Title: Did someone fat-finger a 400 Bitcoin mistake into Poloniex when buying Digibyte?
Post by: americanpegasus on October 22, 2015, 09:42:07 AM
I was trying to examine and understand the recent volume/pump with Digibyte but the damn chart is ridiculous.  Apparently a few days ago someone bought up a massive portion of the entire order book and spent a metric fuck ton of Bitcoin in the process.

It just didn't make any sense no matter how I sliced it.... What possible motivation would someone have of creating such a temporary price spike... Then I realized it.   :o

Somebody forgot a zero.. Instead of putting in a buy order of everything below .0000012 bitcoins they must have attempted to buy everything below .000012 bitcoins, an entire order of magnitude difference.

I don't know who you are, buy holy shit.  A $100,000 typo is cause for sympathy to anyone.  Ouch.  :-\

I definitely don't mean to imply any endorsement of Digibyte with this post.  As far as I can tell, Digibyte is undergoing a pump, and I don't deal in those.

That could just be a pump, not a fat finger. The price is higher than a few weeks ago.

Makes more sense as a 'fat finger' incident than a pump, IMHO.

Somebody is trying to pump Digibyte in poloniex and other exchanges. I don't think it is an error when all the exchanges experienced the same pump.

That wasn't a fat finger. I started watching the pump after DGB went over 100 sats. It all happened within a half hour and would have probably kept going if it weren't for a 50+ btc sell wall thrown up at the peak.

If the price rises in many exchanges, it is just a organized pump, not by mistake, but by design. Let's see how long it will last.

Nothing to c here another Monero hater trying to tell everyone else  why other coins are bad, and it was all fake, lame, and YES WE ARE JEALOUS.

This thread is on Buttcoin, what moron linked it there?  It was clearly a pump.  They pulled money out of both Eth + BTS at the same time and pumped DGB for no reason even though the odds of anyone chasing a DGB pump is around 0.

If the price started running amok on one exchange due to a bad bot fat finger.... wouldn't that cause the other exchanges to rise too due to arbitrage opportunities?

Nah.  It was intentional and most of that 400 BTC buy was 1 person or group buying their own coins.  A sudden parabolic price rise and massive volume is a great way to get attention towards your pump.

No disrespect to the DGB developers or community, but yeah, obviously this is a pump.  Reality is if any alt-coin is doing anything but trending towards zero, there is some market manipulation going on.  There is no serious investment in alt-coins.  No one wants or needs alt-coins for anything.  No one wants MAID or ETHER until more development is done and they are actually useful.  Online drug dealers don't even want DSH or XMR.  We are playing an elaborate game of make believe.
