Title: Creepy iOS 9
Post by: fryarminer on September 29, 2015, 06:08:27 AM
Hey I am totally creeped out by my cell phone popping up a message when I go to my car, telling me how long it will be before I arrive at the location I want to go.
First of all, how does it know I'm at my car?
Secondly, I never use iOS Maps, so how does it know where I usually go, and at different times of day?
Then it says: "x amount of time before you get home". The catch is that I never programmed into my phone where "home" is.

I am not comfortable with this.

The real question is - If I am using bitcoin for anonymity, what am I going to do about cell phone? Back to the flip phone?

Check and see if you have a contact for yourself that says "me" in gray letters to the right of your name.

Disclaimer:  Apple sucks

Lol that's creepy.

I turn everything off that I don't need. If you go to Settings > Mobile data, scroll down and turn some stuff off that you don't need

I actually don't! I checked twice.

But it gets more creepy. I bought a phone for my brother (he paid for it but asked me to buy it). When he upgraded to iOS 9, the contact info for his phone switched to my name, and listed every single email and phone number and address I've ever used.

I don't use Apple products, but I know that most electronic devices these days default to what I consider "privacy invasion mode", where information is shared as often as possible.

You actually have to work (removing and disabling) if you want to enjoy both privacy and modern electronics.

For a more private phone (at the cost of "features") I recommend an android phone with cyanogenmod installed. After that, simply be careful about which apps you install and which services you sign in to.

I think you are freaked out by the cleverer "Siri" in iOS9. It is now able to guess what "it" or "here" means (certainly "home" too) in context and respond by doing the correct "thing". The phone knows you are in your car because you might have paired your phone to the car via bluetooth.

Brilliant innovation for Apple to help the poor. Now every time you leave or return to your house your iPhone can notify your exact location via email which in turn can be hacked by savvy burglars.

Sounds a bit creepy for sure. I've heard that all the location data is only stored locally on the phone though and not in the cloud which should help protect privacy.

I think you can turn off location services.

"Okay, guys, according to fryarminer's iOS 9 feed, he'll be home any sec. Let's all have some real fun and totally fuck with him today. HAHAHA (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=990219.0) Radio, you continuously play Slim Whitman's Indian Love Call. Lamp, you blink every time he inhales. Toaster, you randomly yell out "Bitcoin". I'll clean up the shit on the floor that he deposits. Here he comes! Get in position."

I prefer android over iOS, but I prefer Max OSX over Windows, so yea. My thoughts do not count for much at this point in time.
