Title: silkroad is down
Post by: el_rlee on November 10, 2012, 02:10:16 PM
for at least 24h now - guess this will sooner or later dry out demand...
buy now, sell for more when (if) it comes back on.

Is this a financial advice? So what's your name and street address? I need to be able to sue you if it doesn't work as expected then  :P

Clear suggestion to market participants to take a particular course of action (e.g. "Buy now before the price goes to 5", "SELL quickly, the weekend is coming")

We can't..... Silkroad has some upgrading to do.. It has gotten rather large.. so many vendors now compared to a year ago.

Silk Road being down is more bullish than anything. The reason it's having trouble is the sheer amount of new users. It's growing too fast.

That is a so called positive problem.

Because DPR himself made an open statement on the forum stating that's exactly what's happening.

... by the way. I would like to see DPR as a member of TBF. Or even SR as Premier Industry Member.

but bitcoin is no bowl of cherries.

The question is, if DPR can do anything about the problem... if it is Tor, because I hardly believe that his website or server is the bottleneck.

DPR stated on Nov 2nd:
Quote
Just want to keep everyone in the loop.  We are in uncharted territory in terms of the number of users accessing Silk Road.  Most of the time we've been able to keep up with the demand, but we ARE behind the curve right now.  Being the largest hidden service ever to exist and having limited options for expanding infrastructure due to the need for security means we may stay behind the curve until we can find a way to accommodate the demand.  There are several paths we are currently pursuing and we hope to be back on track very soon.  Please be patient and try using the site during off-peak times.

since then it got much worse

I don't know if I need to state that I just wanted to start a discussion whether

*this will not influence the price at all
*this will cause a lower price now, and will go up again later
*will drive the price up
*etc

Silk Road being down is more bullish than anything. The reason it's having trouble is the sheer amount of new users. It's growing too fast.

you mean it will be low first, then go up again? is that a financial advice?

They made an official statement saying not to make rumors, and that they'd be shocked if the site wouldnt be back on on monday:

I am so sorry to leave you guys hanging for so long wondering what is going on with the site today. Let me just make everything clear and reassure you all that Silk Road has NOT been compromised, DPR has NOT been busted, and EVERYTHING IS OKAY!
Yes, we are having some technical difficulties. We have been making some serious overhauls and changes to the system, server, and website. While I cannot tell you exactly what is wrong today, I can assure you that we will fix it and have it back up soon. By soon, I mean I would be shocked if we didn't have it back up by Monday.
Please, I beg of you, don't start spreading any unnecessary rumors that will surely stir up chaos, fear, and confusion amongst out community.
To quote DPR himself, "We are in uncharted waters", and it appears that we have grown a little bit faster then we had anticipated. As a consequence, we are being plagued with all kinds of technical difficulties and poorly timed problems.
Our beloved captain Roberts will be online and addressing you guys sometime in the next 48 hours to explain whats been going on and what has and is being done to fix it. Please be patient and rest assured that all will be well soon.
Thank you for your understanding,
-Inigo

Wow... only users that seems to like silkroad. No thought about that site being a potential threat to bitcoins. You all are user from silkroads service? This thread shouldnt be read by journalists, otherwise they could get strange ideas when such a community is acting this way.

Or is silkroad now another thing it was before? At least im a bit astonished.

We just like free markets ;)

Of course... but when this kind of "free market" is seen as a gangsters criminal market i doubt there will come much good out of it for bitcoins. Because "the bitcoins" are the bad at the end because the good policemen cant hunt down the bad people easily.
Anyway... its there and it will be used... but showing such a onesided sympathy at the biggest bitcoin-community... i dont know if thats a good thing for bitcoins at the end.

Silk road = anonymous marketplace. That's it. Nothing less, nothing more.

If you truly believe in Bitcoin you should support Silk road. It's a truly free market with no violence and it protects privacy. It should be supported.

I'd like to add that I've never even seen Silk road nor do I support using drugs. That has nothing to do with it however.

Silkroad has more to do than just buying drugs..... You can buy precursors and make your own :)

But aren't those unusually expensive?

Depends on what you're making...

Safrole oil seems cheap..... Very hard to make MDMA....

pure ephedrine = very expensive. But easily used to make a VERY expensive drug... meth

Drugs Inc is a rather interesting documentary.

It's a documentary...

It's currently on it's third season..

Rather interesting.... It talks about Drugs incorporated.... Each episode focuses on a different drug.
