I'm working in a major city tonight. I took a walk to get some food then headed back to the hotel. On my way back not one but two people asked me for money. The first, a woman, said "gimme a cigarette or some money!" The second, a man, said "got any change?"

I can't imagine what it's like to be homeless. I can think about what it would be like but I have no clue, not even close, what it must feel like to be homeless.

I can imagine what it's like to not have something, standing next to someone who does, someone I may need something from, and how I need to act to win that person over. It start's with respect and understanding for the position I have in the transaction.

To people begging for money every say please? They didn't to me tonight. Have they for you?

Am I just being an ass?

i understand the premise, i would like a please, thank you, etc .but the situation they are in is tough. i think i would not post it in economics . maybe religion or karma post's  if there is one

Yeah, yeah, i think you're right. I always try to be respectful back because I have no idea how difficult there side of the world must be.

I just started panhandling about 2 months ago and I have decided it is my new profession. BTW, I just ran the numbers for last month on an Excel spreadsheet, I worked 50.5 hours and made $1250, which is $24.75/hour. Previous month was $594 in 36 hours, for $16.50/hour.

Anyway, all my sign says is "HELP /n NEED MONEY"

Are you saying I should put a "Please" above the "HELP"? I really don't think it would improve on my tips and I would have to shrink the font size of the "HELP" which would make it more difficult for people in cars further back to read the "HELP".

Rarely have I seen such people use the required courtesy nowadays. There could be a few who do it. Then i think, doesn't it get tedious for them to keep saying 'please' all day long and after being rejected most of the times they might just get frustrated. just thinking out loud..

This is an exception, you can rarely meet people like this somewhere  ;) It is question to speak with them or not - and depend mostly from yourself  ;)

I don't wish to defend people who act like that, but truth is they get use to rejection or to be imperceptible. Life was cruel to them and they lost will to be nice. In any case i blame the system for this things. Every day is a struggle and in every struggle there is wounded, crippled and lost-minded person's. We can see them everywhere around. I hope it will be better, but who knows when.

Yep, we got some people like you in my area. One even had a newspaper article written about him, yes it was negative.

My first response is, people like you make me sick. You are taking advantage of peoples kindness. You are a leech!

But what i really want to say to beggers in general is you don't understand how energy works do you. You beggers are not providing any consideration. Energy (including money) is an exchange. What the fuck are you offering to anyone, nothing right, but you will take. That is your issue, and that is why you are a sleazy begger.

Offer the other person something, anything for their money. Dont just take and take and take, but give something back.

Btw, homeless, and beggers are damn near on every corner around here. And yes i on occasion do give money, and rides. But the entrapreneur beggers , fuck them.

We are live in different country so we have different attitute. On my local place, every homeless has said " please " ofcourse with our natural language and we are very respect for them. But still there are some healthty people to being a poor ( kind of an abusing ) If something like that happen, mostly I will report them to the police.

I tried selling jewelry, made less than $2/hour.

I tried writing articles on hubpages. Wrote 100 articles, made less than $0.01/hour.

The most successful thing I ever did was start a computer store with $3000 seed money. Slept in the back, spent several hours a day advertising on craigslist. Open 9AM-9PM for 84 hours a week working. The first couple months, I barely made enough to pay the rent, by the end of the first year, I was making over a $100/day after expenses (and actually only working a couple hours a day, even if I was there all day). Had over $5k in inventory, ran the other nearby computer repair shops out of business.

The problem was my parole officer discovered it, he was doing everything in his power to keep me from working with curfews, job seek radius, ect. so he had me arrested, then talked to the owner of the building, they cleaned everything out. The judge threw out the violation (I was never forbidden to start my own business), but when I got out everything was gone. They destroyed my life so many times for something that happened over 40 years ago when I was suffering from psychosis. I barely have the motivation to start over. Besides, in this area, I would need about $15k to open a new computer store.

Maybe after another year of panhandling.

Ok, you fall into the category of down on your luck. Other categories include, drug/alcohol addiction, mental illness, or preferred lifestyle.

Look at the brightside, you are here on bitcoin forum. Im sure those bitcoins you've boughten with your begging money will make you quite wealthy in a few years.

To bring it back to my original argument. When people give you money, do you offer to give them anything, anything all in return? Even if they dont or wont take what you are trying to give?


The guy in my town, parkes his bmw a block away, sits on his corner, even just fucking yesterday i saw him, holds his sign, then leaves at end of day. He goes home to a nice house that he owns. Now in this scenerio, is there anything wrong?

People nowadays feel so entitled.

If you would not give them donations, they would be very agressive and feel like you robbed them :D

Thats what happens when you live in a collectivist world.

I try to be aware of "what is my product?". I figure that people want to feel good for helping someone out. So I always try to give a heartfelt thank you. If they give a large bill, my response is along the lines of "thank you, WOW, that is a lot, thank you very much, I am very grateful".

Yesterday, somebody gave me a large box of new pens. I was giving a pen to anyone that gave me money. Also tried selling them for a while. Either way it really hurt tips though and I figure it is a lot like trying to hawk jewelry, people think you must be doing okay and ignore you.

As for owning bitcoins, I never heard of them till summer of 2013. Immediately recognized the genius/beauty behind them. Bought a dozen at $120, and yes, the price has more than doubled in the last 30 months, which is good, but at that rate, it will still take at least a decade before I feel rich enough to spend any of them. Thanks to panhandling, I was able to buy 3 more last month.   ;)

I almost always give something to homeless people and have a conversation with them. They usually thank me and most of them are pretty friendly when you treat them like a human being. (not saying you didn't) 
It's pretty bad in Brussels, I know they're probably using the money to buy alcohol or drugs, but since they're living on the streets I don't blame them.

some of them are not real homeless, that's the problem too much fake activity nowadays, you can't even trust the children that ask you money

i know that there were some beggers  making 3k a month lol, in the past, and they still want more money, this is being greedy not homeless at all

Yep, scammers everywhere.

But you have to differentiate scammers from real needy people. A charity organization should be able to.

Some of them are not really homeless. Our government provide shelter for homeless people. I am not sure why they do not stay there.
