Title: To theymos, BadBear and other DT members
Post by: Johny Depp on September 23, 2015, 12:06:11 AM
Roger Ver has launched a counter forum to BitcoinTalk, which is forum.bitcoin.com. I saw some same forum names of BitcoinTalk are present there. That is when it struck me that people might book the BitcoinTalk DT names on that forum to scam people. On checking, I found theymos and a few others are already booked. With a few email I had, I have booked the following names...

i. BadBear
ii. Tomatocage
iii. escrow.ms

^^These people may PM me to take their passwords. I think, it is good for other DT members to secure their names over there as well...

Thats a good thing you did there brother :)

Good job on that. However, I'm pretty sure that the forum will die out soon; most competitive bitcoin forums die out eventually. ;)

But you're right, there could be people who scam under trusted members' usernames there.

What - you mean that isn't happening on this forum? Trusted members & moderators are scamming here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=587759.0

This forum has become a haven for corruption & censorship.

Looks like it's catching up . That orange theme is really a sore to the eye though .

that orange theme gave me eyecancer. isn't there one decent professional forum around on a premium domain?

Yes. There is. Try http://forum.cloudmining.website.

No offense, but I wouldn't call a default phpBB theme forum on a subdomain of a gTLD a 'professional forum'. Even more so with the great lack of boards.

He asked for a professional forum not a ponzi forum on a premium domain.  :-\

You are right. That forum will be flop exactly like litecointalk forum. There is no incentive to use it really seeing how bitcointalk is dominating.
I think that people are not stupid and aware that person under identical nickname here and there could be totally different person tho.

Well done to the OP for attempting to stop naive people getting scammed but as far as the other forum goes, I'm not remotely interested in getting an account & posting on there. I'm perfectly happy getting all of my bitcoin related chat etc here.

I guess Roger Ver is aware of the fact that catching up with bitcointalk will be hard.
That's why he uses his magical powers money to give an incentive:
$1,000 Bitcoin prize for the most appreciated post on this forum!
Post by rogerver » Wed Sep 23, 2015 9:33 am

In order to attract more users, and quality posts to this forum, I'm glad to offer a $1,000 USD in bitcoin prize to the user who makes the most appreciated post on this forum.

The submission deadline will be whenever this forum reaches 10,000 human registered users, or, so long as the forum has at least 5,000 registered human users, Jan 1st, 2016, whichever comes sooner.

At that time, we will start a thread where people can nominate posts for the prize.
After two weeks for nomination submissions, the polling will begin, and be open for two weeks.
Forum members that registered before the deadline will be allowed to vote for which post was the most appreciated.

At the conclusion of the two weeks:
$1,000 USD in bitcoin will be paid to the author of the most appreciated post.
Somewhat desperate but not stupid 8)

I don't think staff from here would be interested participating on a forum hosted by Ver but it's good that the usernames remain unred the hands of someone that isn't a scammer or at least aren't used.

Btw, I can confirm that I registered in this forum.

Here (https://archive.is/4badQ#selection-1785.0-1785.39)'s my first post (before Roger deleted his reply calling me a shill).  :D

I have no idea why he chose phpBB with that gawdawful skin. If he wanted to compete with this forum he should have used SMF, which people like and are comfortable with. I registered over there and will check in once in awhile is all.

I don't like the site, and i don't like the fact that were once more spreading into mini-groups. One bitcoin forum is more than enough to keep things in one place and quickly accessable.
Next thing you know, we will have 99 btc forums, and none will matter anymore. Doubt there will be much exploiting of name leeching, but that's something that site owner could of consider,
like maybe if he himself reserved all taken usernames from here.

No, it won't. There is no reason for people to switch from this forum to that other mini-forum. This forum already has all of the content, posters, signature campaigns, and everything anyone would want.

hmm, that's a scary thought. scammers are always thinking of the next move.

that forum is a dead end, anyway. for any other forum to reach critical mass at this point (vs. bitcointalk) is basically impossible IMO. i doubt anyone is looking for a forum on bitcoin.org, nor would i want to associate with anything roger ver....

I agree, death to decentralization. Long live the theymos censorer.

Well, not like we don't have multiple fora already.  There's bitcointalk and /r/bitcoin.
oh wait... they're both owned run by the same guy, so I guess that's cool.

When censorship will occur:
I intend to let any sort of honest discussion take place on this board, but overt attempts at fraud or deception will be dealt with.

One example that may already have happened is the registration of a user name of someone well known in the space by someone other than that actual person. If that is found to have happened, the user will be forced to change their user name, or to create a new account.

ok, so i see you have a strong attitude against this forum, so why do you spend time here ?
You're not the first one to have different view on things, and criticizing Theymos, but i still don't see that censorship some of you talk about.

Oh, where to begin...
You know there are people who continue living in countries ruled by dictators?  Strange but true.  Some too indifferent to move, some too lazy, some actually believe they could right the wrong, oust the malignant little control freak who usurped control of this forum, that it's worth doing, because fighting for what you believe in is... wait, did I say 'this forum'?  I meant 'their country.'  Country! Got carried away there :-[

I'm also not the first one to say that 2+2=4; You don't see the censorship because you're not meant to see it; this forum is heavily moderated.
Duh.

I can't see a problem with there being several forums. In another niche I am a part of there are several hundreds of forums about it, the most successful ones stay alive while those with no new ideas die out. I don't see this as a problem whatsoever, nor do I see why this couldn't work with Bitcoin either.

As mentioned previously, while I have no problems with the moderation here, if these forums were to be censored it would be good to have another place to discuss such things on.

I guess it would be a good idea to sticky a thread somewhere here stating,, any deals possibly done on that forum with a trusted username from this forum should be asked to sign a message posted from a long time ago on this forum. You just know there is going to be trouble though doh

That would be useless if the deals are happening on the other forum, not here. It would be a better idea to sticky such a post on the other forum, rather than here.

Hardly usless when anyone that goes to that forum would more than likely have come from and spent days here, in the meantime would of had a very high chance of seeing it. Also the scammer will likely refer them to this forum to check their so called feedback. But yes a sticky on that forum would also be helpful.

I registered but didn't receive an activation email. At least now it can't be used by a scammer.  ;D

I find bitcoin.com forum very difficult to catch the thread titles because the original poster and date are under the title. They should modify the theme to have those two lines in a different colour.

I registered and the activation email was sent to me about 8 hours later, it might be manual or just delayed.

Doesn't look like there is too much context there yet.

Does not seem so. BitcoinTalk forum mod EAL (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=140584) is also a mod at forum.bitcoin.com.
