Title: [Overview] The one thread to link them all
Post by: shorena on October 22, 2015, 07:09:59 AM
This is an attempt to collect and order every single important, useful or interesting thread for bitcointalk.org. This is for now based on my personal watchlist and thus can not be complete. If you think a thread is missing post a link and an ultra short (few words) summary below.

Disclaimer: Some of these threads might be outdated and/or contain wrong information. A linked thread does not equal endorsement.

Here is another thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1087042.0 . Seeing as you added Signature campaign thread, an avatar campaign thread should be added as well.
P.S: Good idea, btw there should also be a thread for the recent drama, eg: marco's hacked account selling, QS drama, dicebitcoin drama, dice.ninja drama... and the list just goes on.

Added the avatar thread thanks. I not like the idea to add drama threads, but I will keep it mind if there is more demand.

I meant someone could make a "Latest Drama" thread to keep up with the news in bitcointalk. And BTW just remembered another one: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1205533.0 for people who like to think about several points before investing in a ponzi, honestly I think ponzis shouldn't be promoted but seeing that people even invest in dying ponzis like scrypt or ponzis that will run if they get even a 0.005 deposit, it may help some newbies.
And shouldn't this be in meta as it directly refers to the forum?

Alright , here you go another thread about wallets and difference between them basically : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1213406.0 I'm helping OP to update it as-well , so I may add more information's on it once I come back from school .

Hmm, drama threads could probably be located in the Off-topic section. It could get a child board there. As for some useful threads, I think you should add the Stake your bitcoin address thread here for future reference. Also, appropriate board for this is in Meta. :)

I guess meta is the correct section, but I started it here so it is found easier. Might be a discussion in itself where this should be.

I see terminology in there Huzzah
I'll throw in a few threads as they come up on my list I'm sure there are hidden gems buried somewhere that I forgot about but this is a nice thread and thanks for organizing it.

EDIT IN: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=456691.0

This is really great, just added it to my bookmark lists and thanks for shorena and all the contributes made by forum members as well ... I was wondering if few other threads could be added to the list ,like for instance a thread for all the coders / developers / designers and etc ... If so, I'll be more than happy to collect information's regarding those

It basically contains few information's that I already listed on my topic , if shorena is okey with it and I can update my topic later and add information's from the link you just posted , that way we will have one topic instead of two and no one get confused .

I dont think its a problem to have more than one thread for the same topic, but I think that particular thread might not get updated anymore. Two or three threads for the same topic can avoid a too narrow view on things.

Very nice and helpful thread Shorena! Thanks for doing this. This will help a lot of people, new ones and us older ones. I have already seen many useful threads that I wasn't aware of before.

Is there a way to pin this thread at the top so it stays visible all of the time?

Thanks!

Really nice, I was looking for the original infamous 10000 pizza transaction. It turns it was 2 pizzas, so 5000 BTC for 1 pizza, not that bad of a deal :D
I would add to the list the best satoshi quotes. A lot of people come to this forum to learn about satoshi and are curious to see what he was like when he posted. A "Satoshi" section with the best threads and posts by him would be good imo.

Added to my watch list. :) Mind adding the most vital part in the forum: the list of rules in using this forum. In linking that particular thread here (though it is stickied in Meta already), one can still see it as a reminder of how to use this forum properly.

A sticky can be requested in meta AFAIK.

A "Satoshi" section with the best threads and posts by him would be good imo.

I like the idea, but I want to collect threads here not individual posts. I made one exception already, but only because the crucial information is not in the OP but a few posts down.

I have a few "whats your favorite satoshi quote" in my watch list, but maybe someone *wink wink* can start a thread with satoshi quotes I could link.

Made a meta note for a pin somewhere before this gets buried post in there to support or I guess critique if you really want to.

Perhaps under misc if not just as a post here if people read through the thread one day, it's not an old thread but it was worth a note on how many ways there are theoretically to create Bitcoin networks

Thanks for sharing this one, though what the topic no. 3 in this forum contains made me realize one thing: Satoshi may have leaked his identity in this forum one point in time. Topic no. 3 was deleted permanently due to that.

Glad you like it. There is a request in meta[1] asking for this to get stickied.

On a different note, if anyone has any good (and updated) altcoins/mining lists, overviews, guides etc. please let me know. I found some altcoins threads, but many of them are outdated (e.g. ~a year without update).

The map is updated to 2015 September, or are you looking more along the lines of services that accept bitcoin and altcoins in a listing.

(Also sorry didn't see the new forum software was already on the list)

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1235171.new#new

This guy is making a TL;DR version of the developer IRC logs. I always like to read them but sometimes I don't have enough time or I just don't understand what are they talking about. I think being able to read what the developers are talking to each other is great and yet another thing you would never be able to get on a non-open source project (specially of this magnitude)

Well BadBear said they would rather sticky something like this, not that they would actually sticky it. The request for it in meta died down quickly. The thread is a quick reference and its more usful as sticky, but its not my decision.

Yes, they are supposed to be regular things. The IRC meetings happen every Thursday and G1lius posts the "in layman's terms" summary every monday to Reddit and the mailing list as well as here. Maybe all of those should have their own consolidation thread which you can link to.

If you do plan on trying it, I have an entirely separate list of links I can put here but the one that I would most recommend is tracking the value of IPO investments in Bitcoin as its not going to be much longer till Bitcoin will have 1 Billion in Seed funding historically and people will need a way to find out what services are available in Bitcoin or will be available in Bitcoin in a nice organized matter after the initial Hype fades away :).

There is also a Chinese Version of this so if off board links are considered the language issue may come up under consideration criteria as well.

Thanks for the links, but I dont think I will do this. Some sites like bitcoin.org might never change, but others are less reliable. External links require regular maintenance and might be a security problem (e.g. hijacked sites)

I couldn't find this link in the OP although I could have missed it. It's a list of members listed by joining date. People researching Bitcoin's history could find it interesting. Sirius and Theymos show up on the first page together with a load of newbie accounts made by people who probably now wish they had stuck with Bitcoin instead of losing interest.

Silly thread that does not deserve this level

Have you read it?

Very nice attempt of linking all the required things under one roof.
Must be given enough reputation and contribution for this thread that will help the bitcoin community and bitcoin ecosystem to evolve more.

There is already a thread linked on OP about making faucets, looks pretty good and IMHO more comprehensible than Bitmaxz's thread . The bitcoin debit cards list is new though. The one I posted is in regards to making a rotator and not a faucet... it's two different things faucets are the place to earn fractions of satoshis directly from the websites and the rotator is the place faucets are linked like a chain for further compilation of faucets in a single place for easier continuous claiming....
And as to the link you provided regarding the complete list of avatar or social media campaigns, it's a nice thread although not in English and a quick search there, I found out not just one but many mistakes and the OP there seems to not update everything, for instance, my avatar campaign is still there and is stated on their language as active and with more slots which is completely wrong and need a lot of modifications

Yes, I will only link english, at least for now.

For one I cant judge the content if I dont understand the language, which would limit me to german and english. I also can not activly search for topics to make a whole section viable. E.g. I moved the pizza thread from marketplace to history once I had enough threads (2-3) to open the history section. I cant do that for a section where I dont understand the language. If someone wants to do a similar collection for a certain language I would certainly link the threads.

  • Dogie's Hardware Guides (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=958599.0) overview thread

First one is probably better set to the actual .xz file and mine better to link to whichever is the latest guide, or at least recent. S7 for example https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1194785.

Maybe include this one, helpful for faucet owners: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1200700.0 . Hoping it was not already in the list.
DL link here is not working: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1003570.0 , if you have someone who has a copy of the script maybe post it and link directly to that.
Wasn't this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1206977.0 supposed to be a secret?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=74046 is outdated
And this one is an interesting thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=7253.0 , might be included in history if it hasn't been already.
Thats all for now
P.S: Sorry if I asked/suggested something that was already answered/listed.
Edit 2: Nearly forgot, maybe link forum ad auction thread as well(updated every month)

It was.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=74046 is outdated

Why? The last edit was two days ago.

Nice thread, but SgtSpike is not really mainting the OP.

It doesn't look like the OP has been watching his own thread. He still has 0BTC total lost. I luckily haven't lost any coins yet. Redundancy.
I'm still watching it.  I'm just too lazy to add it all up and everyone has stopped using the format I specified at the beginning of the thread to keep a running total.

P.S: Sorry if I asked/suggested something that was already answered/listed.
Edit 2: Nearly forgot, maybe link forum ad auction thread as well(updated every month)

Its in every thread already (search for "advertise here"). That should be enough.

But the last posts are interesting to watch, and well laszlo's thread hasn't been "updated" in a long time too. AFAIK the purpose of the thread was for everyone to post how much they lost and add it to the last sum of lost amount and post it.

And arguably the best option is search.  Most questions have been asked before.  Not all some are unique.

But a suprising amount have been asked multiple times.  Some threads are so big you can't read them all to, and I think some of us realize this. Look at like S3 thread I mean massive if you started now to read to current.

But search is one good option for most questions.

IMHO thats the difficult part about good guides. Keep them short and simple enough without leaving out whats needed. FAQs are probably better for most cases or have subsections you can jump to directly.

There isn't afaik. I remember trying to find a compiled list of all SN addresses but with no luck (I wasn't trying very hard though). That's why I think it would be useful to list them here (if there is a reliable data anywhere) or in separate thread and link that thread here.

So yes, it would likely involve doing some (a lot?) research. I'll try to get on it if I have more time.

He was just huge on project.  I from first time he mentioned it in hardware said he did not stand much of a chance.  He thought he was going to make some new solar power panal.... for cheap... that no one else had did.  He just would link to ton's of white papers on technology.  He had 3-4 posts of it on forums.

He promised a coin in a week, and coin would help pay for his new solar..... guess what coin never came.  I wished him luck... he said he didnt need it that he would be successful.  I hate being wrong sometimes but to think you will make a altcoin and create a solar farm from coin..... this is why so many coins are pump/dump.  Luckily this coin never even made it to pump/dump.  The coin never made it.

Any new information? (Bumping back to the top).

Most recent additions are

- Trust score - exact algorithm.
- IRC Meetings -> 2016-01-21

and maybe some more threads, I add them whenever I find one that I think is interesting, but I dont keep a record.

  • Wallets (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1213406.0) - overview thread for all kinds of wallets.

This thread seems like a superficial overview of the wallets, and don't really explain the pros and cons of the wallets in depth. As in, his description of Electrum is simply "Electrum isn't a full-node wallet, so it will save disk space for you. It's also a lightweight wallet
which saves on CPU and RAM usage". Not to mention contradictory parts

Quote
I will start with the Desktop ones. They might be the safest option for anyone

...

Next, mobile wallets. They are safer than desktop ones, but don't store too much Coins in them.

Quote
  • Mycelium: Mycelium is the best wallet for mobile devices...
  • Bitcoin Wallet: Bitcoin Wallet is the best way to go...

Then there's also the recommendation without explanation why those wallets are the best at the end.

I do realize this might be the only thread here listing the various types of wallets out there, but it doesn't seem that informative to me.

I'd like to nominate this list of bitcoin scam sites (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1326821.0) by minifrij.

I've also noticed some typos

Emtpy blocks - stats, reasons, overall discussion thread. --- Empty

SPV Mining - why its bad or good (discussion) and what do against it. --- it's

Collateral why you shouldnt loan without it --- shouldn't

Well, that would be true were it spam, but no message was sent to me for the two topics that I'd started being removed, and at the same time my signature was modified without my permission .

It's trust abuse by a moderator.

Yes. Very useful. If half of it is seen today, i am sure one can earn a lot bitcoins. Lot many projects are introduced, many required to solve the captchas, and gamble are introduced in the links everyone. I taught to solve the captcha to my spouse. She was very interested in it and said that she would find out more sites to earn more bitcoins. All the best and good to go as well.

No, not exactly. They were supposed to put a stop to the redundant questions that keep being asked and abused by signature spammers even though the answers already exist. Regarding this thread, I was planning on doing a *update* to it and posting it myself as self-moderated (not necessarily stickied). However, if you are able to find the time to update this one, then there's likely no need (even though I'd still suggest a *restart* with self-moderated thread).

This is an attempt to collect and order every single important, useful or interesting thread for bitcointalk.org.
Noble attempt. But problem with this is new users 98% of time are creating new threads to ask, its easier compared to actually enter this guide which they are not sure will find answer and read through it. So its easier to ask. It will help ~2% of users tho, which reads this kind of topics.

Anyway good job.

I believe you should add on the top of the list , the hottest threads based on the number of replies and views It got by the way , It won't be an easy task for you though.

Added thanks. Due to the forums age I dont think views and replies is helping. Many old threads have a very large number of replies (>>200 pages worth), but are no longer relevant. I know the list gets big, but I try to use key words in the describtion so one can ctrl + f through it.

1. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1596316.0
2. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1045967.0

I found these topics interesting because the first one refers to PoW altcoins and the second to ICO Projects and Crypto Platforms. Both of them are self moderated by the same OP and are being updated regularly. Looking at your list I didn't find something like the above topics and as I saw in your ToDo list you want more altcoin material. If you believe that would be important for the altcoins section then add it in your list.
