hey coins are up to 310!

Hey coins are wild today :D

Today's high was: $318.72 which is pretty amazing.  It dipped to around 310, but I'm having trouble being sad with a number over 300.  I thought it would take a few weeks to get  over 300 hurdle.... nope just a day. 

My hope is we don't drop under 300 though if some decide to sell a few coins.

Have to say I expected some resitance around $300 but it seems to have blasted through, must be a pull back at some point? This will be a very interesting difficulty period.  :) I think we are due for a biggeeee.

Coin price is strong and getting stronger, we finally got over the dip that XT caused.  I think we'll see sub-5% for most of this winter, 70G network difficulty coming soon!  :-X

if btc wants to average 10% while diff averages 5% it works for me.

when coins were at 1000 usd the best gear was about 2 watts and diff was tiny.

we can sit and argue that btc was overvalued back in nov of 2013 and we can sit and argue coins are undervalued at 310 in nov of 2015.

truth is the history of btc is too short to really get an idea of the true worth of a coin.

I would like to see coins doing a nice upward move for the next two months out pacing the diff.

An amazing thing my two batch 1 s-3's are still pulling in a profit (2.5 cent power costs)

For optimum BTC after power cost, I had to turn UP the max voltage on my SP20s with the last diff change.  They at now at 0.71V (1.4T-1.5T each).  I never imagined I would be running these so high after 10 months of mining.  I even made ROI during the last diff.  I'm not complaining!

Just kicking myself for not having begged, stealed or borrowed when we were down at $220.... Oh well will just have to settle for cranking the Miners up to max and generate what I can now.

I was very close last round. I hope this time I can find the right range. Waiting picks to open.

The price is getting solid again and looking at the Press Section of the forum covers on the economist launches of Bitcoin exchanges and the overall market sentiment leans toward a bullish market and in turn a higher mining difficulty.
The picks and the settlement this round will be fun to watch.

bitmain sold out of batch 2 and 3 s7s during the price run up.  if they get delivered as promised i think we can expect to see over 4% this time around

Sold a fourth coin today.   got over 325.

all told I sold off 4 coins  1200 for the four.   My power cost will be taken care of until next year.


lets see I burn 2400 plus 500 = 3000 in house that is 72 kwatts a day or 2160 kwatts in a month about 225 plus 87  for the hosted unit

so 312 a month  so I have my power costs taken care of for 4 months.

Lets see us go up and over 400.

I am just amazed coinbase is currently 336 on price.  I mean we are over a hundred dollars  higher then where we sit forever.  That is just a huge jump.

And difficulty did not just sky rocket... so it's like to fronts with great news.  I just am loving being a miner right now.   It has been a interesting time to say the least.

I think the price isn't causing an increase in difficulty because most likely people didn't power off their miners, they just sold them. So they were running the entire time by someone with cheaper electricity.

Even someone powering up an old S1 isn't going to increase the hashrate at all.

I would agree on the selling of miners.  They just loose value so quick anymore you cant sit them in a corner and not use or each day they loose a little value.  All my old miners I have sold. 

I figure they are each in cheap or "free" electricity places and are running still today on a lot of them.   Some sit and wait till winter but I find this crazy with how they lose value to sit till winter for heat.

Yes, I think the only miners sitting and collecting dust are those 30Gh/s Butterfly labs and those USB Stick miners. Everything else is still hashing away.

My S1 and S3 are still turned off.  Electricity is so expensive here in so. Cal. that it is almost impossible to mine at a profit.  When it gets cold I'll turn them back on for heat and because I really enjoy mining, but for now it still isn't cost effective for me to run anything except my little usb "farm".

Why don't you just sell them here or on eBay?

While I know this thread is for difficulty changes, and picks remain closed, I just have to comment:

This is stunning in my opinion. Clearly over the last 60 days, BTC price increases have outpaced difficulty increases. This is a huge surprise compared to the previous year.

I have to think this will lure some latent mining hardware to restart as they might now turn a running profit, even if not really ROI more.

Yes mining is the most profitable now then anytime in the past 11 months,.

There is a even bigger effect though.  Since people mined during that time all that they held from mining now went up in value.  So it not only helps furture earnings on mining, but past earnings get bigger if minner did not sell coins.

So it's a win/win.  For all the hard it is to be a miner now day's this is a breath of fresh air.

Without a doubt their is a some historically interesting context here, one is that the last mining rush left a lot of home-miners burned out from the constant difficulty increases and less valued units. Some moved to cloudmining and were burned as well leading towards less variation in my opinion.

This increase in difficulty will in contrast have fewer independent miners and more consolidated groups raking in the profit and it might be some time till the home-users pick up on this wave again.

In other words it's now paying off to have slogged through for the dedicated miner :).

Why would I want to do that?  I enjoy mining from a technical and tinkering perspective and I still believe that the S3 is the best machine on the market for the average Joe.

My S1 boards are going to gekkoscience in support of the pod miner they are developing, and I'm saving that chassis and controller for when they develop and release full boards.

My S3 will get used all winter again as a solo mining lottery ticket.

The $100 or so I would get for both of them wouldn't be worth it to get rid of them, there's nothing out there better suited for a miner like me.

and I have sold 1 more coin 

and look at that pacmic 3, already 95% in, should be done by midmonth at the latest (3-4 weeks earlier than I expected).
if all goes accordingly, it was pretty sweet if someone instabought btc on coinbase for $$, then bought pacmic3 at 0.66

yeah 9.99 btc gets back  about 10.35 btc but  I paid 220 to 250 for the 9.99   say 2350 usd


I sold 5 coins for 1530

 leaving me 5.35 btc at a cost of 800

if I cash the 5.35 at 330 that = 1765.50   which is a 965 profit

I was thinking about this issue a few weeks back but then it didn't look so busy yet.

Perhaps we should do an early round - maybe blocks 300 to 500 - for users who participated in the contest at least 5 times or something like that. Another option would be to give priority if you use the same spot from the previous round. Yet another option would be to charge a small amount (0.001?) for an early entry and add it to the pool. Or some combination of these.

The problem is of course that any extra rules increase the bureaucracy and this should be simple and fun. Anyone has any ideas how to make this more fair for more people in various time zones etc - please share.

One thing to remember though is that this is pretty much a lottery. We've had many cases where the winner didn't pick their favorite spot, where the diff moved a few spots within the last hours before adjustment, etc. Due to the inherently random nature of mining this is much more a game of luck than a game of skill.

I agree with the more complicated part - not with "your game" - I think it's everyone's game :). That's why I'm asking for ideas, maybe someone can come up with something interesting here.

maybe it is time for participants to pitch in 0.01 or 0.005 (or a buck or two) or limit the final to $30 in btc, for example.

yeah my idea is close to yours. make 81 ranges   -10 to +10  



  then use randomnumber.org to assign ranges to the entries.

if you get assigned 0 you get .2 prize if you get any other range you get .1 prize

end entries  at block 1000.

since all ranges will get picked randomly you can put your name in from block 0 to block 1000.

if we don't get 81 names some ranges end up rollover.

I really like the idea of slowing down I was starting to get scared on first one.  I really don't want to see 5-10... I like level under 5.... 2 is my favorite as I use it as best case on most of my ROI.   Worst case I do a lot of numbers... but best case I normally just do 2 and if it's under I am extremely happy.

I'm afraid of Avalon and Bitmain both making gear at same time.   The good thing is our overall hashrate is pretty big so it's getting harder and harder to do a huge percent jump.  I wonder what it will be like in a year or even two if hashrate will be even more steady.

I know I said it's a game of chance but still completely random may be a bit too far. I'd like to try to maintain at least the illusion of choice  ;D.

We could allow multiple picks for the same range, maybe up to five. Then the timing wouldn't matter so much but the prize might need to be split between multiple winners.

Another thing we could consider is limiting participation to Full Members or Sr. Members and up (an exception can be made for former participants).

I've only played the "Game" a couple of times and cannot see much wrong with it as it stands. We were asleep in the UK when picks opened this time but I knew that was going to be the case, could have stayed up but chose not to. For me all part of the game and I think it would be a great pity to remove choice, and let's remember that even with first pick this is already a game of chance.  :)

So yes more slots would be fine, so long as they get filled. How about a combination of smaller slots and opening picks earlier so that early voters have less information but first choice.

 right now -10 to +10 IS ABOUT  80 slots

-10 to + 10 would be 200 slots.

realistically at block 600 -10 or +10 would be esay to rule out so your logical picks would be  well under the 200 between -10 to +10

right now -10 to -2 are very unlikely so between -2 and +10 are only around 48 ranges under the new rules it would be more like 120 ranges.

I like it. We can simplify the picks too. Instead of expecting +3.01 to +3.25, +3.26 to +3.50 etc the picks can be simply:

+3.0 phil
+3.1 suchmoon
+3.2 edonkey's cat

etc.

which would easily and intuitively translate to:

+3.00 to +3.09
+3.10 to +3.19
+3.20 to +3.29

etc.

Basically you guess the percentage to one decimal place A.B and you win if the actual percentage ends up being anything that starts with your number i.e. A.Bx

Just need to figure out the 0.00 situation. Perhaps have the whole -0.09 to +0.09 range as a single pick. This one would have a higher chance to win.

I think they are. It's a bit less convenient on the negative side since you have to remember that -0.2 goes to -0.11 and not to -0.29 but we're less likely to use those negative ranges so we should be ok.

Why not open picks early & close them late. There are a lot more picks with 0.1 and you only have one shot. So you would then have the additional gamble of choosing between going in early to get the slot you want v waiting for more information before choosing? I think delaying the start might make for a bigger rush on opening?

price has jumped from 231 to 338  that is 46.32%

diff has jump from 56,957,648,455 to around 66,000,000,000 that is    15.87%

So diff could move real hard or maybe not very interesting time to be a miner.

The price is what surprises me so much.  We are doing really good in a sort period of time. I thought we would see a big sell off at 300... and we saw a little but not massive it kept going up in value.

Now to be looking close to 240 is a pretty big deal.  If we hit 345 is my number I now want to see.  That will be 50 percent jump from 230 in not a very long time at all.  It's a good time to be a miner.

For the difficulty to move by something like 10-20% you would need 50-100 PH/s of hardware to be deployed and that isn't easy or cheap. With the uncertainty of the block reward halving coming up in just a few months (July-ish next year) we will probably see the difficulty lagging behind this price rally and we will probably see a price correction too. Or we'll all be rich, I'm fine with that too  ;D

I'm thinking the same were getting to a point there is a lot of hash in the network.   So it's much harder to do big jumps.  For example we at one time got 20+ jumps long ago.... for 20+ it would take a ton of miners and massive ivestment.

In regards to pick claims I think that a range decrease of 0.1% is a good idea, however if the price appreciates at the rate it has during the next few rounds keeping 0.25% would work as old miners are likely to return to operation and the old miners becoming operational again increases the  variances if these prices remain and sustain themselves for a while.

I just want over 400 and I'm happy :) for the moment. 230 to 400 is a huge jump is a pretty small period of time.

With 370-420~ right now, even my S1 are good income and seeing how hard it is to get any more miner currently, i'm pretty happy i got them. I'm just worried at what will happen to the difficulty, if we're looking at a series of +5-7% for a few retarget, this double return from miner won't last very long.

That said looking at this pattern wise it would seem to be accurate to calculate this round around 2951 USD with the collapse price being 1/5th of the peak, were rising up like 2011 and 2013 and we broke through Barrier range 3 just now that's the resistance wall to $700 USD so in my opinion we are not stopping anytime soon (admits to loading money into exchanges), miners just need to find blocks and people will buy em.
That said because I am keeping consistent $464.64 USD on Coindesk as of this post difficulty estimate still at 7% no adjustment to mining tonight.

The difficult can't take huge jumps like that without hardware being actually built first.

For the hashrate to double will take at least 3 months to 6 months.

It seems to be making a 7% jump with all the ancient hardware being plugged back in. I kind of expected there would be more of those but probably...

1) large farms that have cheap power were using the 1W+ hardware even at $230 so no change here
2) large farms that didn't have cheap power already scrapped the 1W+ and don't have anything to plug back in so no change here

I was expecting more old mining hardware to chip in myself but your right mining farms likely kept them offline put them in storage or just plain got rid of them for scrap.
That said I'm sure some hash will start entering into the ring sooner than later as people unpack and re-configure into pools.
(Like Phillips 1 sidehack compac stick which could be mining for all I know ^_^)

Kind of sound like people are just selling all of their older hardware now, insane how even S3's are being grabbed at the prices i was getting S5 last month.

A thing we might see is less miners being sold by manufacturers, they might mine with it for now. I'm guessing they will be more inclined to just sell what they need, a small amount to pay then what they need to move.

Even Bitmain only sold "limited amount" (their words) for B4 and B5 S7.

Price certainly took a big dive this afternoon/evening as people cash in on the >$460 price.  I see $394 right now, hopefully ~$400 will be the new norm and we can build from there.  There's going to be a lot of disappointed people if we fall all the way back to the mid-200s.

And since I sold almost every coin the drop is not so bad for me.

It's back over $400 again and rising.  I really think (hope) that 400 is the new floor.  We should see some significant network growth if that is the case, but not just attributed to price - cooler north hemisphere temps are certainly contributing to the increase in network hash.

We just need a steady slow rise now.  To go from 230 to 400 as floor is pretty nice.   I think the slow rise will help build some walls.

When we hit 500 so many auto-sales, and people  selling just was not enough buy walls to support it.  It's still a great increase overall though.

Today is the 10th so I keep expecting to see a lot of Avalon hash added, but so far not near what I was expecting. I mean Mr. Lee was getting like 3 PH he announced, but I have not heard about sales yet in thread so I'm wondering if they are a little behind on shipping or making.j

Price is still better then the 230 but taking a little bit of a dive to 359.75 on coinbase so around 20 dollars down.

I keep expecting that too, but I'm wondering if like a lot of us, even the big players are maxed or close to maxed on power consumption and have to take some amount of equipment offline to put newer stuff on, so instead of seeing massive spikes, we're seeing a slow crawl with higher efficiency backing it.

Ive actually had really good luck with it.  Very good luck with miners on it compared to forums I normally get more off it.  But I do only sale my old miners on there a new miner I agree is a lot of liability compared to one been used for 6 months.

People tend to pay more when paypal is involved even though it can be a pain.

I really understand the concerns about selling the S7 on ebay. The buyer's protection is easily abusable, even if the item is marked as no returns, if a buyer with ill intents buy the miner, they can buy it, mine with it for a while and then file a item not as described and return the miner to get a refund.

Even though they may simply be a very small vocal minority, its probably a good thing to keep in mind. Not sure if there is a way around that but some users reported this.

Basically without having some sort of "as is" agreement, the seller would take all the risks since the buyer can decide to abuse the system to return the miner if the miner drop in value.

selling an s-7 for 2900 sounds good but the buyer may mine for 30 days and they say it broke return it working and basically you the seller are

Actually selling with a reasonable return policy (14 days is minimum, soon to be increased to 30 days) is better than "no returns". Yes, you have the 14 or 30 day risk, but outside of that you have a chance that eBay seller protection will work. With a "no return" policy you are almost guaranteed to lose the dispute if buyer claims "not as described" and I think that goes up to 45 days.

I've had mixed success with eBay, got a few of miners returned but overall I think it's not that bad. Never sold anything above $1000 though.

I think the key is it being older gear the latest and greatest I think a lot of the scammers will want as it's the greatest return for them.  I had really good luck with my A1's and S4's when updating gear and getting rid older generations.   

Granted I took more risk with ebay vs forum sale.  But it ended up successful for me.   The one Dragon 1.5 weighed almost 50 pounds.... that was safest one I ever felt knowing they were not going to ship that beast back.

I did have pretty good luck selling most gear but at times 3 or 5 returns out of 10 items.

This is when sticks were a hot seller on ebay.

I must have sold 500 to 800 on ebay. Most people kept them.

I was lucky in that I was selling them into the bull run of fall of 2013.  so people kept them.

I did a 4800 dollar sale on ebay but it was silver  bars purchase at 14 bucks an oz sold at 30 an oz  and that was into the silver bull run up to 49 an oz so that buyer kept them.

Sent them registered mails as it was the only way to insure them.

I think the buyer would have tried to return them if the market crashed.

Yes its never a good idea to sell any miners on eBay. I remember back in Feb-March 2014, many people were returning GPUs because within a month's period mining became highly unprofitable. Instead of taking a loss, they just said that the item is broken and got a refund.

Now its even worse because to compete with Amazon. eBay returns are shipping free. So if you sell a miner, pay $50 to ship, and they want to return the item, you have to pay the shipping fee back, $50. So you are out shipping both ways.

Damn! Looks like somebody powered up their own farm today. Difficulty is spiking up to new highs.
