Title: So, I have some bitcoins... ...now what?
Post by: Threshold on June 05, 2011, 04:50:42 PM
I am basically wondering what I could do with bitcoins.  I don't buy/sell drugs or other illegal stuff.  I don't have a big international money exchange need...  I don't live in a third world country that doesn't have a stable economy...

...so what now?

I am amused with the idea of the currency, and cryptography has always been an interest of mine -- but so far I don't see an advantage of bitcoins for me.

Is there anything similar to eBay that uses bitcoins?  I'd give that a try if it exists...

or you can exchange it to USD but that kind of defeats the purpose of bitcoin as a currency

I do live in a third world country and don't have a stable economy, so give it to me.

Thank you all for your replies.

Considering how unstable the bitcoin is (its value has changed greatly over the past weeks and months), is there any plan to change the processing charge from 0.01 to something lower?

Also, I thought I had read that the processing charge was optional -- but when I try to use the bitcoin client for a Mac, it won't allow me to transfer cash without it.  I receive an error message that says:  Error: This transaction requires a transaction fee of at least 0.01 because of its amount, complexity, or use of recently received funds

What are the amount, complexity, or recently received funds rules that my transaction may have broken?

Thanks again.

If you just received the funds, you must use the transfer fee or if it is a small amount you must use the transfer fee...

Seems pretty self explanatory in the error message

Craven, I didn't know if the fee was for sending too large an amount or too small an amount -- that part wasn't self explanatory from the error.

Also, I understand the part about sending money too quickly -- but what I don't know is how soon is too soon.  EG, must one wait an hour?  a day?  a week?

If you live in US you should damn bet your currency is going to be so instable as latin america in few years.
Dollar is doomed to fail and that was way before bitcoins ever exists.

u can buy options on more bitcoins or use them in dark pools LOL
I clicked on above vendor link and  was amused how many financial services/exchanges/derivatives/markets there are for bitcoins relative to how many products u can buy for them.

In reality you will wait for the next hype wave to go out and unload them at a profit (hopefully) to what's known as a 'greater fool'

Please note i am a big supporter of the bitcoin theory and future, but as of NOW they are little more than a gambling tool, it would be foolish to kid yourself otherwise.

Gotcha, thanks AbelsFire.

That, I suppose, is another problem with bitcoins -- that their value is so unstable that the cost can't just be posted on a site for very long before it isn't what the buyer or seller envisioned.

At some point I plan to make a cron job that updates the exchange rate every five minutes or so automatically. Eventually the volatility will go down if more people start using Bitcoin to buy and sell things rather than speculating.

That's right, I'm just doing my part to promote an excellent Bitcoin publication but I'm not affiliated in any way. BitBrew and The Bitcoin List are mine, though.  :)
