Title: When will the Per-Block Payout Change?
Post by: interfect on June 04, 2011, 12:34:00 AM
Right now miners get 50 BTC per block. Eventually, when all the Bitcoins are mined, people generating blocks will get 0 generated BTC per block. At some point, the 50 BTC per block reward will have to go down.

Does anyone know when this is scheduled to happen?

the bitcoins transactions will have taxes, and the miners will win the taxes

The subsidy is halved every 210,000 blocks.

There are currently 81,545 more blocks until the reward is halved. At a rate of 7 blocks per hour (it's supposed to be 6, but we've been averaging much higher) that's 485 more days. Man ... I wonder what Bitcoin will look like in a year's time.

Bear in mind that this halving of reward is only as "bad" as doubling the difficulty. So it's not like that is going to kill bitcoin mining. Tx fees will probably be stable by then.
