Title: Lender's Log! (Check here prior to loaning!!)
Post by: TheGr33k on October 08, 2015, 01:54:31 AM
This thread will be prettier as time goes on, but it's a simple principle and we'll see how it plays out:

This thread is for lender's to post their active-loans that they are comfortable being public and the reason for this thread's creation is to stop multiple-loan scamming / double-fulfillment.

Post your active loans below to have them added to the public log, and when the loan is concluded please get in contact with me to update it's status!

Per discussion here : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1200989.msg12629938#msg12629938

I think it's a good idea. An all in one spot to double check all the loans.

Good idea, but manual lists are hard to keep up to date.  An automatic system would be much better, but hard to implement.

There is an active thread going on where members are discussing creating an extension for browsers that allow lenders to do just that. I'm just attempting to band-aid the situation and hold down the fort while I've got some time available to be active and maintain a real-time loan thread. Nothing major, but any lender that wants to be involved has to do their part and the thread shouldn't be too hard to maintain. Might make scam-busting even easier.

I am fairly certain that tspacepilot does not give a shit about the community, and as such has zero interest in making such a script.

It really should not be difficult to check for any open loans, all a potential lender will need to do is search the lending sub with the potential borrower's username, check his untrusted feedback for neutral notes saying they have an open loan, and check their post history for evidence of an open loan.

It should be impossible for a borrower to use the same collateral twice as a lender should not fund the loan until the collateral is properly secured by either himself or an escrow. There is also no real reason why someone cannot borrow from two lenders at the same time, or have two loans open. Plus the most common issue with "double borrowing" will be that the borrower makes multiple loan requests and then two lenders fill the loan almost at the same time.

@Vod: we're currently discussing about the best way to attack the scammers: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1200989.msg12630947#msg12630947
Since you're one of the bigger loaners out here, maybe you can join us. It would be nice to have a lot of opinions :)

@TheGr33k: while we're waiting untill i have the time to create a poll, maybe you can add my loans to your thread to? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1181834.msg12435612#msg12435612
Thanks!

Plus the most common issue with "double borrowing" will be that the borrower makes multiple loan requests and then two lenders fill the loan almost at the same time.

A lot of lenders these days are unfortunately accepting small loans to low-level accounts for small amounts of BTC. Most do not leave neutral feedback, and for whatever reason many also do not read untrusted feedback. I agree he probably has no interest in making a script for the community, but I'm sure there are others who would be willing if it was drawn out properly and thoroughly with significant benefit laid-out clearly. There isn't any reason why a borrower can open more than one loan at a time, however it would be a nice thing to know if they already have a public loan active.

I agree if a borrower spams two threads quickly this system does not help assist against that other than the fact that it is reminding users constantly to check this thread, along with the most recent posts of other threads for the aforementioned scam-type.

@altcoinhosting I have added yours to the log!

Well the number of people it is actually a good idea to lend to, that actually request loans is very low right now. It is also not necessarily a scam if someone is attempting to borrow additional money while having an outstanding loan (they could have underestimated their needs, and requested a lower amount in order to avoid paying excess interest.

If a lender is not willing to make a simple neutral feedback (and if they are not willing to check for neutral feedback), then I do not see why they would be willing to post (or check) this thread. I would say in a best case scenario, you will need to check for outstanding loans yourself to update this thread, and follow up on loans to confirm once they have been repaid.

This is not the first time a thread like this has been created, and I am not sure how successful it was. I think the concept is good, however there are simply too many lenders who are clueless as to how to protect themselves.

Definitely curious as james has asked, as I'm sure we could get a community pool together for something rather quickly unless I am over-estimating things :P
If you do not wish to publicly answer, then I will be in touch via PM when it is appropriate.

Thank you for your input, and I am very aware of the tremendous amount of work this thread may amount to. It was just an idea we got talking about in another thread and I ran with it figuring it couldn't do any harm. At the very most I end up wasting time and at the very best I save someone from getting scammed. I suppose we'll see how it plays out.

My demo is already running since yesterday. It's ugly as f*ck, and most functionality isn't included yet (if i ever make a beta version, both layout and functionality will be fixed.... I'll only make a beta if the community agrees to use my tool tough)... but it shows you how i would make a tool like this:

Your tool doesn't scrape this forum, does it?   It would need to be integrated into TSP's script to be of any use.  Otherwise you are just transferring from one manual system to another.

Be sure to use escrow if you do end up trading with him. I would hate to see you get your hard earned btc stolen from you.

No, it doesn't scrape the forum... I could make a scraper, but i'd hate to reinvent the wheel. If TSP already has a good scraper available, that would be fine  :)

EDIT: an alternative to scraping the full forum would be this:
- every lender opens an account on my ledger, and adds his/her loanthread
- we all use the same (hidden) tag around our open loans (for example, and anchor-tag)
- i schedule an hourly cronjob, fetch all first pages of all loanthreads for everybody in my database. I use a simple domparser to parse all loans

This will ofcourse only work if everybody uses the same tags around their open loans...

i like the idea from altcoinhosting, as long as i know "most" ppl that give out loans its cool. its a pain in the ass to check the whole sub for every user that requests a loan.

Either would work...Should start crowfunding with an escrow holding the funds... im sure the active lenders would like something to simplify their jobs too.

If you use my tool, crowdfunding won't be necessary... I really hate scammers, so i would create an online ledger for free (i wouldn't mind getting something in the tipjar once it's completely finished tough ;) )

Well... I'm thinking about creating an online ledger without scraper to begin with, and then use the API of the ledger to communicate with a decentralised scraper (probably written in perl, and running as a cronjob from one of my VPS's). That way, i'll avoid heavy load on my main server :)

Don't worry about tipping. I was only half-serious when i mentioned it in the first place... I'll do the work for free if the community has a concensus to use the ledger, offcourse i won't complain if i get a small tip now and then... :)

EDIT: at the moment, i don't think we've reached a concensus ;) https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1203414

It is just an idea but maybe you could add in the OP if an escrow is involed in the loan.

yeah. borrower sounds good. using the words lendee or loanee doesn't feel right lol. OP may change it back if he wishes, but imma use the term borrower for now.

OP has been updated with the requested loan(s), and the format has been updated. Thank you very much for providing a cleaner table for me to work with. I like it better than mine :P
If anybody else would like their loans added, just let me know. I'll be hunting for reference links to those without it a little bit later if I get the time :D Thanks for the comments and assistance, I don't mind if you hold your discussions that are relevant here at all!

I suggest you move Borrower to the first column and sort it from A-Z.  That is the information people are looking for.

I was trying to decide how I should sort it and I couldn't decide for myself. Thank you for the suggestion; it's like you could read my mind. :o

Gonna go handle that in just a minute..

EDIT : OP re-formatted as suggested, and it is an improvement! Thanks Vod.

It's possible, but this is only to keep track of active-loans for the most part, how beneficial would it be to know that it has been extended when all you came here to know if there was an open-loan?
If I were to maintain comments, then I might as well keep a log of every loan conclusion as well, but there's no need for that. Maybe I could keep a log of defaulted loans, transferred accounts via collateral or other things of that nature?

Ok sorry for not back reading I thought this will be like a ledger that will be updated from time to time and list will be longer as time goes by so I example I ajrah asked for a loan from you (example) you can check this log and check how many times I asked for a loan for the past few months and how am I as borrower, like am I always late in paying or am I always asking for an extension or something like that but anyway, nice log and this this will definitely help lenders and future lenders. Kudos to all of you.

Yeah, it is mostly just so that lender's don't get caught off guard by somebody attempting to take out multiple loans shadily. I don't want to make it impossible to search through and thus I'll try to keep it as compact as possible so it actually remains useful. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing :D

Be sure to use escrow if you do end up trading with him. I would hate to see you get your hard earned btc stolen from you.

Yes definitely mate :)

Heya james.lent, it seems like you guys have basically figured out your issues without any services from me, which is cool, I'm kinda swamped at the moment.

About escrow: it's my opinion that a trusted, neutral, third-party escrow is crucial for protecting yourself when trading with someone on the internet.  But can you believe that some people on here have even been caught using themselves as escrow in order to fraudulently collect escrow fees from another party and to farm trust for their alts (ahem (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=358020))?  Hard to believe what some people will stoop to, no?

Anyway, I don't think this thread is about escrow, so let's try to keep things on topic, shall we Quickseller?

The idea itself welcomed, Not sure how much it will live (example , what update list when @TheGr33k  take loan self with own account as collateral? :) )
Other thing  The is no sense add in list borrower which take loan with  collateral (if is bitcointalk account , he can not take second loan until the collateral is properly secured by either himself or an escrow, or if it gave other valid collateral,   nothing stops ask other loan )

I don't use skype, so I'm immune to this attack.  However, others should know that Quickseller has a history of revealing the IP addresses of people on skype.  Apparantely, he has a tool which reveals the IP address of a skype contact, and he often posts those IPs on this forum.  Again, I don't use skype so I'm not in the know, I'm sure it's possible to use skype via a proxy.  This is just meant as a forewarning others.  See QS' post history for examples of what I'm talking about.

I think this kind of thread should be maintained by a more active and a bit dedicated forum user than OP as this should be updated constantly. I knew this would happen, thats why i didnt put my loans in here. I have created an account called TheLedger and copied this thread. See this https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1207414.0

I have updated the whole list, please double chek if everything is correct. People can decide which one to use. I am online 24/7 so the list will be updated at least once in 24h. Also the account can be shared or handed over in case of Holidays or whatsoever.

i dont like the solution but People seem to like it.

so, here we go.

I love the idea of keeping an up-to-date database of current loans but I think it could only work on a short term period because it starts to be boring to update this on a regular basis.
I don't really know how many loans are approved every day but I'm sure it is too much for a person to keep an up-to-date list of them. Anyway, I'll will give it a try.

Maybe "TheLedger" nick could be shared between some trusted members who could update the list of loans.
