... many were quick to proclaim the death of Bitcoin, particularly following the June 2011 bursting of the Bitcoin bubble...

...But following an undeniably rocky road the little digital currency that could appears to be having the last laugh. A good read can be found here on how Bitcoin is beginning to go mainstream...

His comments would be funnier if they didn't represent most people's initial reaction (e.g. "It's made on a computer, therefore it can be copied and cheated, therefore it cannot be trusted and should be worthless").  It adds to the already overwhelming sense I've got that for bitcoin to truly go mainstream an enormous portion of the public will need to get a basic intro to cryptography.  I'd wager that most people don't even know what modern cryptography is, let along that it already makes possible nearly everything they do online.

Amazing that people think that, but aren't interested in doing that (copying bitcoins) and getting rich while everyone is overvaluing them.

Very good press for bitcoin. One of the dangers I can see, is while governments would have a hard time banning a P2P currency like this, they could enforce laws that would not allow business to be legally transacting in BTC. If thats the case, that will scare away a lot of potential businesses. =/

In a way I believe the opposite is true. I think that as bitcoin becomes more mainstream, people will be willing to use it knowing less and less about the technical details of what underpins it. If everyone else is using it, then it must be alright... Its not fantastically logical, but that is still a big part of the reason I use a credit card for paying online, why I drive a car without thinking it will explode, despite it using fuel and heat, why I trust pills from a pharmacy and so on.
