I don't think you could have left this anymore open ended if you had tried.

It depends on several things;
Do you already own and are currently mining with the cards?
Does the BTC generated pay for the electricity cost used and leave you with a profit?

If both answers are yes why not carry on mining?

If you are thinking of buying new GPUS to start mining with I personally wouldn't bother at this point as you will most likely never see your money returned.

if given a choice of brand new card

139USD - 6950

369USD - 7970

278usd - 7950

which card is most worthwhile now to buy , lol for mining

You missed responding with the most important piece of information.

Does the BTC generated pay for the electricity cost used and leave you with a profit?

Or better yet, what is the price you pay for electricity.

In less than 50 days, most GPU miners will be losing money on each share, as the cost of electricity will exceed the value of the bitcoin returned (presuming the exchange rate then is not much different from today).  That is even without any ASIC shipment.  Add ASIC and that only exacerbates the GPU miner's woe.

So, unless you get free electricity, or really low (like you live near hydro or get it at $0.07 per kWh or less), then you probably shouldn't be considering adding GPU capacity unless you have another use for those GPUs (e.g., gaming).

if i had any 6xxx series, i'd sell immediately

ed:  well, to answer your question, no, it's not worth mining with 3x6950's.  6950's still sell for like $120-$140'ish on ebay and are equivalent to a *5850 in hash power.  the whole 6xxx line shouldnt be used for mining, it's better for gaming than the 5xxx line.  sell the 3x6950 and then buy 3x5830 and pocket the $150 or so diff

I'm still "casually mining" on 3x shader-unlocked liquid-cooled 6950's in my machine - it's a gaming rig, not a mining box.

The price of electricity is very barely worth it during peak hours, running it overnight is still rather profitable.

It sounds like you're wanting to buy a forth. Well, they're still great cards for gaming, and with four of them in crossfire you're still going to be able to blow the pants off pretty much every game. You won't make back the outlay for the card before the reward halves, unless you get it for next-to-nothing.

If you're still keen on getting the card, even not for mining, wait a few months and pick up a cheap ex-mining card!

Otherwise, keep mining until it becomes unprofitable. Surely that makes sense.

Depending on circumstances, electricity used for mining could be considered cheap to free through the colder months (unfortunately I'm on gas so it's still a marginal cost for me)

6950s are pretty fast for mining litecoin, and litecoin is still pretty profitable.
