Title: Sportsbooks 101
Post by: bitcoinprofit on November 01, 2015, 06:20:45 PM
Below is a list of my thoughts on sports books
Some may feel that these are obvious.
All of this is just advice/suggestions on how to manage your gambling journey.

The following should be self-explanatory.

General Strategy

1: Shop around for the best value.

2: Work out a staking plan. General rule of thumb is 5% of bankroll (I use 3-5% and sometimes 8%)

3: Never, ever, chase!

4: Pay close attention to team news.

5: Stick to singles or doubles.

6: Choose which markets you bet on carefully.

7: In any given season you will have good spells and bad spells and you should not get carried away with either.

8: Stick to what you know and don't bet on leagues you haven't been following.

9: Keep records of all your bets.

10: Know when to cut your losses. (i.e. Don't go into debt)  *Dealing with a gambling problem? Learn the warning signs and how to get help.

The MOST important thing about sports betting is having good bankroll management. U can pick all the winners u want if your not disciplined u wont make it in the long run.

#4 is a really good tip. it may seem extremely obvious but even myself when starting out, I got burned a few times just by not checking on the status of a team/player. Its pretty bad to go big on a game only to find out you didn't have all the information you needed. Good tips my man, a great set of guidelines for any potential sports bettor.

you mean there is no ways to make money out of betting on sports in a long term? if yes i have to disagree, if you have a lot of knowledge about sports that you bet on you can become rich out of betting for sure

U can def make $ in sports betting in the long term but pretty much all pro betters stick to a 1 or 2 sports. U see touts all the time selling picks to every major sport and there is no way they are +ev in every sport. Stick to what u know the most about just cause NFL reg season is over doesnt mean u should start firing away on NHL type of thing

Nice OP bitcoinprofit.

I agree with pretty much every hint/tip you've listed. Gambling noobs should adhere to something like this. We all like to have fun betting but without being careful it's easy to get yourself into financial difficulty.

Also something that is very important in sports betting is make sure u get the best of the #. If a NFL game is -3 then jumps to -5 its pretty -ev to take the -5. Look to live bet the game or just pass it all together. Theres a reason the # moved and if u dont have the best just pass

Thanks for the tips OP. I still haven't done any sports betting, but I'd like to give it a try. I think #9: "Keep records of all your bets, " is a really good idea, in any long term betting. That way you can always know if you are ahead of not, instead of some vague guess.

Play on your own, if you're passionate about a game, you'll be able to pick the right bets yourself, paying people for tips is as stupid as it gets.

PS: Don't know where the google link in your sig leads to but I am not finding out.

Agree completely in the lack of meaningfulness of chasing or trying to come close to or make profit overall... Also I consider it best to look for a point better sportbook to play against the least possible spread.

These are all good advices, I would add one more.

Always be patient and in control. If you don't see anything to bet on, then just don't bet, or don't bet for betting sake.

You are correct!

I agree with this advice

I think it is better to bet on low and sure odds than bet on very high odds. Sure it's nice to hit a high odd bet, but i tend to build more profit on low odd wins. It's like someone asked you which you would take, a 90% chance to win $100 or a 30% chance to win $150. I'd go for the $100 anyday.

strategy 6 and 8 are one of my rules and they help me stay on top of my game..

and incase of a loss don't break even try betting on a different day or you will lose everything

Do you have examples of the low and "sure" odds that you play?

Yes, look for odds about which teams play which, follow the game..Most sports betting sites let you play in bets on the run, that means, you can bet while the game is going on. Lets take football for example, at the kick off time, there is an bet to go Draw at halftime with lets say 4.4 odds. As minutes pass, and scores don't move, odds will drop. Come 42 minutes, both teams play defensively, no one attacking. It's safe to take the Draw bet at this point with even 1.4 odds, since you see both teams parking the bus. It's a sure bet that is gonna win, and it has low odds..

sports book betting is very good but for that first you should have knowledge how to do analyse the game , history of the teams and their performance , after all this calculation you should also have knowledge about the latest development of the team. then only you can do a good bet on that match and win.

I am using directbet.eu for live betting.

Ah a fellow sports book bettor..A big plus of analyzing the game is if you have played the game as well. As you would be able how to spot tactics and formations employed by both teams and be able to know if the momentum shifts from a play or what not. I'm a big Chelsea fan, since the DiMatteo days when he was a player. They played a very attractive attacking style of play that is waay different from today's playing style. So, to be able to distinguish how teams shift their playing style during the game, and how formations affect which playing style they are gonna be playing is a big plus. And usually that information comes from experience of playing in the said formation.

I don't know about. It is not confirmed that is has much to do with team effectiveness. T
hen following this logic -  betting on Barcelona after that revelations about Messi's tax fraud would be a bad idea.
But I didn't see that problem interfere with his play at all.

Prior to the tip-off, TMZ and ESPN were reporting that Clipper’s holder Donald Sterling had made ethnically insensitive comments. At a point in the middle of the 2014 NBA playoffs, the LA Clippers were thought to beat the Warriors by 2 points. And although Clippers were favorites, they lost the match by 21 points. So it is wise to bet on big distractions. So I guess it could be sport specific...

When i bet, especially in football, id like to look at the head to head record of both teams before making a bet. Usually id go with a +2 handicap on the weaker team if they're kinda evenly matched for better odds. Sometimes i also go big or go home like when i bet on a -3 handicap on the Spain Lichtenstein game.  ;D

These are some fantastic guidelines to follow in betting. I can't stress enough how important it is to shop for different lines when sports betting. Always find the best possible value for the team you're betting on.this coupled with proper bankroll management, to me you're the most important parts of sports betting.

Yeah it is, but really what's the point of necroing an old post from 2015 that no one replies to? It's like you just remembered you had a thread like this and replied to it.
Though, it would be a good read for newbies, but generally a new topic would have been better and just linked this one on it.
