Title: Clocks Go Back Tonight in the UK
Post by: jackg on October 24, 2015, 10:18:16 PM
Is there really a point in us adjusting our clocks to go back an hour. I feel it is unnecessary, the time should be fixed.

It's unnecessary to do it, it's all automatic nowadays ;)

It's a pain in the arse, but there's nothing we can do about it. Time isn't under our control.
Besides, an extra hour in bed. Can't go wrong.

Yes, there is a point. It is to make the sun stay out longer of course.

I think it is unnecessary to use clocks at all!
Time shouldn't be measured... everyone should go to work, to sleep, to have lunch, dinner and so on when he/she wants, not when clocks "force" us to do things. This is my opinion. ;)

It technically shortens it.
It makes the day/sun come earier, I'll give you that.
Arn't we at the same time as most of western Europe now or are we two hours different instead of one?

AFAIK we're now in the GMT timezone (most of Europe), where as before we were in BST (British Summer Time, GMT+1).

GMT or Greenwich Mean Time. Greenwich is in London, Thus, we are always at GMT +0:00. We are always at GMT+00:00

I'm just going off of what Google tells me about each time, but from my understanding we transfer to BST (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=gmt+time&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=3BctVvU_geNRzbWbSA#q=bst+time) when the clocks go forward, then transfer back to GMT (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=gmt+time&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=3BctVvU_geNRzbWbSA#) when the clocks go back.

Clock's going back not only in UK :) I think that it's no point in doing so.

I was only aware of it in the UK. Where else do they go back. It is not really necessary anymore, we have few farms and farmers are mainly using computers and all have strong lights.

I'm a 100% night owl so I disapprove, but I can see where people are coming from when they moan about being squashed by trucks with the dark mornings. In my view morning people are total wrong uns who need taking out, but maybe I'm in a minority.

At least time is uniform these days. In the old days Bristol was 18 minutes ahead of London. It was only sorted out when the railways arrived.
