Title: Do you think there'll be an altcoin that will take over Bitcoin?

Could this happen?
What do you think?

Eventually, yes.  But as a store of value BTC will always be around, I think.

I dont think so. Bitcoin will be no 1 for a long time. Its just too late to change it.

But number 2,3,4 are up for grabs. So imo, the altcoin wars are all about these spots.

MANY years later, possibly after THIS generation is dead, hey, y not. I can see the fun of people wanting to buy and mine over time, but BTC will hold it's own as a baseline.

Bitcoin is the mother coin, so she gave birth to all of the craze lately and now there are possibly going to be a few vying for her position in many years.

It is very possible as we know in the technology field, there is always something that meant to surpass the original and eventually takeover. For bitcoin another alt currency will take over but it may happen a decade or more. And yes bitcoin may still be the prime basis for its value.

Yes but it will be made by a big company like Amazon or Microsoft or Facebook etc..
Companies that have large user bases could launch a game changer anytime!
I think the key will be if the new currency can be used as a store of value
So it can be handled like a stock on the NY stock exchange.
If who over rolls it out turns it's back on the crypto markets that will be bad.
And may hamper overall adoption..

@OP
Did you mean to ask if an open source Github coin will take over?
I doubt big companies like Facebook would make a digital currency open source.

I don't think so at the moment! Btc has attracted the most vc capital and its ecosystem is built up. No alternative can replace at the moment.

The coins you mentioned will be called centralized one, completely different concepts from bitcoin. I doubt it will be adopted by the global, like bitcoin.

Probably replaced by Ether if bitcoin cannot be used in smart contracts. But bitcoin will evolve.

NO,that is so not possible in this century atleast.
however if if if bitcoin breaks considering the recent threats like XT..block size issues,,then surely a new coin will lead.

One time there will definetely be a cryptocurrency which will take the place of Bitcoin. But i don't see this cryptocurrency in the group of the already existing ones.

I think yes
Bitcoin is not perfect, so a new altcoin with better features will take over

Another answer I have is "I hope so"
Bitcoin hasn't accomplished much.. And adoption has been in decline.
Although I thought the value of over a grand usd was way too high.
It's funny all altcoins are compared to Bitcoin which is close to being a failure.
So what does that say about altcoins?
So the answer should maybe be,  you better hope so..

Just think what Bitcoin would be like if all the people pushing their own little altcoin had
focused their efforts on supporting and improving Bitcoin itself and
most important of all improving Bitcoin adoption.

.. Instead we have around 8,000 crap coins being flogged in the hopes of striking it rich.
Selfish, Greedy, irresponsible.
Coindesk published a story way back saying more coins the better..
How's that working out for ya guys?
But but but it attracts new users.. Mm hmm heard that before.
Ya great.. What we really need is unscrupulous kids and deceitful douche bags
to pile into the scene in the desperate hope of artificially inflating the value of some crap coin
so they can dump it on some noob victim for a profit.

Edit:
You know guys I am not against making money with this stuff it's why I started.
But, it's one thing to label something a currency then see it's not being used as one (as intended)
You will see on market sites, the news etc current prices for the euro or the usd or Canadian dollar etc but.. They are actually being used!
You want something to compare your little crap clone coins too?
And yeah I say clone because when there is literally thousands of coins
Then the excuses for their creation are unjustifiable.
Things should not have gotten like this.

More like banks working with a tech company.

I think no because there are no serious altcoin developers who create good altcoins, most of altcoins are created for quick profit by developers and companies but no one making a long term coin and another thing is 99%+ altcoins are traded against btc that means they depends on bitcoin, without bitcoin they are nothing

It's going to be XMR, because we have a really nice and progressive community. It's true that there has been no official wallet introduced in 1.5 years since the launch, but I'm sure that our developers can make it happen sooner or later!

The market cap of XMR is still lower than Bytecoin. It seems there are more active developments in Bytecoin.

Well XMR is a fork of Bytecoin, I guess bytecoin got talented developers :)

There are no altcoins that can take over bitcoin. Many of the altcoins are created to take away bitcoins from other users. Unless an altcoin can attract real world use, then there may be chance it can take over bitcoin.

I think so, Bitcoin will pave the way for a wider understanding of cryptocurrency then I would imagine at some point one will emerge that will take it one step further, but Bitcoin I would think will always be around as it has made too much of an impact now to just die off, it could be treated as a higher value coin similar to gold and used for long term investment?

If more Bitcoin development will be present in the future then Bitcoin is hard to take over.

If Bitcoin development will just remain as it is today possibility of other altcoins to take over are possible "but" of course to make this altcoin beats bitcoin, development of that altcoin must surpass of what Bitcoin is today.

Well think about it this way, if bitcoin fails, what makes you think we won't keep jumping to other currencies?

An 'altcoin' (aka: linked into BTC one way or another) will probably not take over BTC.

Another crypto financial system with it's own (independent of BTC) currency may take over and establish as the number 1 crypto solution, which BTC has not been able to produce.

That could be Ethereum. However, we can create a financial system based on bitcoin.

Eth or XMR?

XMR most likely.

A lot of projects such as ETH and DASH only really exist because they've found a way of pumping money into supporting their existence. It's a case of life-support-machine mechanics: The heart is beating but without support it would simply die.

There's simply no substitution for a large genuine community, and that is why XMR always has the edge, as well as having the better technology anyway.

As for Bytecoin, well classic example right there: It has a high market cap, but only because it exists on HitBTC which is an exchange controlled by the BCN developers. Remove the curtain, and becomes painfully obvious that no-one actually uses Bytecoin at all. It literally has no community whatsoever.

So it's important to be wary of smoke, mirrors and hype that is derived from money pits rather than solid roots.

could be possible? yes, i think it will be real in next years? no :P

i seriously doubt that an alt coin can have the same backup that bitcoin already have, just look on how many millions of money have been already invested in bitcoin and all those companies who are winning money by manufacturing hardware...

ETH and XMR might be more valuable than other altcoins, but they're not actually taking them over.  That's what BARR is trying to do.
