Title: What can I do with this GPU Server...
Post by: Pyr3x on October 17, 2015, 10:08:19 AM
I built this GPU rig about a year ago for cracking hashes but I do not use it 24/7 and right now it's doing nothing... I know very little about altcoins as I mine bitcoin but I was curious to know of this rig is worth using for anything.

It has 6x Sapphire Radeon R9 290X 4GB DDR5 in it...

No photos on my tablet so I can show you the video of it running here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItVVNGrypz8

That's an awesome rig! It would do extremely good mining. You can go here to estimate your profitability and determine the best coin to mine:

Cheers!

Thank you!

It's a nice 4U rackmount setup which took me a great deal of time to get running stable as I compiled my own software for utilizing the GPUs. It ran hashcat like a dream! Lol

Thanks for the info I'll start looking into the other currency types and see what might be worth mining. The only down side to this rig is that it eats power for breakfast... I have literally melted some improper cables during my initial runs.. I had to switch to heavy duty cables and high rated outlets.

That is a beauty! I have a couple 290's I run myself, I usually just leave it on whatever is paying best on nicehash, or solo mine some intersting alts. You should be able to have some fun with it, that is for sure!

Thank you, I am quite proud of it! Just one thing... It's LOUD! The fans needed to move the kind of air through the rack to maintain the temps I needed for cracking hashes meant installing some rather beast fans..

Mine etherum.

Would it be worth the energy cost? Why do you suggest this currency?

i'd use it to mine XMR..
all alts are going down atm; not sure if there is any you really can make a profit with atm.

but: i am a believer ;-)
(i dont trust eth... core dev burned way to much money for what he has delivered: but PLEASE judge for yourself: anyone [including me] is biased here)

Wow, that's awesome.

You could create an account at https://www.miningrigrentals.com and let other users rent your server (i.e. for mining new coins), you get paid in BTC (use them to buy altcoins).
When you rig is not rented, you can set up several pools and mine other coins.

http://poolpicker.eu might be helpful to choose a pool in case you want to get paid in BTC instead of collection several altcoins.

What's the rig's total speed @ the pool?

Nice rig! I would love to see a picture of the inside!

To contribute to the conversation, i would say that ethereum and its forks would be most worth your time. In my expereince ive still made more soloing ethereum and i have half of your setup.

I am honestly considering selling this rig here on the forum. I can provide better pictures and details later today.

I'd get a feel for what other rig renters are getting for hash on places like Nicehash or Westhash. Betarigs is also decent but honestly it ends up being a bit of work keeping your rig rented, dealing with any issues, etc, and also updating the pricing to current market conditions.

Making money with rigs is being ready for the "Ninja Launches", when a new X11 coin or whatever algo is the flavor of the day is released the price for that algo can spike many fold over.

So you want to make sure you're running a setup which does auto switching, and easilly allows you to go from algo to algo.

Nice rig, Good Luck!
