Title: Possibly moving to Alabama soon to find work....
Post by: juggalodarkclow on October 15, 2012, 07:43:47 PM
So the economy here in the part of upstate NY I live in is abysmal to put it nicely. Nobody has any damn money, any good paying jobs are over 1 hour away and the cost of living is extremely high there. I have a friend who lives in Mobile, AL who wants me to move down there. He'll house me and help me find work until I'm able to stand on my own 2 feet.

Is there any member of this forum who lives near there that could give me some info on the local economy?

side note- there has to be a way to monetize this trip...hmmmmm....

Not sure yet, my friend is working on the details on his end. I'm hoping by the beginning of November.

As it happens, the Mises Institute (http://mises.org/) is based in Auburn, Alabama. Perhaps there's some intersection and opportunities with Bitcoin there?

If you play poker, you can head on over to Biloxi every weekend. If you do, tell the deals Bruno says hey.

Not much of a gambler but I have worked in a casino before so that's something to look into, thanks Phinnaeus

Received, thank you very much! Maybe I can meet fellow bitcoiners along the way and exchange coins for gas/food/etc? I know it has been done but I'd be willing to document my trip with photos/videos.

things seem to be moving in the right direction, my friend set me up with a phone interview with the district manager for Little Caesars in regards to a management position, it's nothing glorious but it's better than any response I've gotten up here. Time to sharpen up my resume and send it to the franchise owner.

You didn't really describe your skill set. You never know, someone here might be in a position to help out. Are you content to sling pizza for the rest of your life or do you have a plan?

You bring up a good point. I'm not looking for someone here to help me out in the sense of finding me a job, offering temp shelter, or anything like that. I was mainly looking for anyone that lived near there to give me some personal insight of the area and to find ways to possibly incorporate BTC into my trip either through monetization or exchanging coins for gas/food/etc. While I have no intentions of "slinging pizza" for the rest of my life, this job provides me the opportunity to earn a steady income all while searching for something better.

I'm a carpenter and work for my uncle's contracting business but the economy here has resulted in fewer jobs for us and other skilled laborers in the area which ultimately leads to diminished wages. I do have over 5 years experience in all aspects of the pizza business with 2 1/2 of those being a keyholding manager. Food service is not what I would call an ideal job but it's a means to an end. Plus, moving to a large metropolitan area would hopefully present me with better career options (I live in a town of less than 1,000).

I have a me, my girl, our 4 kids, and my father to worry about and I have to step outside of my comfort zone to make something happen. My father is highly skilled and educated but there's nothing locally that can use his skills and knowledge. Moving to this area would also hold more potential for him to find a suitable career that utilizes all of his abilities.

Remember, work is a two-way deal. If someone offers you a job, it's because they could use your skillset.

I don't know about Alabama but I know TN isn't doing too badly right now. Not sure that construction is doing so well but it's definitely a nice place to live and the cost of living is reasonable. Sounds like you're thinking Mobile which is close enough to the sea to have side benefits (if you were thinking Northern Alabama (other than, say, Huntsville), you might want to think again.)

Southern Alabama definitely has additional benefits. I haven't taken my family on vacation in over 6 years, it would be a lot easier living that close to the Gulf :)

I have knowledge and am self-trained in many areas but unfortunately a lot of employers won't give someone like me a chance unless I have an expensive piece of paper "proving" that I can do the job. For example, I buy broken TV's off Craigslist and fix them up and sell for a profit. I also fix and upgrade computers locally, mainly for family and family friends. I've thought about opening my own electronics repair shop but the taxes and start-up money necessary puts it just out of my reach.

That's why many of us on here hate government so much. It's a violent coercive force against decent, peaceable people like yourself who'd just like to make a living.

Plus here in NY I think their motto is "Bend over and take it bitch..... without lube", this state is ranked as one of the worst states to open/run a business. It sucks because the locals aren't very bright and I know if I could open my business I could profit and live decently. I have pretty much everything figured out as to how I'd operate my business with a ridiculously high profit margin but not enough cash to get it started. I buy broken electronics off Craigslist for next to nothing and fix them for a few bucks. I would offer repair services for pc's, tv's, xbox360's, and other electronics. I would also have a sales area where I could make 150-400% profit selling the items I purchased and fixed.

For instance, I bought a 60" Philips HD DLP for $40 because they said it wouldn't turn on anymore. I replaced the bulb for $35 and bought a pack of fuses for $3. Now in my living room is a good as new 60" HD DLP tv that cost me $78.

Genius. Let's be friends. :)
