Title: laptop into miner
Post by: reminesjoseph on October 26, 2015, 12:54:43 AM
Is it possible and worth the effort? If i turned my laptop into a miner only, would I be able to generate enough BTC to do anything with?

Based on your other thread, I see that you are new and looking to learn. You can learn the basics of mining with your laptop.
It is possible but not worth the effort if you're looking to solve blocks. There's a much higher chance that you break your hardware compared to solving a block.

Im pretty new, and looking to learn. I have looked at miners online and they're all really expensive. I'm looking for a more cost effective route.

Well yoou could try the GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer ( USB Miner ), It's very cheap but it won't make you any money to be honest but it's good for a start to learn some basics...

Nope, I tested it back in 2014 using Litecoin earned 3 cents and had to send it back under warranty
Of course it was free to try since it was relatively unknown then he-he but it's not worth it.

No. Don't even try it. Yiu'll only burn your laptop plus the elctricity cost. It's not worth it. If you really want to mine on your own, gather money and buy your own mining rigs  :D

Offcourse you can mine alot of other altcoins, but dont expect to get rich, if you pick the right one, there's allways a possibility at profit, but he, a dump is more likely than profit. Do it to get yourself known with the ins and outs, not to get rich :)

SHA256, the prtocol of bitcoin, isnt feasible anymore with a cpu or gpu, you need asics :)

The most cost effective route is to buy an actual miner (ASIC).
Your laptop will catch on fire way before you see a single satoshi.

Not to mention any of these suggested USB sticks or other miners could use a RPI for 35 bucks.  So no risk to laptop, running it 24x7.   And some linux is easier to use with certain miners.  No driver issues some have with windows.

But no day's a laptop will make any money are over.  Gpu/Cpu are over most lose money from running these mining forums.    High intensity on a laptop is not good 24x7.   You will thank us if you don't go this route.

Not a good idea. This will force your laptop to work harder and will shorten the laptops life span. Laptops are not designed to this kind of work and stress.

And that's not mentioning that, beside possibly damaging your laptop, you would probably do so before you break the dust limit payout on any pool. That laptop would be better off running a USB Stick like the GekkoScience usb stick and run the lottery with it.

Laptop do fine as controllers.

Why people still wanted to mine with laptops, also isn't a good idea with normal pcs, laptop will be broken in few days, isn't made for high load work.

Why is since most people have one.  Even say college kids on budget, or other situations.   So just very popular.

Why 3/4th don't search laptop mining I can't explain it.  It seems like a lot of people think they are going to find a anwser other then no by asking.
