Title: Bitcoin symbol accepted for Unicode
Post by: unamis76 on November 03, 2015, 09:35:25 AM
Looks like we have been accepted for the next revision of Unicode! Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be news or a thread about this... Only a twitter (https://twitter.com/ken_lunde/status/661351862155669506) announcement, but I bet this will be discussed a lot in the next few hours :)

What do you all think? I think this is great news!

i can only think likeyou,  this is great, many great news lately are coming all together, and they are actually doing something to the market, instead of being just vaporware

i hope in the future, this symbol will be added to keyboard also, maybe remove the fiat symbol altogether  ;D

That's a great news for sure, just on the fact that this will be discussed bring me a real hope about it. This is so exciting, because it will impulse bitcoin a lot, and people who dont know it, will start to ask themselves whats is this symbol ;)

i hope in the future, this symbol will be added to keyboard to, maybe remove the fait symbol altogether  ;D

I hope that too, that will be awesome, i can't wait to see that symbol on my keyboard lol.

Great news indeed and a greater proposal made by Ken Shirriff which thanks to him, we could use in the near future the BTC sign in more places and the way he explained the proposal, I'm speechless honestly, didn't knew it could happen but I was wrong on the matter

This is huge, it won't go away, it will last no matter how bitcoin will handle itself :)
Viva la bitcoin!

You'd still need the $ for programming and other purposes but I agree that keyboard manufacturers should include BTC on their next designs

Finally! Another acknowledgment from the general public! This is actually a big news because people have been pushing this to be implemented and it seems that we finally have our hands on it. :D

...i hope in the future, this symbol will be added to keyboard also, maybe remove the fiat symbol altogether  ;D

You can request keyboard manufacturers for it since it is already a unicode, though I'm not sure whether they'll be interested or not.

Preferably get rid of the "Windows" key also, just needs changing to a symbol meaning "menu" seeing as that's what it does on Windows anyway (as well as most other OS'es)

Awesome news, I guess this was the result of the price increasing.
BTW shouldn't this be considered a spot here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=87.0 ?

This is definately a step in the right direction and a big goal reached for the bitcoin community.

Makes me proud to have been sort of early in this game. :)

Way to go.

This is pretty huge. Anyone knows what key combinations you have to press to make the symbol appear? I wish they would release a keyboard with a more accessible key combination (for example a simple shift + a number one like we use for $), and the key would show the BTC symbol. We need to make it a standard in every keyboard on the planet.

Yep, that would be great! And then maybe tens of millions of people who still don't aware of Bitcoin's existence will become curious of what it is.

The price is rising already, but we need more reasons for its rising and stabilising.

It doesn't go that fast to get accepted in there.

I remember some people discussing a while ago that they had submitted a request to get it added, timing is just perfect though!

That is pretty big news indeed, now we need Bitcoin on keyboards as well.

Did someone call Logitech yet?

A true international keyboard layout should have a Bitcoin shortcut on it.

I can't wait for the day that the BTC symbol replaces the dollar symbol on my keyboard. Everyone will be using bitcoin by then. This is the start of the whirlwind to main street, when it gets integrated into the established systems like unicode.

LOL
How will we code if we have no $ sign on our keyboards?

Does it mean we will be able to use it on Android smartphones too? Because im really slow at digital typing and I hate to put "BTC" all the time. I would love to just press on a symbol so people know im talking about BTC. Saves a lot of time and is way more stylish than using 3 big letters. No one says USD 1000 when you can say $1000 right.

U+20BF is now official. It's just a matter of time before the font maintainers put it in their fonts. I'm guessing very soon.

U+20BF is now official. It's just a matter of time before the font maintainers put it in their fonts. I'm guessing very soon.

Unicode 9.0 will be released in June, so you probably won't see official fonts released before then. If you just want a font to play around with, luke-jr has made a font with the Bitcoin symbol in its official place here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3refb4/btc_symbol_added_to_droid_and_console_fonts/ (https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/3refb4/btc_symbol_added_to_droid_and_console_fonts/)

In any case, thank you to the bitcointalk.org participants who helped me with the proposal - the original thread is here if you're curious: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1170902 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1170902)

There's no BITCOIN SIGN (U+20BF) in Unicode 9.0. :(

It seems that we have to wait another version (minor?).

Bitcoin Sign is finally a part of the Unicode 10.0 standard. :)

Quote from: 'Unicode 10.0'
Bitcoin Sign. U+20BF bitcoin sign represents the bitcoin, a cryptocurrency and payment
system invented by programmers. A cryptocurrency such as the bitcoin works as a medium
of exchange that uses cryptography to secure transactions and to control the creation of
additional units of currency. It is categorized as a decentralized virtual or digital currency.

I had never seen at any place of the symbol news of the Bitcoin anywhere and also don't know about the unicode .
But a recent news is came in my friend circle and also in YouTube news that the symbol of the Bitcoin as an emoji will be
Added to the WhatsApp , so now I am thinking that if it will happen then j am 100% sure that the symbol of Bitcoin will be
Accepted by many other platforms and keyboards also .
Well here we should wait until they launch the system and then we can use them  ;D with excitement
Edit:1
From Google source :
an international encoding standard for use with different languages and scripts, by which each letter, digit, or symbol is assigned a unique numeric value that applies across different platforms and programs.

Now I understand this thing , now hopping that we will find it at every place of social media :)

I think it's great too. Althought this news will not affect anything to Bitcoin price but that's the signal that Bitcoin is notice by everyone all over the world so that it presents a good chance for Bitcoin to grow up in the future, we should be happy for that news :)
