Title: Spoiler Tags
Post by: caffeinewriter on October 22, 2012, 05:28:30 PM
I know some of these threads have very lengthy replies, so it'd be nice to have [spoiler]Stuff[/spoiler] tags. This way you could hide rather large posts to be expanded upon a click. Many other forums already implement this. Anyone agree with me?

I agree.

That would be very useful for users which like to insert a considerable quantity of information in one single post.

Not to mention large images.

It would be very useful if used properly, but I know it will be used to troll and become annoying.

Good idea, I would also like to use spoiler tags.

Most threads look cluttered with a wall of text, so it would be a very good idea to separate pieces of information.

Also, various formatting issues withbigger blocks of texts would be gone.

I'm updating our service announcement thread with price reductions & it would be nice to include the full list in a spoiler tag

It's probably possible to achieve spoiler tags through a longpoll image that expands once you hit a link.

I'm still hoping to see [spoiler] tags, since this technique requires a server, some technical knowhow, and more work than simply adding [spoiler][/spoiler] around text. That would be tremendously more feasible.

...or you know, use javascript to expand a section.

+1 for the spoiler tag.

It's an useful function.

Good thinking on your feet. But, yes spoiler tags are a very useful feature in any type of site. It would reduce the amount of information on some pages. And, also SPOILERS which I don't want to see.

Uses:

  • Hiding big-ass images
  • Keeping Spoilers unspoiled
  • Keeping large blocks of text tamed

Downsides:

  • You have to add a few kilobytes to your code.

I need spoiler tags for my bibliographical project here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=552803.msg6161452#msg6161452) in the Italian section.

I'd like them for discussions about TV shows and films etc, but also to hide images if there's quite a few pictures of an item you're listing in the marketplace.

I'm not sure if new features will be implemented in the current forum, but now there is this section to discuss about features of the new one:
Bitcoin Forum > Other > Meta > New forum software  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=167.0)

A quote from the sticky post in that section:

If you have any ideas for new features or changes that are reasonably high-priority and realistic, discuss them in this section.

I'm not even sure if that section existed when I originally made this thread. Hell, it was a year and a half ago now. Still no spoiler tags ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm adding a thread to the new subforum right now.

Yep, that section didn't exist at the time. I was referring to the recent bump after some months. :)

BTW, it seems it has been accepted:
This sounds like a good idea. Luckily I'm working on the BBCode editor right now so I'll try and see if I can get this in there.

Indeed that section was created in Mar 2014, and you can find the very first thread there (the sticky made by theymos) was created on Mar 20.

Yes, please do it.

EDIT: Looks like you have already done that a week ago :D

Wanted to provide some examples on how to do color(USA)/colour(Great Britain+Canada) properly

These are 4 examples on how you do it!
The simple way:
Code:
[glow=black,2,300]Hello world[/glow]
More advanced ways:
Code:
[color=yellow][glow=black,2,300]Hello world[/color]
Code:
[color=pink][glow=green,2,300]Hello world[/color]
Code:
[color=red][glow=cyan,2,300]Hello world[/color]

Hello world 1
Hello world 2
Hello world 3
Hello world 4

So maybe we don't need  8) spoiler tags?

While I agree it would be a pretty cool feature, I think it would lead to increased activity in the off topic section aka spam section which is not what the forum needs.

Additionally you could simply make the background color to be the same as the color of the test to do effectively the same thing as a spoiler tag.

Title: Re: Spoiler Tags
Post by: abacus on November 17, 2014, 03:48:55 PM
The background-color trick is better than nothing but it can hide the text only if the content is... text! :)

You cannot spoiler, for example, an image.
