Title: Some fun and not so fun times at the MSI forum
Post by: Hippie Tech on October 26, 2012, 02:42:58 AM
Greetings World :)

A few days after I began to mine with my new MSI R7870, I began to wonder if downclocking the gpu's memory is really as safe as it seems. So I started a thread asking that question on the MSI forum and for whatever reason I got jumped by some all knowing moderator and his/her sidekick.

They could not, or would not, comprehend anything I had to say about my experiences with the downclocked memory and how it improved the system's overall mining performance. The mod then banned me for 3 days after reading my pm, complaining about my thread being locked.

http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162703.0

Was this treatment politically motivated or did I bruise someone's fragile ego ?

Wow, that forum sucks. So much fail

This thread will be locked. Mind your words next time or we have to take further action
Lolwut? You post some screenshots and explain things and the reply is this??

And what they say is false, reducing memory clock here lower my GPU temperature a lot->i can overclock it more or keep the same overclock with a lower temperature.

Nooooooo !! xD

Plz don't say that. I just made my first whole bitcoin. ahahah

"There is no confusion like the confusion of a simple mind..."

I made that noooberous quote up on the spot. Do you think that did it ?  ::)

I am as dumbfounded as you are. They never looked it up and even tried to misrepresent what I had said and what the screenies were showing.

Unless MSI and/or it's forum apologizes for allowing that kind of behaviour, I will not be posting again there any time soon.

Or... a second or third R7870 will help to ease my pain. :p

Please know that I am not here to bash MSI or its products. The R7870 TFIII is a powerhouse and judging by the STUPIDLY low temps, this MSI gpu is STUPIDLY efficient. So far, I've had it as high as 1230mhz on the core, 440 mhash/s, stock 1.218v. and +5% Power limit. wooot wooot !

One hears all this bla bla about how the internet is so "democratic".  It is bullshit.  It is lord of the flies out here.

"flobelix" is an idiotic feeble minded twat. Underclocking video memory most certainly does lower overall card temperatures. You should seek out the global moderator of that forum, and have his moderator status revoked for not knowing what the fuck he's talking about.

Thats the 3rd time that has happened to me in 2.5 years. Amd game > Sapphire > Msi forums... The Sapphire mod was a real nut.

MSI has great customer service in Canada... turn around time on motherboard replacement is like 3 days...

There is nothing civil about discrediting misinformation. History has shown force and hostility are the only effective methods. Enjoy living under your rock, though.

@ kwoody
If your 'model' includes repeating the past's mistakes, then yes, force and hostility are quite effective at that.

That whole thread is full of fail. They can't fathom GPGPU computing at all. OP is the only one with a coherent statement. It's likely a bunch of 14 year old Call Of Duty zitfaces. They would be completely [headexploded] by the thought of underclocking and undervolting a card to maximize it's energy efficiency per work, and aren't going to understand W ∝ V^2.

MSI: "tech support is a cost center, we'll just let dumbasses talk to each other in a forum so they don't call us".

The answer is no, you aren't going to damage your card, in fact you may extend it's life by reducing electromigration. There will just be underclocks and undervoltages where the card is no longer stable.

LOL.. but I like farming on Mars. xD

I did the best I could with my temp guesstimates and tbh, I didn't notice if the mhash/s were affected. If it did, the +/- would have been minimal. I've gone as low as 600mhz on the memory but keep it at 750 because anything lower makes the system a little unstable when watching vids/ surfing the web.

As I said in that thread, the gpu and vrm temps dropped a minimum of 5-7C. The mobo/chipset is also down 3-5C.

I'm using Guiminer with the following flags.. -v -w128 -f70

I called tech support to complain and they didn't seem to care. At the start of the conversation I was told that the forum is run by some dudes at HQ and that the forum is 'unofficial'. ???

I may eventually try it but will stick with guiminer for now.

Judging from the other 7870s on the comparison chart, there does not seem to be much of a difference between the two.

As if his email box isn't overkill enough, I'm going to recommend a 7850 and set it in solo mode for a while and hope his beginners luck pays off once more. ahha

Crazy ? Don't mind if I dooo !  :o  Or do you mean "I just bought an Asus ST990fx" crazy ?  :P

If the days of gpu mining are numbered as some say they are, then one found block is all that is needed to cover the initial $550 cost of the build. The resale value of a 7850, or better, htpc would easily cover the cost of the gpu.

I'm running my 7870, 70-80% pool, 20-30% solo...

You will not solve a block on your own with a single GPU.... (am I wrong here?)

I know bugger all about overclocking or anything like that ( hardware and programming just isn't my thing ) but when it comes to these 'official' and corporate boards don't worry if you get banned, you can honestly get banned off them by accident, especially they're trying to satisfy parents who are scared of the internet but won't parent their own children.

I once got banned off SOE's forum for calling someone an imbecile :D.... Or it might have been a moron >_> anyway.

Never used BTCmine but I assume that like other pools is using a certain interval of time to approximate your hashrate. Try to increase (in your account settings) that interval if possible to obtain a greater precision.
