recover a wallet/coins from only the adresses otherwise the whole world will get his coins hacked , right ?
So, If you have the wallet.dat file which is supposed to have your public and private keys etc ... you should be able to get your coins back by importing it here : https://blockchain.info/wallet/import-wallet
Make sure to send them to your Desktop wallet once you do that , because keeping your coins in a Online wallet for a long time isn't a good idea .

You can't recover a wallet from a public Bitcoin address theres what we call a private key which needs to be inserted to unlock the wallet/funds if you will. without that you will lose everthing

You have to have the wallet.dat file to recover the wallet. There's no other way apart from that, unfortunately. If you can't find it, say goodbye to your coins.

This should work since you mentioned that you have still have wallet.dat available.
It's crucial to make a proper backup of your wallet. If wallet.dat wasn't available, you would have totally lost control of your coins.
Wallet.dat isn't a proper backup.
